Then Job answered , and said: | Then Job answered and said: | Then Job replied: |
How long do you afflict my soul, and break me in pieces with words? | “How long will you torment me and break me in pieces with words? | “How long will you torment me and crush me with words? |
Behold, these ten times you confound me, and are not ashamed to oppress me. | These ten times you have cast reproach upon me; are you not ashamed to wrong me? | Ten times now you have reproached me; shamelessly you attack me. |
For if I have been ignorant, my ignorance shall be with me. | And even if it be true that I have erred, my error remains with myself. | If it is true that I have gone astray, my error remains my concern alone. |
But you have set yourselves up against me, and reprove me with my reproaches. | If indeed you magnify yourselves against me and make my disgrace an argument against me, | If indeed you would exalt yourselves above me and use my humiliation against me, |
At least now understand, that God hath not afflicted me with an equal judgment, and compassed me with his scourges. | know then that God has put me in the wrong and closed his net about me. | then know that God has wronged me and drawn his net around me. |
Behold I cry suffering violence, and no one will hear: I shall cry aloud, and there is none to judge. | Behold, I cry out, ‘Violence!’ but I am not answered; I call for help, but there is no justice. | “Though I cry, ‘Violence!’ I get no response; though I call for help, there is no justice. |
He hath hedged in my path round about, and I cannot pass, and in my way he hath set darkness. | He has walled up my way, so that I cannot pass, and he has set darkness upon my paths. | He has blocked my way so I cannot pass; he has shrouded my paths in darkness. |
He hath stripped me of my glory, and hath taken the crown from my head. | He has stripped from me my glory and taken the crown from my head. | He has stripped me of my honor and removed the crown from my head. |
He hath destroyed me on every side, and I am lost, and he hath taken away my hope, as from a tree that is plucked up. | He breaks me down on every side, and I am gone, and my hope has he pulled up like a tree. | He tears me down on every side till I am gone; he uproots my hope like a tree. |
His wrath is kindled against me, and he hath counted me as his enemy. | He has kindled his wrath against me and counts me as his adversary. | His anger burns against me; he counts me among his enemies. |
His troops have come together, and have made themselves a way by me, and have besieged my tabernacle round about. | His troops come on together; they have cast up their siege ramp against me and encamp around my tent. | His troops advance in force; they build a siege ramp against me and encamp around my tent. |
He hath put my brethren far from me, and my acquaintance like strangers have departed from me. | “He has put my brothers far from me, and those who knew me are wholly estranged from me. | “He has alienated my family from me; my acquaintances are completely estranged from me. |
My kinsmen have forsaken me, and they that knew me, have forgotten me. | My relatives have failed me, my close friends have forgotten me. | My relatives have gone away; my closest friends have forgotten me. |
They that dwelt in my house, and my maidservants have counted me a stranger, and I have been like an alien in their eyes. | The guests in my house and my maidservants count me as a stranger; I have become a foreigner in their eyes. | My guests and my female servants count me a foreigner; they look on me as on a stranger. |
I called my servant, and he gave me no answer, I entreated him with my own mouth. | I call to my servant, but he gives me no answer; I must plead with him with my mouth for mercy. | I summon my servant, but he does not answer, though I beg him with my own mouth. |
My wife hath abhorred my breath, and I entreated the children of my womb. | My breath is strange to my wife, and I am a stench to the children of my own mother. | My breath is offensive to my wife; I am loathsome to my own family. |
Even fools despise me; and when I gone from them, they spoke against me. | Even young children despise me; when I rise they talk against me. | Even the little boys scorn me; when I appear, they ridicule me. |
They that were sometime my counsellors, have abhorred me: and he whom I love most is turned against me. | All my intimate friends abhor me, and those whom I loved have turned against me. | All my intimate friends detest me; those I love have turned against me. |
The flesh being consumed. My bone hath cleaved to my skin, and nothing but lips are left about my teeth. | My bones stick to my skin and to my flesh, and I have escaped by the skin of my teeth. | I am nothing but skin and bones; I have escaped only by the skin of my teeth. |
Have pity on me, have pity on me, at least you my friends, because the hand of the Lord hath touched me. | Have mercy on me, have mercy on me, O you my friends, for the hand of God has touched me! | “Have pity on me, my friends, have pity, for the hand of God has struck me. |
Why do you persecute me as God, and glut yourselves with my flesh? | Why do you, like God, pursue me? Why are you not satisfied with my flesh? | Why do you pursue me as God does? Will you never get enough of my flesh? |
Who will grant me that my words may be written? Who will grant me that they may be marked down in a book? | “Oh that my words were written! Oh that they were inscribed in a book! | “Oh, that my words were recorded, that they were written on a scroll, |
With an iron pen and in a plate of lead, or else be graven with an instrument in flint stone. | Oh that with an iron pen and lead they were engraved in the rock forever! | that they were inscribed with an iron tool on lead, or engraved in rock forever! |
For I know that my Redeemer liveth, and in the last day I shall rise out of the earth. | For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth. | I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth. |
And I shall be clothed again with my skin, and in my flesh I will see my God. | And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God, | And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; |
Whom I myself shall see, and my eyes shall behold, and not another: this my hope is laid up in my bosom. | whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. My heart faints within me! | I myself will see him with my own eyes—I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me! |
Why then do you say now: Let us persecute him, and let us find occasion of word against him? | If you say, ‘How we will pursue him!’ and, ‘The root of the matter is found in him,’ | “If you say, ‘How we will hound him, since the root of the trouble lies in him,’ |
Flee then from the face of the sword, for the sword is the revenger of iniquities: and know ye that there is judgment. | be afraid of the sword, for wrath brings the punishment of the sword, that you may know there is a judgment.” | you should fear the sword yourselves; for wrath will bring punishment by the sword, and then you will know that there is judgment.” |
