1 For behold, the Lord, YHWH of Hosts, || Is turning aside from Jerusalem and from Judah || [Both] stay and staff: Every stay of bread and every stay of water; For behold, the Lord GOD of hosts is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah support and supply, all support of bread, and all support of water; See now, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, is about to take from Jerusalem and Judah both supply and support: all supplies of food and all supplies of water,
2 Mighty and man of war, judge and prophet, || And diviner and elderly, the mighty man and the soldier, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder, the hero and the warrior, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder,
3 Head of fifty, and accepted of faces, || And counselor, and wise craftsmen, || And discerning charmer. the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor and the skillful magician and the expert in charms. the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor, skilled craftsman and clever enchanter.
4 And I have made youths their heads, || And sucklings rule over them. And I will make boys their princes, and infants shall rule over them. “I will make mere youths their officials; children will rule over them.”
5 And the people has exacted—man on man, || Even a man on his neighbor, || The youths enlarge themselves against the aged, || And the lightly esteemed against the honored. And the people will oppress one another, every one his fellow and every one his neighbor; the youth will be insolent to the elder, and the despised to the honorable. People will oppress each other— man against man, neighbor against neighbor. The young will rise up against the old, the nobody against the honored.
6 When one lays hold on his brother, || Of the house of his father, [by] the garment, “Come, you are a ruler to us, || And this ruin [is] under your hand.” For a man will take hold of his brother in the house of his father, saying: “You have a cloak; you shall be our leader, and this heap of ruins shall be under your rule”; A man will seize one of his brothers in his father’s house, and say, “You have a cloak, you be our leader; take charge of this heap of ruins!”
7 He lifts up, in that day, saying, “I am not a binder up, || And in my house is neither bread nor garment, || You do not make me a ruler of the people.” in that day he will speak out, saying: “I will not be a healer; in my house there is neither bread nor cloak; you shall not make me leader of the people.” But in that day he will cry out, “I have no remedy. I have no food or clothing in my house; do not make me the leader of the people.”
8 For Jerusalem has stumbled, and Judah has fallen, || For their tongue and their doings [are] against YHWH, || To provoke the eyes of His glory. For Jerusalem has stumbled, and Judah has fallen, because their speech and their deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence. Jerusalem staggers, Judah is falling; their words and deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence.
9 The appearance of their faces witnessed against them, || And their sin, as Sodom, they declared, || They have not hidden! Woe to their soul, || For they have done evil to themselves. For the look on their faces bears witness against them; they proclaim their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil on themselves. The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! They have brought disaster upon themselves.
10 Say to the righteous that [it is] good, || Because they eat the fruit of their doings. Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds. Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds.
11 Woe to the wicked—evil, || Because the deed of his hand is done to him. Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for what his hands have dealt out shall be done to him. Woe to the wicked! Disaster is upon them! They will be paid back for what their hands have done.
12 My people—its exactors [are] sucklings, || And women have ruled over it. My people—your eulogists are causing to err, || And the way of your paths swallowed up. My people—infants are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, your guides mislead you and they have swallowed up the course of your paths. Youths oppress my people, women rule over them. My people, your guides lead you astray; they turn you from the path.
13 YHWH has stood up to plead, || And He is standing to judge the peoples. The LORD has taken his place to contend; he stands to judge peoples. The LORD takes his place in court; he rises to judge the people.
14 YHWH enters into judgment || With [the] elderly of His people, and its heads: “And you, you have consumed the vineyard, || Plunder of the poor [is] in your houses. The LORD will enter into judgment with the elders and princes of his people: “It is you who have devoured the vineyard, the spoil of the poor is in your houses. The LORD enters into judgment against the elders and leaders of his people: “It is you who have ruined my vineyard; the plunder from the poor is in your houses.
15 Why? Why do you [do this]? You bruise My people, || And you grind the faces of the poor.” A declaration of the Lord, YHWH of Hosts, || And YHWH says: What do you mean by crushing my people, by grinding the face of the poor?” declares the Lord GOD of hosts. What do you mean by crushing my people and grinding the faces of the poor?” declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty.
16 “Because that daughters of Zion have been haughty, || And they walk stretching out the neck, || And deceiving [with] the eyes, || They go walking and mincing, || And they make a jingling with their feet, The LORD said: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with outstretched necks, glancing wantonly with their eyes, mincing along as they go, tinkling with their feet, The LORD says, “The women of Zion are haughty, walking along with outstretched necks, flirting with their eyes, strutting along with swaying hips, with ornaments jingling on their ankles.
17 The Lord has also scabbed || The crown of the head of daughters of Zion, || And YHWH exposes their simplicity. therefore the Lord will strike with a scab the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will lay bare their secret parts. Therefore the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the women of Zion; the LORD will make their scalps bald.”
18 In that day the Lord turns aside || The beauty of the jingling ornaments, || And of the embroidered works, || And of the crescents, In that day the Lord will take away the finery of the anklets, the headbands, and the crescents; In that day the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces,
19 Of the pendants, and the bracelets, and the veils, the pendants, the bracelets, and the scarves; the earrings and bracelets and veils,
20 Of the headdresses, and the ornaments of the legs, || And of the bands, || And of the perfume boxes, and the amulets, the headdresses, the armlets, the sashes, the perfume boxes, and the amulets; the headdresses and anklets and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms,
21 Of the seals, and of the nose-rings, the signet rings and nose rings; the signet rings and nose rings,
22 Of the costly apparel, and of the mantles, || And of the coverings, and of the purses, the festal robes, the mantles, the cloaks, and the handbags; the fine robes and the capes and cloaks, the purses
23 Of the mirrors, and of the linen garments, || And of the hoods, and of the veils, the mirrors, the linen garments, the turbans, and the veils. and mirrors, and the linen garments and tiaras and shawls.
24 And it has been, instead of spice is muck, || And instead of a girdle, a rope, || And instead of curled work, baldness, || And instead of a stomacher a girdle of sackcloth. Instead of perfume there will be rottenness; and instead of a belt, a rope; and instead of well-set hair, baldness; and instead of a rich robe, a skirt of sackcloth; and branding instead of beauty. Instead of fragrance there will be a stench; instead of a sash, a rope; instead of well-dressed hair, baldness; instead of fine clothing, sackcloth; instead of beauty, branding.
25 For instead of glory, your men fall by sword, || And your might in battle. Your men shall fall by the sword and your mighty men in battle. Your men will fall by the sword, your warriors in battle.
26 And her openings have lamented and mourned, || Indeed, she has been emptied, she sits on the earth!” And her gates shall lament and mourn; empty, she shall sit on the ground. The gates of Zion will lament and mourn; destitute, she will sit on the ground.
