1 For behold, the Lord YHWH of hosts is turning away from Jerusalem and from Judah the staff and support—the whole staff of bread, and the whole staff of water— For behold, the Lord GOD of hosts is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah support and supply, all support of bread, and all support of water; See now, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, is about to take from Jerusalem and Judah both supply and support: all supplies of food and all supplies of water,
2 the mighty one and the man of war, the judge and the prophet, and the diviner and the elder, the mighty man and the soldier, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder, the hero and the warrior, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder,
3 the captain of fifty, and the lifted up of faces, and the counselor, and the cunning magician, and the discerning charmer. the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor and the skillful magician and the expert in charms. the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor, skilled craftsman and clever enchanter.
4 “And I will give youths as their princes, and infants will rule over them.” And I will make boys their princes, and infants shall rule over them. “I will make mere youths their officials; children will rule over them.”
5 And the people will be oppressed, each man by a man and each man by his neighbor; the child will rage against the elder, and the one despised against the honored. And the people will oppress one another, every one his fellow and every one his neighbor; the youth will be insolent to the elder, and the despised to the honorable. People will oppress each other— man against man, neighbor against neighbor. The young will rise up against the old, the nobody against the honored.
6 For a man will take hold on his brother in the house of his father: “A cloak is unto you—the chief you will be for us, and this heap of ruins is under your hand;” For a man will take hold of his brother in the house of his father, saying: “You have a cloak; you shall be our leader, and this heap of ruins shall be under your rule”; A man will seize one of his brothers in his father’s house, and say, “You have a cloak, you be our leader; take charge of this heap of ruins!”
7 he will lift up in that day to say, “I will not be one binding wounds, and in my house there is no bread and no garment; you⁺ shall not set me as chief of the people.” in that day he will speak out, saying: “I will not be a healer; in my house there is neither bread nor cloak; you shall not make me leader of the people.” But in that day he will cry out, “I have no remedy. I have no food or clothing in my house; do not make me the leader of the people.”
8 For Jerusalem has stumbled, and Judah has fallen, because their tongue and their deeds are against YHWH, defying the eyes of His glory. For Jerusalem has stumbled, and Judah has fallen, because their speech and their deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence. Jerusalem staggers, Judah is falling; their words and deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence.
9 The look of their faces answers against them, and their sin like Sodom they declare—they do not hide it! Woe to their soul, for they have brought evil upon themselves. For the look on their faces bears witness against them; they proclaim their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil on themselves. The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! They have brought disaster upon themselves.
10 Say to the righteous that it is good, for the fruit of their deeds they will eat. Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds. Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds.
11 Woe to the wicked—evil; for the recompense of his hands will be done to him! Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for what his hands have dealt out shall be done to him. Woe to the wicked! Disaster is upon them! They will be paid back for what their hands have done.
12 My people—their oppressors are foolish children, and women rule over them. O My people, those who guide you lead you astray, and the way of your paths they have swallowed up. My people—infants are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, your guides mislead you and they have swallowed up the course of your paths. Youths oppress my people, women rule over them. My people, your guides lead you astray; they turn you from the path.
13 YHWH Is taking His stand to contend, and is standing to judge the peoples. The LORD has taken his place to contend; he stands to judge peoples. The LORD takes his place in court; he rises to judge the people.
14 YHWH will enter into judgment with the elders of His people and His princes: “And you⁺—you⁺ have consumed the vineyard; the plunder of the poor is in your⁺ houses. The LORD will enter into judgment with the elders and princes of his people: “It is you who have devoured the vineyard, the spoil of the poor is in your houses. The LORD enters into judgment against the elders and leaders of his people: “It is you who have ruined my vineyard; the plunder from the poor is in your houses.
15 Why do you crush My people, and grind the faces of the poor?” A declaration of the Lord YHWH of hosts. What do you mean by crushing my people, by grinding the face of the poor?” declares the Lord GOD of hosts. What do you mean by crushing my people and grinding the faces of the poor?” declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty.
16 And says YHWH: “Because that the daughters of Zion are haughty, and they walk with outstretched neck and wanton eyes, walking and skipping as they go, and with their feet jingling, The LORD said: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with outstretched necks, glancing wantonly with their eyes, mincing along as they go, tinkling with their feet, The LORD says, “The women of Zion are haughty, walking along with outstretched necks, flirting with their eyes, strutting along with swaying hips, with ornaments jingling on their ankles.
17 and the Lord will bring scabs to the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and YHWH will make their foreheads bare. therefore the Lord will strike with a scab the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will lay bare their secret parts. Therefore the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the women of Zion; the LORD will make their scalps bald.”
18 That in the day the Lord will turn away the beauty of the anklets and the headbands, and the crescents, In that day the Lord will take away the finery of the anklets, the headbands, and the crescents; In that day the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces,
19 the pendants, and the bracelets, and the veils, the pendants, the bracelets, and the scarves; the earrings and bracelets and veils,
20 the headdresses, and the armlets, and the sashes, and the boxes of perfume, and the charms, the headdresses, the armlets, the sashes, the perfume boxes, and the amulets; the headdresses and anklets and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms,
21 the signet rings, and nose rings, the signet rings and nose rings; the signet rings and nose rings,
22 the festive robes, and the tunics, and the cloaks, and the purses, the festal robes, the mantles, the cloaks, and the handbags; the fine robes and the capes and cloaks, the purses
23 and the mirrors, and the linen garments, and the turbans, and the veils. the mirrors, the linen garments, the turbans, and the veils. and mirrors, and the linen garments and tiaras and shawls.
24 And it will come to pass, instead of of spice, that there will be rottenness; and instead of a belt, a rope; and instead of worked hair, baldness; and instead of a fine robe, a girding of sackcloth; and shame instead of beauty. Instead of perfume there will be rottenness; and instead of a belt, a rope; and instead of well-set hair, baldness; and instead of a rich robe, a skirt of sackcloth; and branding instead of beauty. Instead of fragrance there will be a stench; instead of a sash, a rope; instead of well-dressed hair, baldness; instead of fine clothing, sackcloth; instead of beauty, branding.
25 Your men will fall by the sword, and your mighty ones in battle; Your men shall fall by the sword and your mighty men in battle. Your men will fall by the sword, your warriors in battle.
26 and her gates will lament and mourn and she will be left empty—on the ground she will sit. And her gates shall lament and mourn; empty, she shall sit on the ground. The gates of Zion will lament and mourn; destitute, she will sit on the ground.
