And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior regions and came to Ephesus. He found some disciples And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, Now it happened that while Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus, and found some disciples.
And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?|” No,” they told him, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.|” He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him, “On the contrary, we have not even heard if there is a Holy Spirit.”
And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.” Then what baptism were you baptized with?” he asked them.” With John’s baptism,” they replied. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “Into John’s baptism.”
And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people that they should believe in the One who would come after him, that is, in Jesus.” Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”
On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying. And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began to speak in other languages and to prophesy. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. And when Paul had laid hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.
There were about twelve men in all. Now there were about 12 men in all. And all the men were about twelve. There were about twelve men in all.
And he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God. Then he entered the synagogue and spoke boldly over a period of three months, engaging in discussion and trying to persuade them about the things of the kingdom of God. And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God. And he entered the synagogue and continued speaking out boldly for three months, having discussions and persuading them about the kingdom of God.
But when some became stubborn and continued in unbelief, speaking evil of the Way before the congregation, he withdrew from them and took the disciples with him, reasoning daily in the hall of Tyrannus. But when some became hardened and would not believe, slandering the Way in front of the crowd, he withdrew from them and met separately with the disciples, conducting discussions every day in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus. But when some were becoming hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the people, he withdrew from them and took the disciples away with him, and had discussions daily in the school of Tyrannus.
This continued for two years, so that all the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks. And this went on for two years, so that all the inhabitants of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, heard the message about the Lord. And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks. This took place for two years, so that all who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.
And God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, God was performing extraordinary miracles by Paul’s hands, And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: God was performing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul,
so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them. so that even facecloths or work aprons that had touched his skin were brought to the sick, and the diseases left them, and the evil spirits came out of them. So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them. so that handkerchiefs or aprons were even carried from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out.
Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.” Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists attempted to pronounce the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I command you by the Jesus that Paul preaches!” Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. But also some of the Jewish exorcists, who went from place to place, attempted to use the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had the evil spirits, saying, “I order you in the name of Jesus whom Paul preaches!”
Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this. Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. Now there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, doing this.
But the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?” The evil spirit answered them, “I know Jesus, and I recognize Paul—but who are you?” And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? But the evil spirit responded and said to them, “I recognize Jesus, and I know of Paul, but who are you?”
And the man in whom was the evil spirit leaped on them, mastered all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. Then the man who had the evil spirit leaped on them, overpowered them all, and prevailed against them, so that they ran out of that house naked and wounded. And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. And the man in whom was the evil spirit, pounced on them and subdued all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
And this became known to all the residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. And fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled. This became known to everyone who lived in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. Then fear fell on all of them, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. This became known to all who lived in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks; and fear fell upon them all and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified.
Also many of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices. And many who had become believers came confessing and disclosing their practices, And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds. Also many of those who had believed kept coming, confessing and disclosing their practices.
And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver. while many of those who had practiced magic collected their books and burned them in front of everyone. So they calculated their value and found it to be 50,000 pieces of silver. Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. And many of those who practiced magic brought their books together and began burning them in the sight of everyone; and they added up the prices of the books and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver.
So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily. In this way the Lord’s message flourished and prevailed. So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed. So the word of the Lord was growing and prevailing mightily.
Now after these events Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.” When these events were over, Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem. “After I’ve been there,” he said, “I must see Rome as well!” After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome. Now after these things were finished, Paul resolved in the Spirit to go to Jerusalem after he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.”
And having sent into Macedonia two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while. So after sending two of those who assisted him, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, he himself stayed in Asia for a while. So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season. And after he sent into Macedonia two of those who assisted him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.
About that time there arose no little disturbance concerning the Way. During that time there was a major disturbance about the Way. And the same time there arose no small stir about that way. About that time a major disturbance occurred in regard to the Way.
For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen. For a person named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, provided a great deal of business for the craftsmen. For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen; For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, was bringing considerable business to the craftsmen;
These he gathered together, with the workmen in similar trades, and said, “Men, you know that from this business we have our wealth. When he had assembled them, as well as the workers engaged in this type of business, he said: “Men, you know that our prosperity is derived from this business. Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth. he gathered these men together with the workmen of similar trades, and said, “Men, you know that our prosperity depends upon this business.
And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus but in almost all of Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people, saying that gods made with hands are not gods. You both see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this man Paul has persuaded and misled a considerable number of people by saying that gods made by hand are not gods! Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands: You see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that gods made by hands are not gods at all.
And there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing, and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence, she whom all Asia and the world worship.” So not only do we run a risk that our business may be discredited, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be despised and her magnificence come to the verge of ruin—the very one all of Asia and the world adore.” So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth. Not only is there danger that this trade of ours will fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be regarded as worthless, and that she whom all of Asia and the world worship will even be dethroned from her magnificence.”
When they heard this they were enraged and were crying out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” When they had heard this, they were filled with rage and began to cry out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. When they heard this and were filled with rage, they began shouting, saying, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
So the city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul’s companions in travel. So the city was filled with confusion, and they rushed all together into the amphitheater, dragging along Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul’s traveling companions. And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre. The city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging along Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul’s Macedonian traveling companions.
But when Paul wished to go in among the crowd, the disciples would not let him. Though Paul wanted to go in before the people, the disciples did not let him. And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not. And when Paul wanted to go into the assembly, the disciples would not let him.
And even some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent to him and were urging him not to venture into the theater. Even some of the provincial officials of Asia, who were his friends, sent word to him, pleading with him not to take a chance by going into the amphitheater. And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre. Also some of the Asiarchs who were friends of his sent word to him and repeatedly urged him not to venture into the theater.
Now some cried out one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together. Meanwhile, some were shouting one thing and some another, because the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together. Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together. So then, some were shouting one thing and some another, for the assembly was in confusion and the majority did not know for what reason they had come together.
Some of the crowd prompted Alexander, whom the Jews had put forward. And Alexander, motioning with his hand, wanted to make a defense to the crowd. Then some of the crowd gave Alexander advice when the Jews pushed him to the front. So motioning with his hand, Alexander wanted to make his defense to the people. And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people. Some of the crowd concluded it was Alexander, since the Jews had put him forward; and having motioned with his hand, Alexander was intending to make a defense to the assembly.
But when they recognized that he was a Jew, for about two hours they all cried out with one voice, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” But when they recognized that he was a Jew, a united cry went up from all of them for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. But when they recognized that he was a Jew, a single outcry arose from them all as they shouted for about two hours, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
And when the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, “Men of Ephesus, who is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great Artemis, and of the sacred stone that fell from the sky? However, when the city clerk had calmed the crowd down, he said, “Men of Ephesus! What man is there who doesn’t know that the city of the Ephesians is the temple guardian of the great Artemis, and of the image that fell from heaven? And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter? After quieting the crowd, the town clerk said, “Men of Ephesus, what person is there after all who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of the image which fell down from the sky?
Seeing then that these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash. Therefore, since these things are undeniable, you must keep calm and not do anything rash. Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly. So, since these are undeniable facts, you ought to keep calm and to do nothing rash.
For you have brought these men here who are neither sacrilegious nor blasphemers of our goddess. For you have brought these men here who are not temple robbers or blasphemers of our goddess. For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess. For you have brought these men here who are neither temple robbers nor blasphemers of our goddess.
If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another. So if Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a case against anyone, the courts are in session, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another. Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another. So then, if Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are in session and proconsuls are available; have them bring charges against one another.
But if you seek anything further, it shall be settled in the regular assembly. But if you want something else, it must be decided in a legal assembly. But if ye inquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly. But if you want anything beyond this, it shall be settled in the lawful assembly.
For we really are in danger of being charged with rioting today, since there is no cause that we can give to justify this commotion.” In fact, we run a risk of being charged with rioting for what happened today, since there is no justification that we can give as a reason for this disorderly gathering.” For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse. For indeed, we are in danger of being accused of a riot in connection with today’s events, since there is no real reason for it, and in this connection we will be unable to account for this disorderly gathering.”
And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly. After saying this, he dismissed the assembly. And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly. After saying this he dismissed the assembly.
