4	Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people that they should believe in the One who would come after him, that is, in Jesus.”	And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.”	Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”

10	And this went on for two years, so that all the inhabitants of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, heard the message about the Lord. 19	while many of those who had practiced magic collected their books and burned them in front of everyone. So they calculated their value and found it to be 50,000 pieces of silver. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver.	A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas.
20	In this way the Lord’s message flourished and prevailed.	So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily.	In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.
21	When these events were over, Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem. “After I’ve been there,” he said, “I must see Rome as well!”	Now after these events Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.”	After all this had happened, Paul decided to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia. “After I have been there,” he said, “I must visit Rome also.”

26	You both see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this man Paul has persuaded and misled a considerable number of people by saying that gods made by hand are not gods!	And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus but in almost all of Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people, saying that gods made with hands are not gods.	And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all.
27	So not only do we run a risk that our business may be discredited, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be despised and her magnificence come to the verge of ruin—the very one all of Asia and the world adore.”	And there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing, and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence, she whom all Asia and the world worship.”	There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited; and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty.”
28	When they had heard this, they were filled with rage and began to cry out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”	When they heard this they were enraged and were crying out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”	When they heard this, they were furious and began shouting: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
29	So the city was filled with confusion, and they rushed all together into the amphitheater, dragging along Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul’s traveling companions. 32	Meanwhile, some were shouting one thing and some another, because the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together. And when the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, “Men of Ephesus, who is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great Artemis, and of the sacred stone that fell from the sky?	The city clerk quieted the crowd and said: “Fellow Ephesians, doesn’t all the world know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven?
36	Therefore, since these things are undeniable, you must keep calm and not do anything rash.	Seeing then that these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash.	Therefore, since these facts are undeniable, you ought to calm down and not do anything rash.
37	For you have brought these men here who are not temple robbers or blasphemers of our goddess.	For you have brought these men here who are neither sacrilegious nor blasphemers of our goddess.	You have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed temples nor blasphemed our goddess.
38	So if Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a case against anyone, the courts are in session, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another.	If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another.	If, then, Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a grievance against anybody, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. They can press charges.
39	But if you want something else, it must be decided in a legal assembly.	But if you seek anything further, it shall be settled in the regular assembly.	If there is anything further you want to bring up, it must be settled in a legal assembly.
40	In fact, we run a risk of being charged with rioting for what happened today, since there is no justification that we can give as a reason for this disorderly gathering.”	For we really are in danger of being charged with rioting today, since there is no cause that we can give to justify this commotion.”	As it is, we are in danger of being charged with rioting because of what happened today. In that case we would not be able to account for this commotion, since there is no reason for it.”
41	After saying this, he dismissed the assembly.	And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.	After he had said this, he dismissed the assembly.
