2	also said to them, “Did you⁺ receive the Holy Spirit, having believed?” And they said to him, “But we did not even hear that there is a Holy Spirit.”	And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”	and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
3	And he said, “Into what, then, were you⁺ baptized?” And they said, “Into John's baptism.”	And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.”	So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?” “John’s baptism,” they replied.
4	And Paul said, “John baptized a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the One coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”	And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.”	Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”
5	And having heard, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.	On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.	On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6	And Paul having laid the hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they were speaking in tongues and prophesying. But some of them became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way. So Paul left them. He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.
10	And this continued for two years, so that all those inhabiting Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks. 13	And some of the itinerant Jews, exorcists, also attempted to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those having evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you⁺ by Jesus, whom Paul proclaims.”	Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.”	Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.”
14	Now seven sons of a certain Sceva, a Jewish high priest, were doing this.	Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this.	Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this.
15	But the evil spirit, answering, said to them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about; but you⁺, who are you⁺?”	But the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?”	One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?”
16	And the man in whom was the evil spirit, having leapt on them, having overpowered them all, prevailed against them so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.
17	Now this became known to all those inhabiting Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. And fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified.	And this became known to all the residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. And fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled.	When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor.
18	And many of those having believed were coming, confessing and declaring their deeds,	Also many of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices.	Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done.
19	and many of those having practiced works of magic, having brought the books, burned them before all. And they counted up the prices of them and found it five myriads of silver.	And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver.	A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas.
20	Thus the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail with might.	So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily.	In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.
21	Now after these things were fulfilled, Paul purposed in the Spirit to go to Jerusalem, having passed through Macedonia and Achaia, having said, “After my having been there, it is necessary for me to see Rome also.”	Now after these events Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.”	After all this had happened, Paul decided to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia. “After I have been there,” he said, “I must visit Rome also.”
22	And having sent two of those ministering to him, Timothy and Erastus, into Macedonia, he remained for a time in Asia.	And having sent into Macedonia two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while. 24	For a certain silversmith named Demetrius, making silver shrines of Artemis, was bringing no little business to the craftsmen. 25	Having brought them together along with the workmen in such things, he said, “Men, you⁺ know that out of this business is our wealth.	These he gathered together, with the workmen in similar trades, and said, “Men, you know that from this business we have our wealth.	He called them together, along with the workers in related trades, and said: “You know, my friends, that we receive a good income from this business.
26	And you⁺ see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this Paul, having persuaded them, has turned away a great many people, saying that they are not gods being made by hands.	And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus but in almost all of Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people, saying that gods made with hands are not gods.	And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all.
27	Now not only is this business of ours endangered to come into disrepute, but also for the temple of the great goddess Artemis to be reckoned for nothing, and also her majesty to be deposed, whom all Asia and the world worship.”	And there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing, and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence, she whom all Asia and the world worship.”	There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited; and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty.”
28	And having heard and having become full of rage, they were crying out, saying, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”	When they heard this they were enraged and were crying out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”	When they heard this, they were furious and began shouting: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
29	And the city was filled with confusion, and with one accord they rushed to the theatre, having dragged off Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, fellow travelers of Paul.	So the city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul’s companions in travel.	Soon the whole city was in an uproar. The people seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul’s traveling companions from Macedonia, and all of them rushed into the theater together.
30	But on Paul intending to go in to the people, the disciples were not allowing him.	But when Paul wished to go in among the crowd, the disciples would not let him.	Paul wanted to appear before the crowd, but the disciples would not let him.
31	And also some of the Asiarchs being friends to him, having sent to him, were urging him not to venture into the theatre.	And even some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent to him and were urging him not to venture into the theater.	Even some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, sent him a message begging him not to venture into the theater.
32	Some indeed therefore were crying out one thing, some another. For the assembly was confused, and most did not know for what cause they were assembled.	Now some cried out one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together.	The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there.
33	And out of the crowd they put forward Alexander, the Jews having thrust him forward. And Alexander, having motioned with the hand, was wanting to make a defense to the people.	Some of the crowd prompted Alexander, whom the Jews had put forward. And Alexander, motioning with his hand, wanted to make a defense to the crowd.	The Jews in the crowd pushed Alexander to the front, and they shouted instructions to him. He motioned for silence in order to make a defense before the people.
34	But having recognized that he is a Jew, there was one cry from all, ongoing about two hours, crying out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”	But when they recognized that he was a Jew, for about two hours they all cried out with one voice, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”	But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
35	And having calmed the crowd, the town clerk says, “Men, Ephesians, what man is there indeed who does not know the city of the Ephesians as being temple-keeper of the great Artemis and of that fallen from the sky?	And when the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, “Men of Ephesus, who is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great Artemis, and of the sacred stone that fell from the sky?	The city clerk quieted the crowd and said: “Fellow Ephesians, doesn’t all the world know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven?
36	Therefore, these things being undeniable, it is necessary for you⁺ to be calm and to do nothing rash.	Seeing then that these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash.	Therefore, since these facts are undeniable, you ought to calm down and not do anything rash.
37	For you⁺ brought these men, neither temple plunderers nor blaspheming our goddess.	For you have brought these men here who are neither sacrilegious nor blasphemers of our goddess.	You have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed temples nor blasphemed our goddess.
38	Therefore if indeed Demetrius and the craftsmen with him have a matter against anyone, courts are conducted, and there are proconsuls; let them accuse one another.	If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another.	If, then, Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a grievance against anybody, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. They can press charges.
39	But if you⁺ inquire anything beyond this, it will be solved in the lawful assembly.	But if you seek anything further, it shall be settled in the regular assembly.	If there is anything further you want to bring up, it must be settled in a legal assembly.
40	And indeed, we are in danger of being accused of insurrection concerning this day, there existing not one cause concerning which we will be able to give a reason concerning this commotion.”	For we really are in danger of being charged with rioting today, since there is no cause that we can give to justify this commotion.”	As it is, we are in danger of being charged with rioting because of what happened today. In that case we would not be able to account for this commotion, since there is no reason for it.”
41	And having said these things, he dismissed the assembly.	And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.	After he had said this, he dismissed the assembly.
