BEHOLD the Lord shall lay waste the earth, and shall strip it, and shall afflict the face thereof, and scatter abroad the inhabitants thereof. Behold, the LORD will empty the earth and make it desolate, and he will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants. See, the LORD is going to lay waste the earth and devastate it; he will ruin its face and scatter its inhabitants—
And it shall be as with the people, so with the priest: and as with the servant, so with his master: as with the handmaid, so with her mistress: as with the buyer, so with the seller: as with the lender, so with the borrower: as with him that calleth for his money, so with him that oweth. And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the slave, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the creditor, so with the debtor. it will be the same for priest as for people, for the master as for his servant, for the mistress as for her servant, for seller as for buyer, for borrower as for lender, for debtor as for creditor.
With desolation shall the earth be laid waste, and it shall be utterly spoiled: for the Lord hath spoken this word. The earth shall be utterly empty and utterly plundered; for the LORD has spoken this word. The earth will be completely laid waste and totally plundered. The LORD has spoken this word.
The earth mourned, and faded away, and is weakened: the world faded away, the height of the people of the earth is weakened. The earth mourns and withers; the world languishes and withers; the highest people of the earth languish. The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers, the heavens languish with the earth.
And the earth is infected by the in- habitants thereof: because they have transgressed the laws, they have changed the ordinance, they have broken the everlasting covenant. The earth lies defiled under its inhabitants; for they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant. The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant.
Therefore shall a curse devour the earth, and the inhabitants thereof shall sin: and therefore they that dwell therein shall be mad, and few men shall be left. Therefore a curse devours the earth, and its inhabitants suffer for their guilt; therefore the inhabitants of the earth are scorched, and few men are left. Therefore a curse consumes the earth; its people must bear their guilt. Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up, and very few are left.
The vintage hath mourned, the vine hath languished away, all the merryhearted have sighed. The wine mourns, the vine languishes, all the merry-hearted sigh. The new wine dries up and the vine withers; all the merrymakers groan.
The mirth of timbrels hath ceased, the noise of them that rejoice is ended, the melody of the harp is silent. The mirth of the tambourines is stilled, the noise of the jubilant has ceased, the mirth of the lyre is stilled. The joyful timbrels are stilled, the noise of the revelers has stopped, the joyful harp is silent.
They shall not drink wine with a song: the drink shall be bitter to them that drink it. No more do they drink wine with singing; strong drink is bitter to those who drink it. No longer do they drink wine with a song; the beer is bitter to its drinkers.
The city of vanity is broken down, every house is shut up, no man cometh in. The wasted city is broken down; every house is shut up so that none can enter. The ruined city lies desolate; the entrance to every house is barred.
There shall be a crying for wine in the streets: all mirth is forsaken: the joy of the earth is gone away. There is an outcry in the streets for lack of wine; all joy has grown dark; the gladness of the earth is banished. In the streets they cry out for wine; all joy turns to gloom, all joyful sounds are banished from the earth.
Desolation is left in the city, and calamity shall oppress the gates. Desolation is left in the city; the gates are battered into ruins. The city is left in ruins, its gate is battered to pieces.
For it shall be thus in the midst of the earth, in the midst of the people, as if a few olives, that remain, should be shaken out of the olive tree: or grapes, when the vintage is ended. For thus it shall be in the midst of the earth among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, as at the gleaning when the grape harvest is done. So will it be on the earth and among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, or as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest.
These shall lift up their voice, and shall give praise: when the Lord shall be glorified, they shall make a joyful noise from the sea. They lift up their voices, they sing for joy; over the majesty of the LORD they shout from the west. They raise their voices, they shout for joy; from the west they acclaim the LORD’s majesty.
Therefore glorify ye the Lord in instruction: the name of the Lord God of Israel in the islands of the sea. Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD; in the coastlands of the sea, give glory to the name of the LORD, the God of Israel. Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD; exalt the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, in the islands of the sea.
From the ends of the earth we have heard praises, the glory of the just one. And I said: My secret to myself, my secret to myself, woe is me: the prevaricators have prevaricated, and with the prevarication of transgressors they have prevaricated. From the ends of the earth we hear songs of praise, of glory to the Righteous One. But I say, “I waste away, I waste away. Woe is me! For the traitors have betrayed, with betrayal the traitors have betrayed.” From the ends of the earth we hear singing: “Glory to the Righteous One.” But I said, “I waste away, I waste away! Woe to me! The treacherous betray! With treachery the treacherous betray!”
Fear, and the pit, and the snare are upon thee, O thou inhabitant of the earth. Terror and the pit and the snare are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth! Terror and pit and snare await you, people of the earth.
And it shall come to pass, that he that shall flee from the noise of the fear, shall fall into the pit: and he that shall rid himself out of the pit, shall be taken in the snare: for the flood-gates from on high are opened, and the foundations of the earth shall be shaken. He who flees at the sound of the terror shall fall into the pit, and he who climbs out of the pit shall be caught in the snare. For the windows of heaven are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble. Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit; whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare. The floodgates of the heavens are opened, the foundations of the earth shake.
With breaking shall the earth be broken, with crushing shall the earth be crushed, with trembling shall the earth be moved. The earth is utterly broken, the earth is split apart, the earth is violently shaken. The earth is broken up, the earth is split asunder, the earth is violently shaken.
With shaking shall the earth be shaken as a drunken man, and shall be removed as the tent of one night: and the iniquity thereof shall be heavy upon it, and it shall fell, and not rise again. The earth staggers like a drunken man; it sways like a hut; its transgression lies heavy upon it, and it falls, and will not rise again. The earth reels like a drunkard, it sways like a hut in the wind; so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion that it falls—never to rise again.
And it shall come to pass, that in that day the Lord shall visit upon the host of heaven on high, and upon the kings of the earth, on the earth. On that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven, in heaven, and the kings of the earth, on the earth. In that day the LORD will punish the powers in the heavens above and the kings on the earth below.
And they shall be gathered together as in the gathering of one bundle into the pit, and they shall be shut up there in prison: and after many days they shall be visited. They will be gathered together as prisoners in a pit; they will be shut up in a prison, and after many days they will be punished. They will be herded together like prisoners bound in a dungeon; they will be shut up in prison and be punished after many days.
fend the moon shall blush, and the sun shall be ashamed, when the Lord of hosts shall reign in mount Sion, and in Jerusalem, and shall be glorified in the sight of his ancients. Then the moon will be confounded and the sun ashamed, for the LORD of hosts reigns on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and his glory will be before his elders. The moon will be dismayed, the sun ashamed; for the LORD Almighty will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before its elders—with great glory.
