1 For behold, the Lord, Yahweh of hosts, is going to remove from Jerusalem and Judah Both supply and support, the whole supply of bread And the whole supply of water, For behold, the Lord GOD of hosts is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah support and supply, all support of bread, and all support of water; See now, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, is about to take from Jerusalem and Judah both supply and support: all supplies of food and all supplies of water,
2 The mighty man and the man of war, The judge and the prophet, The diviner and the elder, the mighty man and the soldier, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder, the hero and the warrior, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder,
3 The commander of fifty and the highly respected man, The counselor and the wise craftsman, And the experienced enchanter. the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor and the skillful magician and the expert in charms. the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor, skilled craftsman and clever enchanter.
4 And I will make young men their princes, And capricious children will rule over them, And I will make boys their princes, and infants shall rule over them. “I will make mere youths their officials; children will rule over them.”
5 And the people will be oppressed, Each one by another, and each one by his neighbor; The youth will overwhelm the elder And the dishonorable against the honorable. And the people will oppress one another, every one his fellow and every one his neighbor; the youth will be insolent to the elder, and the despised to the honorable. People will oppress each other— man against man, neighbor against neighbor. The young will rise up against the old, the nobody against the honored.
6 When a man grasps his brother in his father’s house, saying, “You have a cloak, you shall be our ruler, And these ruins will be under your hand,” For a man will take hold of his brother in the house of his father, saying: “You have a cloak; you shall be our leader, and this heap of ruins shall be under your rule”; A man will seize one of his brothers in his father’s house, and say, “You have a cloak, you be our leader; take charge of this heap of ruins!”
7 He will protest on that day, saying, “I will not be your healer, For in my house there is neither bread nor cloak; You should not appoint me ruler of the people.” in that day he will speak out, saying: “I will not be a healer; in my house there is neither bread nor cloak; you shall not make me leader of the people.” But in that day he will cry out, “I have no remedy. I have no food or clothing in my house; do not make me the leader of the people.”
8 For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen, Because their tongue and their deeds are against Yahweh, To rebel against His glorious presence. For Jerusalem has stumbled, and Judah has fallen, because their speech and their deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence. Jerusalem staggers, Judah is falling; their words and deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence.
9 The expression of their faces answers against them, And they declare their sin like Sodom; They do not even conceal it. Woe to their soul! For they have dealt out evil on themselves. For the look on their faces bears witness against them; they proclaim their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil on themselves. The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! They have brought disaster upon themselves.
10 Say to the righteous that it will go well with them, For they will eat the fruit of their deeds. Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds. Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds.
11 Woe to the wicked! It will go badly with him, For what he has dealt out will be done to him. Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for what his hands have dealt out shall be done to him. Woe to the wicked! Disaster is upon them! They will be paid back for what their hands have done.
12 O My people! Their taskmasters are infants, And women rule over them. O My people! Those who guide you lead you astray And swallow up the way of your paths. My people—infants are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, your guides mislead you and they have swallowed up the course of your paths. Youths oppress my people, women rule over them. My people, your guides lead you astray; they turn you from the path.
13 Yahweh takes His stand to contend, And stands to judge the peoples. The LORD has taken his place to contend; he stands to judge peoples. The LORD takes his place in court; he rises to judge the people.
14 Yahweh enters into judgment with the elders of His people and His princes, “It is you who have consumed the vineyard; The plunder robbed of the afflicted is in your houses. The LORD will enter into judgment with the elders and princes of his people: “It is you who have devoured the vineyard, the spoil of the poor is in your houses. The LORD enters into judgment against the elders and leaders of his people: “It is you who have ruined my vineyard; the plunder from the poor is in your houses.
15 What do you mean by crushing My people And grinding the face of the afflicted?” Declares Lord Yahweh of hosts. What do you mean by crushing my people, by grinding the face of the poor?” declares the Lord GOD of hosts. What do you mean by crushing my people and grinding the faces of the poor?” declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty.
16 Moreover, Yahweh said, “Because the daughters of Zion are haughty And walk with outstretched necks and seductive eyes, And go along with mincing steps And tinkle the bangles on their feet, The LORD said: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with outstretched necks, glancing wantonly with their eyes, mincing along as they go, tinkling with their feet, The LORD says, “The women of Zion are haughty, walking along with outstretched necks, flirting with their eyes, strutting along with swaying hips, with ornaments jingling on their ankles.
17 Therefore the Lord will smite the skull of the daughters of Zion with scabs, And Yahweh will make their foreheads bare.” therefore the Lord will strike with a scab the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will lay bare their secret parts. Therefore the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the women of Zion; the LORD will make their scalps bald.”
18 In that day the Lord will remove the beauty of their anklets, headbands, crescent ornaments, In that day the Lord will take away the finery of the anklets, the headbands, and the crescents; In that day the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces,
19 dangling earrings, bracelets, veils, the pendants, the bracelets, and the scarves; the earrings and bracelets and veils,
20 headdresses, ankle chains, sashes, perfume boxes, enchanted charms, the headdresses, the armlets, the sashes, the perfume boxes, and the amulets; the headdresses and anklets and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms,
21 finger rings, nose rings, the signet rings and nose rings; the signet rings and nose rings,
22 festal robes, outer tunics, cloaks, money purses, the festal robes, the mantles, the cloaks, and the handbags; the fine robes and the capes and cloaks, the purses
23 hand mirrors, undergarments, turbans, and shawls. the mirrors, the linen garments, the turbans, and the veils. and mirrors, and the linen garments and tiaras and shawls.
24 Now it will be that instead of sweet perfume there will be the smell of rot; Instead of a belt, a rope; Instead of well-set hair, a plucked-out scalp; Instead of fine clothes, a donning of sackcloth; And branding instead of beauty. Instead of perfume there will be rottenness; and instead of a belt, a rope; and instead of well-set hair, baldness; and instead of a rich robe, a skirt of sackcloth; and branding instead of beauty. Instead of fragrance there will be a stench; instead of a sash, a rope; instead of well-dressed hair, baldness; instead of fine clothing, sackcloth; instead of beauty, branding.
25 Your men will fall by the sword And your mighty ones in battle. Your men shall fall by the sword and your mighty men in battle. Your men will fall by the sword, your warriors in battle.
26 And her gates will lament and mourn, And deserted she will sit on the ground. And her gates shall lament and mourn; empty, she shall sit on the ground. The gates of Zion will lament and mourn; destitute, she will sit on the ground.
