1 Look, the LORD is ready to devastate the earth and leave it in ruins; he will mar its surface and scatter its inhabitants. Behold, the LORD will empty the earth and make it desolate, and he will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants. See, the LORD is going to lay waste the earth and devastate it; he will ruin its face and scatter its inhabitants—
2 Everyone will suffer--the priest as well as the people, the master as well as the servant, the elegant lady as well as the female attendant, the seller as well as the buyer, the borrower as well as the lender, the creditor as well as the debtor. And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the slave, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the creditor, so with the debtor. it will be the same for priest as for people, for the master as for his servant, for the mistress as for her servant, for seller as for buyer, for borrower as for lender, for debtor as for creditor.
3 The earth will be completely devastated and thoroughly ransacked. For the LORD has decreed this judgment. The earth shall be utterly empty and utterly plundered; for the LORD has spoken this word. The earth will be completely laid waste and totally plundered. The LORD has spoken this word.
4 The earth dries up and withers, the world shrivels up and withers; the prominent people of the earth fade away. The earth mourns and withers; the world languishes and withers; the highest people of the earth languish. 5 The earth is defiled by its inhabitants, for they have violated laws, disregarded the regulation, and broken the permanent treaty. 7 The new wine dries up, the vines shrivel up, all those who like to celebrate groan. The wine mourns, the vine languishes, all the merry-hearted sigh. The new wine dries up and the vine withers; all the merrymakers groan.
8 The happy sound of the tambourines stops, the revelry of those who celebrate comes to a halt, the happy sound of the harp ceases. The mirth of the tambourines is stilled, the noise of the jubilant has ceased, the mirth of the lyre is stilled. The joyful timbrels are stilled, the noise of the revelers has stopped, the joyful harp is silent.
9 They no longer sing and drink wine; the beer tastes bitter to those who drink it. No more do they drink wine with singing; strong drink is bitter to those who drink it. No longer do they drink wine with a song; the beer is bitter to its drinkers.
10 The ruined town is shattered; all of the houses are shut up tight. The wasted city is broken down; every house is shut up so that none can enter. The ruined city lies desolate; the entrance to every house is barred.
11 They howl in the streets because of what happened to the wine; all joy turns to sorrow; celebrations disappear from the earth. There is an outcry in the streets for lack of wine; all joy has grown dark; the gladness of the earth is banished. In the streets they cry out for wine; all joy turns to gloom, all joyful sounds are banished from the earth.
12 The city is left in ruins; the gate is reduced to rubble. Desolation is left in the city; the gates are battered into ruins. The city is left in ruins, its gate is battered to pieces.
13 This is what will happen throughout the earth, among the nations. It will be like when they beat an olive tree, and just a few olives are left at the end of the harvest. For thus it shall be in the midst of the earth among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, as at the gleaning when the grape harvest is done. So will it be on the earth and among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, or as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest.
14 They lift their voices and shout joyfully; they praise the majesty of the LORD in the west. They lift up their voices, they sing for joy; over the majesty of the LORD they shout from the west. They raise their voices, they shout for joy; from the west they acclaim the LORD’s majesty.
15 So in the east extol the LORD, along the seacoasts extol the fame of the LORD God of Israel. Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD; in the coastlands of the sea, give glory to the name of the LORD, the God of Israel. Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD; exalt the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, in the islands of the sea.
16 From the ends of the earth we hear songs--the Just One is majestic. But I say, |I'm wasting away! I'm wasting away! I'm doomed! Deceivers deceive, deceivers thoroughly deceive!| From the ends of the earth we hear songs of praise, of glory to the Righteous One. But I say, “I waste away, I waste away. Woe is me! For the traitors have betrayed, with betrayal the traitors have betrayed.” From the ends of the earth we hear singing: “Glory to the Righteous One.” But I said, “I waste away, I waste away! Woe to me! The treacherous betray! With treachery the treacherous betray!”
17 Terror, pit, and snare are ready to overtake you inhabitants of the earth! Terror and the pit and the snare are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth! Terror and pit and snare await you, people of the earth.
18 The one who runs away from the sound of the terror will fall into the pit; the one who climbs out of the pit, will be trapped by the snare. For the floodgates of the heavens are opened up and the foundations of the earth shake. He who flees at the sound of the terror shall fall into the pit, and he who climbs out of the pit shall be caught in the snare. For the windows of heaven are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble. Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit; whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare. The floodgates of the heavens are opened, the foundations of the earth shake.
19 The earth is broken in pieces, the earth is ripped to shreds, the earth shakes violently. The earth is utterly broken, the earth is split apart, the earth is violently shaken. The earth is broken up, the earth is split asunder, the earth is violently shaken.
20 The earth will stagger around like a drunk; it will sway back and forth like a hut in a windstorm. Its sin will weigh it down, and it will fall and never get up again. The earth staggers like a drunken man; it sways like a hut; its transgression lies heavy upon it, and it falls, and will not rise again. The earth reels like a drunkard, it sways like a hut in the wind; so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion that it falls—never to rise again.
21 At that time the LORD will punish the heavenly forces in the heavens and the earthly kings on the earth. On that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven, in heaven, and the kings of the earth, on the earth. In that day the LORD will punish the powers in the heavens above and the kings on the earth below.
22 They will be imprisoned in a pit, locked up in a prison, and after staying there for a long time, they will be punished. They will be gathered together as prisoners in a pit; they will be shut up in a prison, and after many days they will be punished. They will be herded together like prisoners bound in a dungeon; they will be shut up in prison and be punished after many days.
23 The full moon will be covered up, the bright sun will be darkened; for the LORD who commands armies will rule on Mount Zion in Jerusalem in the presence of his assembly, in majestic splendor. Then the moon will be confounded and the sun ashamed, for the LORD of hosts reigns on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and his glory will be before his elders. The moon will be dismayed, the sun ashamed; for the LORD Almighty will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before its elders—with great glory.
