1 “Suppose there are prophets among you or those who dream dreams about the future, and they promise you signs or miracles,

1If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a sign or wonder,

2and the predicted signs or miracles occur. If they then say, ‘Come, let us worship other gods’—gods you have not known before—

2and if the sign or wonder spoken of takes place, and the prophet says, "Let us follow other gods" (gods you have not known) "and let us worship them,"

3do not listen to them. The LORD your God is testing you to see if you truly love him with all your heart and soul.

3you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The LORD your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul.

4Serve only the LORD your God and fear him alone. Obey his commands, listen to his voice, and cling to him.

4It is the LORD your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.

5The false prophets or visionaries who try to lead you astray must be put to death, for they encourage rebellion against the LORD your God, who redeemed you from slavery and brought you out of the land of Egypt. Since they try to lead you astray from the way the LORD your God commanded you to live, you must put them to death. In this way you will purge the evil from among you.

5That prophet or dreamer must be put to death for inciting rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery. 6“Suppose someone secretly entices you—even your brother, your son or daughter, your beloved wife, or your closest friend—and says, ‘Let us go worship other gods’—gods that neither you nor your ancestors have known.

6If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, "Let us go and worship other gods" (gods that neither you nor your ancestors have known,

7They might suggest that you worship the gods of peoples who live nearby or who come from the ends of the earth.

8But do not give in or listen. Have no pity, and do not spare or protect them.

14In such cases, you must examine the facts carefully. If you find that the report is true and such a detestable act has been committed among you,

14then you must inquire, probe and investigate it thoroughly. And if it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done among you,

15you must attack that town and completely destroy all its inhabitants, as well as all the livestock.

15you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. You must destroy it completely, both its people and its livestock.

16Then you must pile all the plunder in the middle of the open square and burn it. Burn the entire town as a burnt offering to the LORD your God. That town must remain a ruin forever; it may never be rebuilt.

17Keep none of the plunder that has been set apart for destruction. Then the LORD will turn from his fierce anger and be merciful to you. He will have compassion on you and make you a large nation, just as he swore to your ancestors.

18“The LORD your God will be merciful only if you listen to his voice and keep all his commands that I am giving you today, doing what pleases him.
