1 For behold, the Lord Jehovah of armies taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay, and the stay, all the stay of bread, and all the stay of water. For behold, the Lord GOD of hosts is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah support and supply, all support of bread, and all support of water; See now, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, is about to take from Jerusalem and Judah both supply and support: all supplies of food and all supplies of water,
2 The strong one and the man of war, the judge and the prophet, and the divines, and the old man, the mighty man and the soldier, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder, the hero and the warrior, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder,
3 The captain of fifty and the elevated of face, and the counselor, and the wise of the artificers, and the intelligent one enchanting. the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor and the skillful magician and the expert in charms. the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor, skilled craftsman and clever enchanter.
4 And I gave boys their chiefs, and the petulant shall rule over them. And I will make boys their princes, and infants shall rule over them. “I will make mere youths their officials; children will rule over them.”
5 And the people were pressed, man by man, and a man by his neighbor: the boy shall enlarge himself against the old man and the despised against the honorable. And the people will oppress one another, every one his fellow and every one his neighbor; the youth will be insolent to the elder, and the despised to the honorable. People will oppress each other— man against man, neighbor against neighbor. The young will rise up against the old, the nobody against the honored.
6 For a man shall seize upon his brother of the house of his father, A garment to thee, thou shalt be chief to us, this ruin under thy hand: For a man will take hold of his brother in the house of his father, saying: “You have a cloak; you shall be our leader, and this heap of ruins shall be under your rule”; A man will seize one of his brothers in his father’s house, and say, “You have a cloak, you be our leader; take charge of this heap of ruins!”
7 He shall lift up in that day, saying, I will not be binding up; and in my house no bread and no garment: thou shalt not set me a chief of the people. in that day he will speak out, saying: “I will not be a healer; in my house there is neither bread nor cloak; you shall not make me leader of the people.” But in that day he will cry out, “I have no remedy. I have no food or clothing in my house; do not make me the leader of the people.”
8 For Jerusalem was weak, and Judah fell: for their tongues and their doings are against Jehovah to embitter the eyes of his glory. For Jerusalem has stumbled, and Judah has fallen, because their speech and their deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence. Jerusalem staggers, Judah is falling; their words and deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence.
9 The withdrawing of their face answered against them; and they announced their sins as Sodom, and they covered not. Wo to their soul! for they rewarded evil to themselves. For the look on their faces bears witness against them; they proclaim their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil on themselves. The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! They have brought disaster upon themselves.
10 Say to the just, that it is good that they shall eat the fruit of their doings. Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds. Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds.
11 Wo to the unjust! evil! for the reward of his hands shall be done to him. Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for what his hands have dealt out shall be done to him. Woe to the wicked! Disaster is upon them! They will be paid back for what their hands have done.
12 My people, their tyrants from children, and women ruled over them. My people, they calling thee happy, causing to err; they destroyed the way of thy paths. My people—infants are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, your guides mislead you and they have swallowed up the course of your paths. Youths oppress my people, women rule over them. My people, your guides lead you astray; they turn you from the path.
13 Jehovah stood up to contend and he stood to judge the peoples. The LORD has taken his place to contend; he stands to judge peoples. The LORD takes his place in court; he rises to judge the people.
14 Jehovah will go into judgment with the old men of his people and his chiefs: and ye burnt up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses. The LORD will enter into judgment with the elders and princes of his people: “It is you who have devoured the vineyard, the spoil of the poor is in your houses. The LORD enters into judgment against the elders and leaders of his people: “It is you who have ruined my vineyard; the plunder from the poor is in your houses.
15 Why will ye crush my people and grind the faces of the poor? says the Lord Jehovah of armies. What do you mean by crushing my people, by grinding the face of the poor?” declares the Lord GOD of hosts. What do you mean by crushing my people and grinding the faces of the poor?” declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty.
16 And Jehovah will say, Because the daughters of Zion were lifted up, and they will go extending the neck and ogling their eyes, going and tripping their going, and binding back their feet: The LORD said: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with outstretched necks, glancing wantonly with their eyes, mincing along as they go, tinkling with their feet, The LORD says, “The women of Zion are haughty, walking along with outstretched necks, flirting with their eyes, strutting along with swaying hips, with ornaments jingling on their ankles.
17 And Jehovah made bald the crown of the daughters of Zion, and Jehovah opened the redundance. therefore the Lord will strike with a scab the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will lay bare their secret parts. Therefore the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the women of Zion; the LORD will make their scalps bald.”
18 In that day Jehovah will turn away the ornament of the ankle bands, and the inter-weavings, and the crescents, In that day the Lord will take away the finery of the anklets, the headbands, and the crescents; In that day the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces,
19 The drops, and the chains, and the veils, the pendants, the bracelets, and the scarves; the earrings and bracelets and veils,
20 The head-dresses and the step chains, and the girdles, and the houses of the soul, and the amulets. the headdresses, the armlets, the sashes, the perfume boxes, and the amulets; the headdresses and anklets and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms,
21 The signet rings and the rings of the nose. the signet rings and nose rings; the signet rings and nose rings,
22 The costly garments and the cloaks, and the mantles, and the caskets. the festal robes, the mantles, the cloaks, and the handbags; the fine robes and the capes and cloaks, the purses
23 The mirrors and the shirts and the turbans and the veils. the mirrors, the linen garments, the turbans, and the veils. and mirrors, and the linen garments and tiaras and shawls.
24 And it was instead of a sweet smell there shall be rottenness, and instead of a girdle, a rope, and instead of turned work, baldness, and instead of a variegated garment, a girding of sackcloth a brand instead of beauty. Instead of perfume there will be rottenness; and instead of a belt, a rope; and instead of well-set hair, baldness; and instead of a rich robe, a skirt of sackcloth; and branding instead of beauty. Instead of fragrance there will be a stench; instead of a sash, a rope; instead of well-dressed hair, baldness; instead of fine clothing, sackcloth; instead of beauty, branding.
25 Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy strength in the war. Your men shall fall by the sword and your mighty men in battle. Your men will fall by the sword, your warriors in battle.
26 And her entrances sighed and mourned; and being clean, she shall sit upon the earth. And her gates shall lament and mourn; empty, she shall sit on the ground. The gates of Zion will lament and mourn; destitute, she will sit on the ground.
