1 Ahaz was a son of twenty years in his reigning, and sixteen years he reigned in Jerusalem. And he did not do right in the eyes of YHWH, as David his father. Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. And he did not do what was right in the eyes of the LORD, as his father David had done, Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen years. Unlike David his father, he did not do what was right in the eyes of the LORD.
2 For he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and he made images for the Baals. but he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel. He even made metal images for the Baals, He followed the ways of the kings of Israel and also made idols for worshiping the Baals.
3 And he burned incense in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, and he burned his sons in the fire according to the abominations of the nations whom YHWH had cast out before the sons of Israel. and he made offerings in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom and burned his sons as an offering, according to the abominations of the nations whom the LORD drove out before the people of Israel. He burned sacrifices in the Valley of Ben Hinnom and sacrificed his children in the fire, engaging in the detestable practices of the nations the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.
4 And he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree. And he sacrificed and made offerings on the high places and on the hills and under every green tree. He offered sacrifices and burned incense at the high places, on the hilltops and under every spreading tree.
5 And YHWH his God gave him into the hand of the king of Aram, and they defeated him and carried away a great number of them as captives, and they brought them in to Damascus. And also into the hand of the king of Israel he was delivered, and he struck him with a great slaughter. Therefore the LORD his God gave him into the hand of the king of Syria, who defeated him and took captive a great number of his people and brought them to Damascus. He was also given into the hand of the king of Israel, who struck him with great force. Therefore the LORD his God delivered him into the hands of the king of Aram. The Arameans defeated him and took many of his people as prisoners and brought them to Damascus. He was also given into the hands of the king of Israel, who inflicted heavy casualties on him.
6 And Pekah son of Remaliah killed in Judah a hundred and twenty thousand in one day—all sons of valor—because they had forsaken YHWH, God of their fathers. For Pekah the son of Remaliah killed 120,000 from Judah in one day, all of them men of valor, because they had forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers. In one day Pekah son of Remaliah killed a hundred and twenty thousand soldiers in Judah—because Judah had forsaken the LORD, the God of their ancestors.
7 And Zichri, a mighty man of Ephraim, killed Maaseiah the son of the king, and Azrikam the officer over the house, and Elkanah the second to the king. And Zichri, a mighty man of Ephraim, killed Maaseiah the king’s son and Azrikam the commander of the palace and Elkanah the next in authority to the king. Zikri, an Ephraimite warrior, killed Maaseiah the king’s son, Azrikam the officer in charge of the palace, and Elkanah, second to the king.
8 And the sons of Israel removed from their brothers two hundred thousand women, sons, and daughters. And also they took away from them much plunder, and they brought in the spoil to Samaria. The men of Israel took captive 200,000 of their relatives, women, sons, and daughters. They also took much spoil from them and brought the spoil to Samaria. The men of Israel took captive from their fellow Israelites who were from Judah two hundred thousand wives, sons and daughters. They also took a great deal of plunder, which they carried back to Samaria.
9 And there was a prophet of YHWH (Oded his name), and he went out before the army that came in to Samaria, and he said to them, “Behold, in the fury of YHWH, God of your⁺ fathers, against Judah, He has delivered them into your⁺ hands. And you⁺ have killed them in a rage—it reaches up to the heavens. But a prophet of the LORD was there, whose name was Oded, and he went out to meet the army that came to Samaria and said to them, “Behold, because the LORD, the God of your fathers, was angry with Judah, he gave them into your hand, but you have killed them in a rage that has reached up to heaven. But a prophet of the LORD named Oded was there, and he went out to meet the army when it returned to Samaria. He said to them, “Because the LORD, the God of your ancestors, was angry with Judah, he gave them into your hand. But you have slaughtered them in a rage that reaches to heaven.
10 And now the sons of Judah and Jerusalem you⁺ propose to subdue for menservants and for maidservants unto you⁺. Is there not also unto you⁺ yourselves guilt before YHWH your⁺ God? And now you intend to subjugate the people of Judah and Jerusalem, male and female, as your slaves. Have you not sins of your own against the LORD your God? And now you intend to make the men and women of Judah and Jerusalem your slaves. But aren’t you also guilty of sins against the LORD your God?
11 And now, hear me and return the captives whom you⁺ have taken captive from your⁺ brothers, for the heat of the anger of YHWH is upon you⁺.” Now hear me, and send back the captives from your relatives whom you have taken, for the fierce wrath of the LORD is upon you.” Now listen to me! Send back your fellow Israelites you have taken as prisoners, for the LORD’s fierce anger rests on you.”
12 And some of the heads of the sons of Ephraim—Azariah son of Jehohanan, Berechiah son of Meshillemoth, and Hezekiah son of Shallum, and Amasa son of Hadlai—stood up against those coming in from the host, Certain chiefs also of the men of Ephraim, Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai, stood up against those who were coming from the war Then some of the leaders in Ephraim—Azariah son of Jehohanan, Berekiah son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah son of Shallum, and Amasa son of Hadlai—confronted those who were arriving from the war.
13 and they said to them, “You⁺ shall not bring the captives here, for guilt against YHWH is upon us; you⁺ are saying to add to our sins and to our guilt. For great is the guilt unto us, and the burning of anger is upon Israel.” and said to them, “You shall not bring the captives in here, for you propose to bring upon us guilt against the LORD in addition to our present sins and guilt. For our guilt is already great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.” “You must not bring those prisoners here,” they said, “or we will be guilty before the LORD. Do you intend to add to our sin and guilt? For our guilt is already great, and his fierce anger rests on Israel.”
14 The armed ones left the captives and the spoil before the leaders and all the assembly. So the armed men left the captives and the spoil before the princes and all the assembly. So the soldiers gave up the prisoners and plunder in the presence of the officials and all the assembly.
15 And the men who were marked by name rose up and took charge of the captives, and all their naked ones they clothed from the plunder, and they clothed them, and gave them sandals, and gave them food and drink, and anointed them, and they let ride on donkeys all the feeble ones. And they brought them in to Jericho, the City of Palms, near their brothers. And they returned to Samaria. And the men who have been mentioned by name rose and took the captives, and with the spoil they clothed all who were naked among them. They clothed them, gave them sandals, provided them with food and drink, and anointed them, and carrying all the feeble among them on donkeys, they brought them to their kinsfolk at Jericho, the city of palm trees. Then they returned to Samaria. The men designated by name took the prisoners, and from the plunder they clothed all who were naked. They provided them with clothes and sandals, food and drink, and healing balm. All those who were weak they put on donkeys. So they took them back to their fellow Israelites at Jericho, the City of Palms, and returned to Samaria.

They captured and occupied Beth Shemesh, Aijalon and Gederoth, as well as Soko, Timnah and Gimzo, with their surrounding villages.
19 For YHWH humbled Judah because of Ahaz king of Israel, for he had thrown off restraint in Judah and acted unfaithfully—an unfaithfulness—against YHWH. For the LORD humbled Judah because of Ahaz king of Israel, for he had made Judah act sinfully and had been very unfaithful to the LORD. The LORD had humbled Judah because of Ahaz king of Israel, for he had promoted wickedness in Judah and had been most unfaithful to the LORD.
20 And Tiglath-pilneser king of Assyria came to him, and distressed him, and he did not strengthen him. So Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria came against him and afflicted him instead of strengthening him. Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria came to him, but he gave him trouble instead of help.
21 For Ahaz had taken a portion from the house of YHWH, and from the house of the king, and from the leaders, and he gave it to the king of Assyria and did not help him. For Ahaz took a portion from the house of the LORD and the house of the king and of the princes, and gave tribute to the king of Assyria, but it did not help him. Ahaz took some of the things from the temple of the LORD and from the royal palace and from the officials and presented them to the king of Assyria, but that did not help him.
22 And in the time of distress to him he added to act faithlessly against YHWH (this was King Ahaz). In the time of his distress he became yet more faithless to the LORD—this same King Ahaz. In his time of trouble King Ahaz became even more unfaithful to the LORD.
23 And he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus, those striking him, and he said, “Because the gods of the kings of Aram are helping them, I will sacrifice to them, that they may help me.” And they were the cause of stumbling of him and of all Israel. For he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus that had defeated him and said, “Because the gods of the kings of Syria helped them, I will sacrifice to them that they may help me.” But they were the ruin of him and of all Israel. He offered sacrifices to the gods of Damascus, who had defeated him; for he thought, “Since the gods of the kings of Aram have helped them, I will sacrifice to them so they will help me.” But they were his downfall and the downfall of all Israel.
24 And Ahaz gathered the articles of the house of God, and he cut in pieces the articles of the house of God, and he shut up the doors of the house of YHWH, and he made for himself altars in every corner of Jerusalem. And Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God and cut in pieces the vessels of the house of God, and he shut up the doors of the house of the LORD, and he made himself altars in every corner of Jerusalem. 25 And in every city and city of Judah, he made high places to burn incense to other gods, and provoked to anger YHWH, God of his fathers. In every town in Judah he built high places to burn sacrifices to other gods and aroused the anger of the LORD, the God of his ancestors.
26 And the rest of his acts and all his ways, from the first to the last, behold, they are written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel. Now the rest of his acts and all his ways, from first to last, behold, they are written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel. The other events of his reign and all his ways, from beginning to end, are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
27 And Ahaz rested with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, in Jerusalem; but they did not bring him into the tombs of the kings of Israel. And Hezekiah his son reigned in his place. And Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, in Jerusalem, for they did not bring him into the tombs of the kings of Israel. And Hezekiah his son reigned in his place. Ahaz rested with his ancestors and was buried in the city of Jerusalem, but he was not placed in the tombs of the kings of Israel. And Hezekiah his son succeeded him as king.
