1	AND it came to pass after many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, show yourself to Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.	After many days the word of the LORD came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go, show yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain upon the earth.”	After a long time, in the third year, the word of the LORD came to Elijah: “Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land.”
2	And Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. And there was a severe famine in Samaria.	So Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria.	So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria,

5	And Ahab said to Obadiah, Go through the land, to all fountains of water and to all brooks; perhaps we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we may not lose all the beasts.	And Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the valleys. Perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, and not lose some of the animals.”	Ahab had said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs and valleys. Maybe we can find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive so we will not have to kill any of our animals.”
6	So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it; Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.	So they divided the land between them to pass through it. Ahab went in one direction by himself, and Obadiah went in another direction by himself.	So they divided the land they were to cover, Ahab going in one direction and Obadiah in another.
7	And as Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him; and he recognized him, and fell on his face and said, Is that you, my lord Elijah?	And as Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him. And Obadiah recognized him and fell on his face and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?”	As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognized him, bowed down to the ground, and said, “Is it really you, my lord Elijah?”
8	And he answered him, It is I; then he said to him, Go, tell your lord, Behold, Elijah is here.	And he answered him, “It is I. Go, tell your lord, ‘Behold, Elijah is here.’”	“Yes,” he replied. “Go tell your master, ‘Elijah is here.’”
9	And Obadiah said, What sin have I committed, that you would deliver your servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?	And he said, “How have I sinned, that you would give your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me?	“What have I done wrong,” asked Obadiah, “that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death?
10	As the LORD your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom whither my lord has not sent to seek you; and when they said, He is not here, he took an oath of the kingdoms and nations, that they had not found you.	As the LORD your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you. And when they would say, ‘He is not here,’ he would take an oath of the kingdom or nation, that they had not found you.	As surely as the LORD your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you.
11	And now you say to me, Go, tell your lord, Behold, Elijah is here.	And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here.”’	But now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’
12	And as soon as I am gone from you, the Spirit of the LORD will take you up and carry you whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find you, he shall slay me; but I your servant have revered the LORD from my youth.	And as soon as I have gone from you, the Spirit of the LORD will carry you I know not where. And so, when I come and tell Ahab and he cannot find you, he will kill me, although I your servant have feared the LORD from my youth.	I don’t know where the Spirit of the LORD may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshiped the LORD since my youth.
13	Has it not been told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of God, how I took a hundred of the prophets of the LORD and hid them by fifty in a cave and fed them with bread and water?	Has it not been told my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the LORD, how I hid a hundred men of the LORD’s prophets by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water?	Haven’t you heard, my lord, what I did while Jezebel was killing the prophets of the LORD? I hid a hundred of the LORD’s prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with food and water.
14	And now you say to me, Go, tell your lord, Behold, Elijah is here; and he shall slay me.	And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here”’; and he will kill me.”	And now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ He will kill me!”
15	And Elijah said, As the LORD of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.	And Elijah said, “As the LORD of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.”	Elijah said, “As the LORD Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present myself to Ahab today.”
16	So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told Ahab; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.	So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.	So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah.
17	And when Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, Are you he who troubles Israel?	When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is it you, you troubler of Israel?”	When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?”
18	And Elijah said to him, I have not troubled Israel; but it is you and your father's house, in that you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and have followed Baal.	And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you have, and your father’s house, because you have abandoned the commandments of the LORD and followed the Baals.	“I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you and your father’s family have. You have abandoned the LORD’s commands and have followed the Baals.
19	Now therefore send and gather to me all Israel at mount Carmel and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty and the prophets of the idols four hundred and fifty who eat at Jezebel's table.	Now therefore send and gather all Israel to me at Mount Carmel, and the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”	Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”
20	So Ahab sent to all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together to mount Carmel.	So Ahab sent to all the people of Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel.	So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.
21	Then Elijah came near to all the people, and said, How long will you halt between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him, but if Baal is god, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.	And Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” And the people did not answer him a word.	Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.” But the people said nothing.
22	Then Elijah said, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.	Then Elijah said to the people, “I, even I only, am left a prophet of the LORD, but Baal’s prophets are 450 men.	Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the LORD’s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.
23	Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces and lay it on wood and put no fire under; and I will prepare the other bullock and cut it in pieces and lay it on wood and put no fire under it.	Let two bulls be given to us, and let them choose one bull for themselves and cut it in pieces and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it. And I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood and put no fire to it.	Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it.
24	And you call on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD my God; and the God who answers by fire, he is God. And all the people answered and said, You have spoken well.	And you call upon the name of your god, and I will call upon the name of the LORD, and the God who answers by fire, he is God.” And all the people answered, “It is well spoken.”	Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The god who answers by fire—he is God.” Then all the people said, “What you say is good.”
25	Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, Choose for yourselves one bullock, and prepare it first; for you are many;	Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many, and call upon the name of your god, but put no fire to it.”	Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.”
26	And they took the bullock which was given them and prepared it and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, answer us. But there was no voice nor any that answered. And they cut themselves upon the altar which they had made.	And they took the bull that was given them, and they prepared it and called upon the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, “O Baal, answer us!” But there was no voice, and no one answered. And they limped around the altar that they had made.	So they took the bull given them and prepared it. Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.
27	And when it was noon, Elijah mocked them and said, Cry with a loud voice; for he is a god; perhaps he is meditating or he is busy or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.	And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.”	At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.”
28	And they cried with a loud voice and they cut themselves after their custom with daggers and lances, until their blood gushed out upon them.	And they cried aloud and cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances, until the blood gushed out upon them.	So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed.
29	And when midday was past, they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, but there was no voice nor any to answer nor any to listen. Then Elijah said to the prophets of the idols, Now you can move, so that I may prepare my burnt offerings. And they moved aside.	And as midday passed, they raved on until the time of the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice. No one answered; no one paid attention.	Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.
30	And Elijah said to all the people, Come near to me. And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.	Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that had been thrown down.	Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the LORD, which had been torn down.
31	And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be your name;	Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD came, saying, “Israel shall be your name,”	Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.”
32	And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD; and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.	and with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD. 33	And he put the wood in order and cut the bullock in pieces and laid it on the wood and said, Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood. 34	And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.	And he said, “Do it a second time.” And they did it a second time. And he said, “Do it a third time.” And they did it a third time.	“Do it again,” he said, and they did it again. “Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time.
35	And the water ran round about the altar; and they filled the trench also with water.	And the water ran around the altar and filled the trench also with water.	The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.
36	And at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, Elijah the prophet came near and said, O LORD God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel and that I am thy servant and that I have done all these things at thy word.	And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, “O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word.	At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.
37	Answer me, O LORD, answer me, that all this people may know that thou art the LORD God and that thou hast turned their perverse heart back again.	Answer me, O LORD, answer me, that this people may know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.”	Answer me, LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”
38	Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.	Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.	Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.
39	And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, The LORD, he is God; the LORD, he is God.	And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, “The LORD, he is God; the LORD, he is God.”	When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The LORD—he is God! The LORD—he is God!”
40	And Elijah said to them, Seize the prophets of Baal, and let not one of them escape. And they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon and slew them there.	And Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape.” And they seized them. And Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon and slaughtered them there.	Then Elijah commanded them, “Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.
41	And Elijah said to Ahab, Go up, eat and drink; for there is a rushing sound of heavy rain.	And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is a sound of the rushing of rain.”	And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.”
42	So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bent himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees;	So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Mount Carmel. And he bowed himself down on the earth and put his face between his knees.	So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.
43	And said to his servant, Go up now, and look toward the sea. And he went up and looked, and said, There is nothing. And Elijah said to him, Go again seven times.	And he said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.” And he went up and looked and said, “There is nothing.” And he said, “Go again,” seven times.	“Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked. “There is nothing there,” he said. Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”
44	And at the seventh time, he said, Behold, there is a little cloud like a man's hand rising out of the sea. And he said to him, Go up, say to Ahab, Mount your horse, and get down before the rain stops you.	And at the seventh time he said, “Behold, a little cloud like a man’s hand is rising from the sea.” And he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.’”	The seventh time the servant reported, “A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.” So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’”
45	And while he busied himself here and there, the heavens were black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.	And in a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel.	Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.
46	And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins and ran before Ahab till he entered Jezreel.	And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah, and he gathered up his garment and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.	The power of the LORD came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
