1 Behold, Jehovah emptying the earth and making it waste, and subverting its face, and scattering its inhabitants. Behold, the LORD will empty the earth and make it desolate, and he will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants. See, the LORD is going to lay waste the earth and devastate it; he will ruin its face and scatter its inhabitants—
2 And it was as the people, so the priest; as the servant, so his lord; as the maid, so the mistress; as the buyer, so he selling; as he lending, so the borrower; as be lending on interest, so he exacting interest to him. And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the slave, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the creditor, so with the debtor. it will be the same for priest as for people, for the master as for his servant, for the mistress as for her servant, for seller as for buyer, for borrower as for lender, for debtor as for creditor.
3 Being emptied, the land shall be emptied: and being plundered, it shall be plundered: for Jehovah spake this word. The earth shall be utterly empty and utterly plundered; for the LORD has spoken this word. The earth will be completely laid waste and totally plundered. The LORD has spoken this word.
4 The earth mourning, fell away: the habitable globe languishing, fell away: the heights of the people of the land languished, The earth mourns and withers; the world languishes and withers; the highest people of the earth languish. The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers, the heavens languish with the earth.
5 And the earth was polluted under its inhabitants, for they passed by the instructions, they changed the law, they broke the eternal covenant. The earth lies defiled under its inhabitants; for they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant. 6 For this, the curse consumed the earth, and they dwelling in it, will transgress: for this, they dwelling upon the earth were burned, and those remaining, men of fewness. Therefore a curse devours the earth, and its inhabitants suffer for their guilt; therefore the inhabitants of the earth are scorched, and few men are left. Therefore a curse consumes the earth; its people must bear their guilt. Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up, and very few are left.
7 The new wine mourned, the vine languished, all they joyful of heart, sighed. The wine mourns, the vine languishes, all the merry-hearted sigh. The new wine dries up and the vine withers; all the merrymakers groan.
8 The exulting of the drums ceased, the noise of those triumphing, left off, the exulting of the harp ceased. The mirth of the tambourines is stilled, the noise of the jubilant has ceased, the mirth of the lyre is stilled. The joyful timbrels are stilled, the noise of the revelers has stopped, the joyful harp is silent.
9 They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to those drinking it. No more do they drink wine with singing; strong drink is bitter to those who drink it. No longer do they drink wine with a song; the beer is bitter to its drinkers.
10 The city of desolation was broken down: every house was shut up from coining in. The wasted city is broken down; every house is shut up so that none can enter. The ruined city lies desolate; the entrance to every house is barred.
11 An outcry for wine in the streets; all joy grew dark, the exulting of the earth was carried into exile. There is an outcry in the streets for lack of wine; all joy has grown dark; the gladness of the earth is banished. In the streets they cry out for wine; all joy turns to gloom, all joyful sounds are banished from the earth.
12 Desolation was left in the city, and the gate shall be struck in ruins. Desolation is left in the city; the gates are battered into ruins. The city is left in ruins, its gate is battered to pieces.
13 For thus it shall be in the midst of the land in the midst of the peoples, as the beating of the olive, as the gleanings if the vintage was finished. For thus it shall be in the midst of the earth among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, as at the gleaning when the grape harvest is done. So will it be on the earth and among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, or as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest.
14 They shall lift up their voice, they shall shout for joy in the majesty of Jehovah they cried aloud from the sea. They lift up their voices, they sing for joy; over the majesty of the LORD they shout from the west. They raise their voices, they shout for joy; from the west they acclaim the LORD’s majesty.
15 For this, with lights they honored Jehovah in the isles of the sea, the name of Jehovah the God of Israel. Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD; in the coastlands of the sea, give glory to the name of the LORD, the God of Israel. Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD; exalt the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, in the islands of the sea.
16 From the wing of the earth we heard songs, glory to the just one. And saying, Destruction to me, destruction to me, wo to me! they acting deceitfully, acted deceitfully; and spoiling, they acting deceitfully, acted deceitfully. From the ends of the earth we hear songs of praise, of glory to the Righteous One. But I say, “I waste away, I waste away. Woe is me! For the traitors have betrayed, with betrayal the traitors have betrayed.” From the ends of the earth we hear singing: “Glory to the Righteous One.” But I said, “I waste away, I waste away! Woe to me! The treacherous betray! With treachery the treacherous betray!”
17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, upon thee, thou inhabiters of the earth. Terror and the pit and the snare are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth! Terror and pit and snare await you, people of the earth.
18 And it was he fleeing from the voice of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he coming up out of the midst of the pit, shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from the height were opened, and the foundations of the earth, will tremble. He who flees at the sound of the terror shall fall into the pit, and he who climbs out of the pit shall be caught in the snare. For the windows of heaven are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble. Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit; whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare. The floodgates of the heavens are opened, the foundations of the earth shake.
19 And being broken, the earth was broken to pieces, and the earth being abolished, it was abolished; the earth being shaken, shook. The earth is utterly broken, the earth is split apart, the earth is violently shaken. The earth is broken up, the earth is split asunder, the earth is violently shaken.
20 The earth moving to and fro, shall move to and fro as the intoxicated, and it was removed as a lodge; and its transgression was heavy upon it and it fell, and it shall not add to rise. The earth staggers like a drunken man; it sways like a hut; its transgression lies heavy upon it, and it falls, and will not rise again. The earth reels like a drunkard, it sways like a hut in the wind; so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion that it falls—never to rise again.
21 And it was in that day Jehovah shall review upon the army of the height upon the height, and upon the kings of the earth upon the earth. On that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven, in heaven, and the kings of the earth, on the earth. In that day the LORD will punish the powers in the heavens above and the kings on the earth below.
22 And they gathered a collection of the bound into the dungeon, and they were shut up into a shutting up, and after many days they shall be reviewed. They will be gathered together as prisoners in a pit; they will be shut up in a prison, and after many days they will be punished. They will be herded together like prisoners bound in a dungeon; they will be shut up in prison and be punished after many days.
23 And the moon blushed, and the sun was ashamed, for Jehovah of armies reigned in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and was honored before his old men. Then the moon will be confounded and the sun ashamed, for the LORD of hosts reigns on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and his glory will be before his elders. The moon will be dismayed, the sun ashamed; for the LORD Almighty will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before its elders—with great glory.
