1 And it came to pass in the fourteenth … year of king Hezekiah that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah, and he captured them. In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them. In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah’s reign, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.
2 And the king of Assyria sent the Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem, to king Hezekiah, with a great army; and he stood by the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Field of Fuller. And the king of Assyria sent the Rabshakeh from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem, with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Washer’s Field. Then the king of Assyria sent his field commander with a large army from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. When the commander stopped at the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field,
3 And went out to him Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder. And there came out to him Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder. Eliakim son of Hilkiah the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder went out to him.
4 And the Rabshakeh said to them, “Say, please, to Hezekiah, thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: ‘What is this confidence with which you are confident? And the Rabshakeh said to them, “Say to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: On what do you rest this trust of yours? The field commander said to them, “Tell Hezekiah: “’This is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: On what are you basing this confidence of yours?
5 You speak a mere word of the lips is counsel and strength for the battle? Now, in whom are you trusting, that you have rebelled against me? Do you think that mere words are strategy and power for war? In whom do you now trust, that you have rebelled against me? You say you have counsel and might for war—but you speak only empty words. On whom are you depending, that you rebel against me?
6 Behold, are you trusting in the staff of this broken reed in Egypt, which a man who leans on it, it will go into his palm and pierce it! So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all those trusting in him. Behold, you are trusting in Egypt, that broken reed of a staff, which will pierce the hand of any man who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him. Look, I know you are depending on Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff, which pierces the hand of anyone who leans on it! Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who depend on him.
7 But if you say to me, ‘In YHWH our God we trust,’ is it not He for whom His high places and His altars, Hezekiah has turned aside, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, ‘Before this altar you⁺ shall worship? But if you say to me, “We trust in the LORD our God,” is it not he whose high places and altars Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and to Jerusalem, “You shall worship before this altar”? But if you say to me, “We are depending on the LORD our God|—isn’t he the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, “You must worship before this altar|?
8 And now, make a wager, please, with my lord the king of Assyria, and I will give to you two thousand horses—if you are able to set for you riders on them. Come now, make a wager with my master the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them. “’Come now, make a bargain with my master, the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses—if you can put riders on them!
9 And how can you turn back the faces of one among a governor of the least servants of my lord, and place your trust in Egypt for chariot and horsemen? How then can you repulse a single captain among the least of my master’s servants, when you trust in Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? How then can you repulse one officer of the least of my master’s officials, even though you are depending on Egypt for chariots and horsemen?
10 And now, was it without YHWH that I came up against this land to destroy it? YHWH has said to me, ‘Go up against this land and destroy it!’” Moreover, is it without the LORD that I have come up against this land to destroy it? The LORD said to me, “Go up against this land and destroy it.”’” Furthermore, have I come to attack and destroy this land without the LORD? The LORD himself told me to march against this country and destroy it.’”
11 And Eliakim said and Shebna and Joah to the Rabshakeh, “Speak, please, to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; and do not speak to us in Hebrew in the ears of the people who are on the wall.” Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it. Do not speak to us in the language of Judah within the hearing of the people who are on the wall.” Then Eliakim, Shebna and Joah said to the field commander, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, since we understand it. Don’t speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the wall.”
12 And the Rabshakeh said “Was it to your lord and to you that my master sent me to speak these words? Was it not to the men sitting on the wall who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you⁺?” But the Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me to speak these words to your master and to you, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are doomed with you to eat their own dung and drink their own urine?” But the commander replied, “Was it only to your master and you that my master sent me to say these things, and not to the people sitting on the wall—who, like you, will have to eat their own excrement and drink their own urine?”
13 And the Rabshakeh stood and called out with a great voice in Hebrew, and he said, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria! Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out in a loud voice in the language of Judah: “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria! Then the commander stood and called out in Hebrew, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!
14 Thus says the king: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you⁺, for he will not be able to deliver you⁺. Thus says the king: ‘Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you. This is what the king says: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you. He cannot deliver you!
15 And do not let Hezekiah make you⁺ trust in YHWH, saying, ‘YHWH will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’ Do not let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD by saying, “The LORD will surely deliver us. This city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.” Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the LORD when he says, ‘The LORD will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’
16 Do not listen to Hezekiah! For thus says the king of Assyria: Make peace with me and come out to me, and each man will eat from his own vine and each man from his fig tree, and each man will drink the waters of his own cistern, Do not listen to Hezekiah. For thus says the king of Assyria: Make your peace with me and come out to me. Then each one of you will eat of his own vine, and each one of his own fig tree, and each one of you will drink the water of his own cistern, “Do not listen to Hezekiah. This is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then each of you will eat fruit from your own vine and fig tree and drink water from your own cistern,
17 until I come and take you⁺ to a land like your⁺ own land—a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards. until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards. until I come and take you to a land like your own—a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
18 Lest Hezekiah should incite you⁺ saying, ‘YHWH will surely deliver us.’ Have the gods of the nations delivered every man of his land from the hand of the king of Assyria? Beware lest Hezekiah mislead you by saying, “The LORD will deliver us.” Has any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? “Do not let Hezekiah mislead you when he says, ‘The LORD will deliver us.’ Have the gods of any nations ever delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria?
19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Indeed, have they delivered Samaria from my hand? Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they rescued Samaria from my hand?
20 Who among all the gods of these lands are they who have delivered their lands from my hand, that YHWH might deliver Jerusalem from my hand?” Who among all the gods of these lands have delivered their lands out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’” Who of all the gods of these countries have been able to save their lands from me? How then can the LORD deliver Jerusalem from my hand?”
21 And they were quiet, and they did not answer him a word; for it was the command of the king saying, “Do not answer him.” But they were silent and answered him not a word, for the king’s command was, “Do not answer him.” But the people remained silent and said nothing in reply, because the king had commanded, “Do not answer him.”
22 And came Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with torn clothes, and they declared to him the words of the Rabshakeh. Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of the Rabshakeh. Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary and Joah son of Asaph the recorder went to Hezekiah, with their clothes torn, and told him what the field commander had said.
