1O God, do not be silent! Do not be deaf. Do not be quiet, O God. | 1A song, a psalm of Asaph. O God, do not be silent! Do not ignore us! Do not be inactive, O God! |
2Don’t you hear the uproar of your enemies? Don’t you see that your arrogant enemies are rising up? | 2For look, your enemies are making a commotion; those who hate you are hostile. |
3They devise crafty schemes against your people; they conspire against your precious ones. | 3They carefully plot against your people, and make plans to harm the ones you cherish. |
4“Come,” they say, “let us wipe out Israel as a nation. We will destroy the very memory of its existence.” | 4They say, "Come on, let's annihilate them so they are no longer a nation! Then the name of Israel will be remembered no more." |
5Yes, this was their unanimous decision. They signed a treaty as allies against you— | 5Yes, they devise a unified strategy; they form an alliance against you. |
6these Edomites and Ishmaelites; Moabites and Hagrites; | 6It includes the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites, |
7Gebalites, Ammonites, and Amalekites; and people from Philistia and Tyre. | 7Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek, Philistia and the inhabitants of Tyre. |
8Assyria has joined them, too, and is allied with the descendants of Lot. Interlude | 8Even Assyria has allied with them, lending its strength to the descendants of Lot. (Selah) |

11Let their mighty nobles die as Oreb and Zeeb did. Let all their princes die like Zebah and Zalmunna, | 11Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, and all their rulers like Zebah and Zalmunna, |
12for they said, “Let us seize for our own use these pasturelands of God!” | 12who said, "Let's take over the pastures of God!" |
13O my God, scatter them like tumbleweed, like chaff before the wind! | 13O my God, make them like dead thistles, like dead weeds blown away by the wind! |
14As a fire burns a forest and as a flame sets mountains ablaze, | 14Like the fire that burns down the forest, or the flames that consume the mountainsides, |
15chase them with your fierce storm; terrify them with your tempest. | 15chase them with your gale winds, and terrify them with your windstorm. |
16Utterly disgrace them until they submit to your name, O LORD. | 16Cover their faces with shame, so they might seek you, O LORD. |
17Let them be ashamed and terrified forever. Let them die in disgrace. | 17May they be humiliated and continually terrified! May they die in shame! |
18Then they will learn that you alone are called the LORD, that you alone are the Most High, supreme over all the earth. | 18Then they will know that you alone are the LORD, the sovereign king over all the earth. |
