1 BEHOLD, the LORD shall destroy the earth and lay it waste and turn it upside down and scatter its inhabitants. Behold, the LORD will empty the earth and make it desolate, and he will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants. See, the LORD is going to lay waste the earth and devastate it; he will ruin its face and scatter its inhabitants—
2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the creditor, so with the debtor. And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the slave, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the creditor, so with the debtor. it will be the same for priest as for people, for the master as for his servant, for the mistress as for her servant, for seller as for buyer, for borrower as for lender, for debtor as for creditor.
3 The land shall be utterly destroyed and utterly spoiled; for the LORD has spoken this word. The earth shall be utterly empty and utterly plundered; for the LORD has spoken this word. The earth will be completely laid waste and totally plundered. The LORD has spoken this word.
4 The earth howls and sits in mourning, the world wails and sits in mourning, the haughty people of the earth lament. The earth mourns and withers; the world languishes and withers; the highest people of the earth languish. The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers, the heavens languish with the earth.
5 The earth also is defiled like its inhabitants, because they have transgressed the law, changed the ordinance, and nullified the everlasting covenant. The earth lies defiled under its inhabitants; for they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant. 6 Therefore the earth shall sit in mourning, and all its inhabitants shall be condemned; therefore all the inhabitants of the earth shall be destroyed, and a few men shall be left. Therefore a curse devours the earth, and its inhabitants suffer for their guilt; therefore the inhabitants of the earth are scorched, and few men are left. Therefore a curse consumes the earth; its people must bear their guilt. Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up, and very few are left.
7 The grain mourns, the vine languishes, all the merry-hearted sigh. The wine mourns, the vine languishes, all the merry-hearted sigh. The new wine dries up and the vine withers; all the merrymakers groan.
8 The mirth of the timbrels has ceased, the noise of those that rejoice has ended, the joy of the harp is over. The mirth of the tambourines is stilled, the noise of the jubilant has ceased, the mirth of the lyre is stilled. The joyful timbrels are stilled, the noise of the revelers has stopped, the joyful harp is silent.
9 They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to those who drink it. No more do they drink wine with singing; strong drink is bitter to those who drink it. No longer do they drink wine with a song; the beer is bitter to its drinkers.
10 The city is plundered, every wine cellar is shut up, so that no one may come in. The wasted city is broken down; every house is shut up so that none can enter. The ruined city lies desolate; the entrance to every house is barred.
11 There is a crying for wine in the streets; all joy has ended, the mirth of the land is gone. There is an outcry in the streets for lack of wine; all joy has grown dark; the gladness of the earth is banished. In the streets they cry out for wine; all joy turns to gloom, all joyful sounds are banished from the earth.
12 The city is left in desolation, and its gates are broken with destruction. Desolation is left in the city; the gates are battered into ruins. The city is left in ruins, its gate is battered to pieces.
13 For thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the peoples, it shall be as the shaking of an olive tree and as the gleaning of grapes when the vintage is done. For thus it shall be in the midst of the earth among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, as at the gleaning when the grape harvest is done. So will it be on the earth and among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, or as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest.
14 They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the LORD, they shall cry aloud from the sea. They lift up their voices, they sing for joy; over the majesty of the LORD they shout from the west. They raise their voices, they shout for joy; from the west they acclaim the LORD’s majesty.
15 Therefore glorify the LORD with a song, even the name of the LORD God of Israel in the islands of the sea. Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD; in the coastlands of the sea, give glory to the name of the LORD, the God of Israel. Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD; exalt the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, in the islands of the sea.
16 From the uttermost parts of the earth we have heard songs, even the glory of the righteous, saying, It is a mystery to me. it is a mystery to me, woe to me, the wicked have dealt treacherously, yea, the wicked have dealt very treacherously. From the ends of the earth we hear songs of praise, of glory to the Righteous One. But I say, “I waste away, I waste away. Woe is me! For the traitors have betrayed, with betrayal the traitors have betrayed.” From the ends of the earth we hear singing: “Glory to the Righteous One.” But I said, “I waste away, I waste away! Woe to me! The treacherous betray! With treachery the treacherous betray!”
17 Fear and the pit and the snare are upon you, O inhabitants of the earth. Terror and the pit and the snare are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth! Terror and pit and snare await you, people of the earth.
18 And it shall come to pass that he who flees from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he who comes up out of the midst of the pit shall be caught in the snare; for the fountains from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake. He who flees at the sound of the terror shall fall into the pit, and he who climbs out of the pit shall be caught in the snare. For the windows of heaven are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble. Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit; whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare. The floodgates of the heavens are opened, the foundations of the earth shake.
19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is utterly moved, the earth is staggering exceedingly. The earth is utterly broken, the earth is split apart, the earth is violently shaken. The earth is broken up, the earth is split asunder, the earth is violently shaken.
20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard and shall be shaken like a booth, and its transgression shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall and not rise again. The earth staggers like a drunken man; it sways like a hut; its transgression lies heavy upon it, and it falls, and will not rise again. The earth reels like a drunkard, it sways like a hut in the wind; so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion that it falls—never to rise again.
21 And it shall come to pass in that day that the LORD shall punish the host of the lofty ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth. On that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven, in heaven, and the kings of the earth, on the earth. In that day the LORD will punish the powers in the heavens above and the kings on the earth below.
22 And they shall be gathered together as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days they shall be saved. They will be gathered together as prisoners in a pit; they will be shut up in a prison, and after many days they will be punished. They will be herded together like prisoners bound in a dungeon; they will be shut up in prison and be punished after many days.
23 Then the moon shall be confounded and the sun ashamed, for the LORD of hosts shall reign on mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and will be glorified in the presence of his saints. Then the moon will be confounded and the sun ashamed, for the LORD of hosts reigns on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and his glory will be before his elders. The moon will be dismayed, the sun ashamed; for the LORD Almighty will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before its elders—with great glory.
