New Living TranslationKing James Bible
“I have told you these things so that you won’t abandon your faith.1These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.
For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God.2They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.
This is because they have never known the Father or me.3And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
Yes, I’m telling you these things now, so that when they happen, you will remember my warning. I didn’t tell you earlier because I was going to be with you for a while longer. The Work of the Holy Spirit4But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.
“But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going.5But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?
Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you.6But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you.7Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.8And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me.9Of sin, because they believe not on me;
Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more.10Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.11Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
“There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now.12I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.13Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me.14He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’ Sadness Will Be Turned to Joy15All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
“In a little while you won’t see me anymore. But a little while after that, you will see me again.”16A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
Some of the disciples asked each other, “What does he mean when he says, ‘In a little while you won’t see me, but then you will see me,’ and ‘I am going to the Father’?17Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
And what does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand.”18They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.
Jesus realized they wanted to ask him about it, so he said, “Are you asking yourselves what I meant? I said in a little while you won’t see me, but a little while after that you will see me again.19Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?
I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy.20Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
It will be like a woman suffering the pains of labor. When her child is born, her anguish gives way to joy because she has brought a new baby into the world.21A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy.22And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.
At that time you won’t need to ask me for anything. I tell you the truth, you will ask the Father directly, and he will grant your request because you use my name.23And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
You haven’t done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy.24Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
“I have spoken of these matters in figures of speech, but soon I will stop speaking figuratively and will tell you plainly all about the Father.25These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.
Then you will ask in my name. I’m not saying I will ask the Father on your behalf,26At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:
for the Father himself loves you dearly because you love me and believe that I came from God.27For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
Yes, I came from the Father into the world, and now I will leave the world and return to the Father.”28I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.
Then his disciples said, “At last you are speaking plainly and not figuratively.29His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.
Now we understand that you know everything, and there’s no need to question you. From this we believe that you came from God.”30Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
Jesus asked, “Do you finally believe?31Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?
But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me.32Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”33These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
