1	King Solomon fell in love with many foreign women (besides Pharaoh's daughter), including Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites.	Now King Solomon loved many foreign women, along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women,	King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh’s daughter—Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites.
2	They came from nations about which the LORD had warned the Israelites, \|You must not establish friendly relations with them! If you do, they will surely shift your allegiance to their gods.\| But Solomon was irresistibly attracted to them.	from the nations concerning which the LORD had said to the people of Israel, “You shall not enter into marriage with them, neither shall they with you, for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love.	They were from nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods.” Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love.
3	He had 700 royal wives and 300 concubines; his wives had a powerful influence over him.	He had 700 wives, who were princesses, and 300 concubines. And his wives turned away his heart.	He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray.
4	When Solomon became old, his wives shifted his allegiance to other gods; he was not wholeheartedly devoted to the LORD his God, as his father David had been.	For when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not wholly true to the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.	As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father had been.
5	Solomon worshiped the Sidonian goddess Astarte and the detestable Ammonite god Milcom.	For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.	He followed Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molek the detestable god of the Ammonites.
6	Solomon did evil in the LORD's sight; he did not remain loyal to the LORD, like his father David had.	So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and did not wholly follow the LORD, as David his father had done.	So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the LORD; he did not follow the LORD completely, as David his father had done.
7	Furthermore, on the hill east of Jerusalem Solomon built a high place for the detestable Moabite god Chemosh and for the detestable Ammonite god Milcom.	Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for Molech the abomination of the Ammonites, on the mountain east of Jerusalem.	On a hill east of Jerusalem, Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the detestable god of Moab, and for Molek the detestable god of the Ammonites.
8	He built high places for all his foreign wives so they could burn incense and make sacrifices to their gods. 9	The LORD was angry with Solomon because he had shifted his allegiance away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him on two occasions	And the LORD was angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice	The LORD became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice.
10	and had warned him about this very thing, so that he would not follow other gods. Although he had forbidden Solomon to follow other gods, Solomon did not keep the LORD’s command.
11	So the LORD said to Solomon, \|Because you insist on doing these things and have not kept the covenantal rules I gave you, I will surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant.	Therefore the LORD said to Solomon, “Since this has been your practice and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes that I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you and will give it to your servant.	So the LORD said to Solomon, “Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates.
12	However, for your father David's sake I will not do this while you are alive. I will tear it away from your son's hand instead.	Yet for the sake of David your father I will not do it in your days, but I will tear it out of the hand of your son.	Nevertheless, for the sake of David your father, I will not do it during your lifetime. I will tear it out of the hand of your son.
13	But I will not tear away the entire kingdom; I will leave your son one tribe for my servant David's sake and for the sake of my chosen city Jerusalem.\|	However, I will not tear away all the kingdom, but I will give one tribe to your son, for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem that I have chosen.”	Yet I will not tear the whole kingdom from him, but will give him one tribe for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.”
14	The LORD brought against Solomon an enemy, Hadad the Edomite, a descendant of the Edomite king.	And the LORD raised up an adversary against Solomon, Hadad the Edomite. He was of the royal house in Edom.	Then the LORD raised up against Solomon an adversary, Hadad the Edomite, from the royal line of Edom.
15	During David's campaign against Edom, Joab, the commander of the army, while on a mission to bury the dead, killed every male in Edom.	For when David was in Edom, and Joab the commander of the army went up to bury the slain, he struck down every male in Edom	Earlier when David was fighting with Edom, Joab the commander of the army, who had gone up to bury the dead, had struck down all the men in Edom.
16	For six months Joab and the entire Israelite army stayed there until they had exterminated every male in Edom.	(for Joab and all Israel remained there six months, until he had cut off every male in Edom).	Joab and all the Israelites stayed there for six months, until they had destroyed all the men in Edom.
17	Hadad, who was only a small boy at the time, escaped with some of his father's Edomite servants and headed for Egypt.	But Hadad fled to Egypt, together with certain Edomites of his father’s servants, Hadad still being a little child.	But Hadad, still only a boy, fled to Egypt with some Edomite officials who had served his father.
18	They went from Midian to Paran; they took some men from Paran and went to Egypt. Pharaoh, king of Egypt, supplied him with a house and food and even assigned him some land.	They set out from Midian and came to Paran and took men with them from Paran and came to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave him a house and assigned him an allowance of food and gave him land. Pharaoh was so pleased with Hadad that he gave him a sister of his own wife, Queen Tahpenes, in marriage.
20	Tahpenes' sister gave birth to his son, named Genubath. Tahpenes raised him in Pharaoh's palace; Genubath grew up in Pharaoh's palace among Pharaoh's sons.	And the sister of Tahpenes bore him Genubath his son, whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaoh’s house. And Genubath was in Pharaoh’s house among the sons of Pharaoh.	The sister of Tahpenes bore him a son named Genubath, whom Tahpenes brought up in the royal palace. There Genubath lived with Pharaoh’s own children.
21	While in Egypt Hadad heard that David had passed away and that Joab, the commander of the army, was dead. So Hadad asked Pharaoh, \|Give me permission to leave so I can return to my homeland.\|	But when Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers and that Joab the commander of the army was dead, Hadad said to Pharaoh, “Let me depart, that I may go to my own country.”	While he was in Egypt, Hadad heard that David rested with his ancestors and that Joab the commander of the army was also dead. Then Hadad said to Pharaoh, “Let me go, that I may return to my own country.”
22	Pharaoh said to him, \|What do you lack here that makes you want to go to your homeland?\| Hadad replied, \|Nothing, but please give me permission to leave.\|	But Pharaoh said to him, “What have you lacked with me that you are now seeking to go to your own country?” And he said to him, “Only let me depart.”	“What have you lacked here that you want to go back to your own country?” Pharaoh asked. “Nothing,” Hadad replied, “but do let me go!”
23	God also brought against Solomon another enemy, Rezon son of Eliada who had run away from his master, King Hadadezer of Zobah.	God also raised up as an adversary to him, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled from his master Hadadezer king of Zobah.	And God raised up against Solomon another adversary, Rezon son of Eliada, who had fled from his master, Hadadezer king of Zobah.
24	He gathered some men and organized a raiding band. When David tried to kill them, they went to Damascus, where they settled down and gained control of the city.	And he gathered men about him and became leader of a marauding band, after the killing by David. And they went to Damascus and lived there and made him king in Damascus.	When David destroyed Zobah’s army, Rezon gathered a band of men around him and became their leader; they went to Damascus, where they settled and took control.
25	He was Israel's enemy throughout Solomon's reign and, like Hadad, caused trouble. He loathed Israel and ruled over Syria.	He was an adversary of Israel all the days of Solomon, doing harm as Hadad did. And he loathed Israel and reigned over Syria.	Rezon was Israel’s adversary as long as Solomon lived, adding to the trouble caused by Hadad. So Rezon ruled in Aram and was hostile toward Israel.
26	Jeroboam son of Nebat, one of Solomon's servants, rebelled against the king. He was an Ephraimite from Zeredah whose mother was a widow named Zeruah.	Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of Zeredah, a servant of Solomon, whose mother’s name was Zeruah, a widow, also lifted up his hand against the king.	Also, Jeroboam son of Nebat rebelled against the king. He was one of Solomon’s officials, an Ephraimite from Zeredah, and his mother was a widow named Zeruah.
27	This is what prompted him to rebel against the king: Solomon built a terrace and he closed up a gap in the wall of the city of his father David.	And this was the reason why he lifted up his hand against the king. Solomon built the Millo, and closed up the breach of the city of David his father.	Here is the account of how he rebelled against the king: Solomon had built the terraces and had filled in the gap in the wall of the city of David his father.
28	Jeroboam was a talented man; when Solomon saw that the young man was an accomplished worker, he made him the leader of the work crew from the tribe of Joseph.	The man Jeroboam was very able, and when Solomon saw that the young man was industrious he gave him charge over all the forced labor of the house of Joseph.	Now Jeroboam was a man of standing, and when Solomon saw how well the young man did his work, he put him in charge of the whole labor force of the tribes of Joseph.
29	At that time, when Jeroboam had left Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite met him on the road; the two of them were alone in the open country. Ahijah was wearing a brand new robe,	And at that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him on the road. Now Ahijah had dressed himself in a new garment, and the two of them were alone in the open country.	About that time Jeroboam was going out of Jerusalem, and Ahijah the prophet of Shiloh met him on the way, wearing a new cloak. The two of them were alone out in the country,
30	and he grabbed the robe and tore it into twelve pieces.	Then Ahijah laid hold of the new garment that was on him, and tore it into twelve pieces.	and Ahijah took hold of the new cloak he was wearing and tore it into twelve pieces.
31	Then he told Jeroboam, \|Take ten pieces, for this is what the LORD God of Israel says: 'Look, I am about to tear the kingdom from Solomon's hand and I will give ten tribes to you.	And he said to Jeroboam, “Take for yourself ten pieces, for thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, ‘Behold, I am about to tear the kingdom from the hand of Solomon and will give you ten tribes	Then he said to Jeroboam, “Take ten pieces for yourself, for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘See, I am going to tear the kingdom out of Solomon’s hand and give you ten tribes.
32	He will retain one tribe, for my servant David's sake and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.	(but he shall have one tribe, for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city that I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel),	But for the sake of my servant David and the city of Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, he will have one tribe.
33	I am taking the kingdom from him because they have abandoned me and worshiped the Sidonian goddess Astarte, the Moabite god Chemosh, and the Ammonite god Milcom. They have not followed my instructions by doing what I approve and obeying my rules and regulations, like Solomon's father David did.	because they have forsaken me and worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of Moab, and Milcom the god of the Ammonites, and they have not walked in my ways, doing what is right in my sight and keeping my statutes and my rules, as David his father did.	I will do this because they have forsaken me and worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Molek the god of the Ammonites, and have not walked in obedience to me, nor done what is right in my eyes, nor kept my decrees and laws as David, Solomon’s father, did.
34	I will not take the whole kingdom from his hand. I will allow him to be ruler for the rest of his life for the sake of my chosen servant David who kept my commandments and rules.	Nevertheless, I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand, but I will make him ruler all the days of his life, for the sake of David my servant whom I chose, who kept my commandments and my statutes.	“’But I will not take the whole kingdom out of Solomon’s hand; I have made him ruler all the days of his life for the sake of David my servant, whom I chose and who obeyed my commands and decrees.
35	I will take the kingdom from the hand of his son and give ten tribes to you.	But I will take the kingdom out of his son’s hand and will give it to you, ten tribes.	I will take the kingdom from his son’s hands and give you ten tribes.
36	I will leave his son one tribe so my servant David's dynasty may continue to serve me in Jerusalem, the city I have chosen as my home.	Yet to his son I will give one tribe, that David my servant may always have a lamp before me in Jerusalem, the city where I have chosen to put my name.	I will give one tribe to his son so that David my servant may always have a lamp before me in Jerusalem, the city where I chose to put my Name.
37	I will select you; you will rule over all you desire to have and you will be king over Israel.	And I will take you, and you shall reign over all that your soul desires, and you shall be king over Israel.	However, as for you, I will take you, and you will rule over all that your heart desires; you will be king over Israel.
38	You must obey all I command you to do, follow my instructions, do what I approve, and keep my rules and commandments, like my servant David did. Then I will be with you and establish for you a lasting dynasty, as I did for David; I will give you Israel.	And if you will listen to all that I command you, and will walk in my ways, and do what is right in my eyes by keeping my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did, I will be with you and will build you a sure house, as I built for David, and I will give Israel to you.	If you do whatever I command you and walk in obedience to me and do what is right in my eyes by obeying my decrees and commands, as David my servant did, I will be with you. I will build you a dynasty as enduring as the one I built for David and will give Israel to you.
39	I will humiliate David's descendants because of this, but not forever.\|	And I will afflict the offspring of David because of this, but not forever.’”	I will humble David’s descendants because of this, but not forever.’”
40	Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam, but Jeroboam escaped to Egypt and found refuge with King Shishak of Egypt. He stayed in Egypt until Solomon died.	Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam. But Jeroboam arose and fled into Egypt, to Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.	Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam, but Jeroboam fled to Egypt, to Shishak the king, and stayed there until Solomon’s death.
41	The rest of the events of Solomon's reign, including all his accomplishments and his wise decisions, are recorded in the scroll called the Annals of Solomon.	Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, and all that he did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the Book of the Acts of Solomon?	As for the other events of Solomon’s reign—all he did and the wisdom he displayed—are they not written in the book of the annals of Solomon?
42	Solomon ruled over all Israel from Jerusalem for forty years.	And the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years.	Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel forty years.
43	Then Solomon passed away and was buried in the city of his father David. His son Rehoboam replaced him as king.	And Solomon slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David his father. And Rehoboam his son reigned in his place.	Then he rested with his ancestors and was buried in the city of David his father. And Rehoboam his son succeeded him as king.
