1	And it came to pass, while Apollos was in Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper districts, came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples;	And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus. 2	and he said to them, "Did ye receive the Holy Spirit, after having believed?" And they said to him, "Nay, we did not even hear whether there is a Holy Spirit."	And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”	and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
3	And he said, "Into what, then, were ye immersed?" And they said, "Into John's immersion."	And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.”	So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?” “John’s baptism,” they replied.
4	And Paul said, "John immersed with an immersion of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him coming after him; that is, on Jesus."	And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.”	Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”
5	And, having heard this , they were immersed into the name of the Lord Jesus;	On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.	On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6	and, Paul having laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they were speaking with tongues, and prophesying. But when some became stubborn and continued in unbelief, speaking evil of the Way before the congregation, he withdrew from them and took the disciples with him, reasoning daily in the hall of Tyrannus.	But some of them became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way. So Paul left them. He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.
10	And this continued for two years; so that all those dwelling in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks. Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.”	Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.”
14	Now there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish high priest, who did this.	Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this.	Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this.
15	And the evil spirit, answering, said to them, "Jesus I know, and Paul I understand; but who are ye?"	But the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?”	One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?”
16	And the man in whom was the evil spirit, leaping upon them, and, overcoming them both, prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.	And the man in whom was the evil spirit leaped on them, mastered all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.	Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.
17	And this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who were dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified.	And this became known to all the residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. And fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled.	When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor.
18	Many also of those who had believed were coming, confessing, and declaring their practices.	Also many of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices.	Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done.
19	A considerable number, moreover, of those who had practiced the curious arts, having brought together the books, were burning them in the presence of all; and they counted the prices of them, and found them fifty thousand pieces of silver.	And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver.	A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas.
20	So mightily grew the word of God, and prevailed.	So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily.	In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.
21	Now, when these things were ended, Paul purposed in his spirit, after passing through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem; saying, "After I have been there, I must see Rome also."	Now after these events Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.”	After all this had happened, Paul decided to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia. “After I have been there,” he said, “I must visit Rome also.”
22	And, having sent into Macedonia two of those ministering to him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself remained for a time in Asia.	And having sent into Macedonia two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while. 24	For a certain one, Demetrius by name, a silver-smith, making silver shrines of Diana, was bringing to the artisans no small business;	For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen.	A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought in a lot of business for the craftsmen there.
25	gathering whom together, and the workmen of like occupation, be said, "Men, ye know that out of this business we have our wealth.	These he gathered together, with the workmen in similar trades, and said, “Men, you know that from this business we have our wealth.	He called them together, along with the workers in related trades, and said: “You know, my friends, that we receive a good income from this business.
26	And ye perceive and hear that, not only at Ephesus, but almost in all Asia, this Paul, having persuaded, turned away a great multitude, saying, that they are not gods that are made with hands.	And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus but in almost all of Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people, saying that gods made with hands are not gods.	And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all.
27	And not only is there danger to us that this branch of our business will come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana be reckoned of no account, and also her magnificence will be destroyed, whom all Asia and the inhabited earth worship."	And there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing, and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence, she whom all Asia and the world worship.”	There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited; and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty.”
28	And, hearing this, and becoming full of wrath, they were crying aloud, saying, "Great is Diana of the Ephesians!"	When they heard this they were enraged and were crying out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”	When they heard this, they were furious and began shouting: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
29	And the city was filled with the confusion; and they rushed with one accord into the theater, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus—Macedonians—fellow-travelers of Paul.	So the city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul’s companions in travel.	Soon the whole city was in an uproar. The people seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul’s traveling companions from Macedonia, and all of them rushed into the theater together.
30	And, Paul purposing to enter in unto the people, the disciples were not permitting him.	But when Paul wished to go in among the crowd, the disciples would not let him.	Paul wanted to appear before the crowd, but the disciples would not let him.
31	And some also of the chief men of Asia, being his friends, sending to him, were beseeching him not to venture himself into the theater.	And even some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent to him and were urging him not to venture into the theater.	Even some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, sent him a message begging him not to venture into the theater.
32	Some, therefore, were crying one thing, and some another; for the assembly had become confused, and the greater part knew not for what cause they had come together.	Now some cried out one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together.	The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there.
33	And they brought Alexander out of the crowd, the Jews thrusting him forward. And Alexander, waving his hand, wished to make defense to the people.	Some of the crowd prompted Alexander, whom the Jews had put forward. And Alexander, motioning with his hand, wanted to make a defense to the crowd.	The Jews in the crowd pushed Alexander to the front, and they shouted instructions to him. He motioned for silence in order to make a defense before the people.
34	But, when they perceived that he was a Jew, one voice arose from all, crying aloud for about two hours, "Great is Diana of the Ephesians!"	But when they recognized that he was a Jew, for about two hours they all cried out with one voice, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”	But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
35	But the town-clerk, having quieted the multitude, says, "Men of Ephesus, who, indeed, of men is there that does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of the great Diana, and of the image that fell down from Jupiter?	And when the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, “Men of Ephesus, who is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great Artemis, and of the sacred stone that fell from the sky?	The city clerk quieted the crowd and said: “Fellow Ephesians, doesn’t all the world know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven?
36	These things, therefore, being incontrovertible, it is needful that ye be quiet, and do nothing rash.	Seeing then that these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash.	Therefore, since these facts are undeniable, you ought to calm down and not do anything rash.
37	For ye brought hither these men, who are neither temple-robbers nor blasphemers of our goddess.	For you have brought these men here who are neither sacrilegious nor blasphemers of our goddess.	You have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed temples nor blasphemed our goddess.
38	If, indeed, therefore, Demetrius and the artisans with him have a matter against any one, court-days are held, and there are proconsuls; let them accuse one another.	If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another.	If, then, Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a grievance against anybody, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. They can press charges.
39	But, if ye seek anything about other matters, it shall be determined in the lawful assembly.	But if you seek anything further, it shall be settled in the regular assembly.	If there is anything further you want to bring up, it must be settled in a legal assembly.
40	For, indeed, we are in danger of being accused of riot respecting this day, there existing no cause for it , and regarding which we will be unable to give an account of this concourse."	For we really are in danger of being charged with rioting today, since there is no cause that we can give to justify this commotion.”	As it is, we are in danger of being charged with rioting because of what happened today. In that case we would not be able to account for this commotion, since there is no reason for it.”
41	And, having thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.	And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.	After he had said this, he dismissed the assembly.
