1The same thing happened in Iconium. Paul and Barnabas went to the Jewish synagogue and preached with such power that a great number of both Jews and Greeks became believers.

1And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed.

2Some of the Jews, however, spurned God’s message and poisoned the minds of the Gentiles against Paul and Barnabas.

2But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren.

3But the apostles stayed there a long time, preaching boldly about the grace of the Lord. And the Lord proved their message was true by giving them power to do miraculous signs and wonders.

3Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.

4But the people of the town were divided in their opinion about them. Some sided with the Jews, and some with the apostles.

4But the multitude of the city was divided: and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles.

5Then a mob of Gentiles and Jews, along with their leaders, decided to attack and stone them.

5And when there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews with their rulers, to use them despitefully, and to stone them,

6When the apostles learned of it, they fled to the region of Lycaonia—to the towns of Lystra and Derbe and the surrounding area.

6They were ware of it, and fled unto Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and unto the region that lieth round about:

7And there they preached the Good News. Paul and Barnabas in Lystra and Derbe

7And there they preached the gospel.

8While they were at Lystra, Paul and Barnabas came upon a man with crippled feet. He had been that way from birth, so he had never walked. He was sitting

8And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked:

9and listening as Paul preached. Looking straight at him, Paul realized he had faith to be healed.

9The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,

10So Paul called to him in a loud voice, “Stand up!” And the man jumped to his feet and started walking.

10Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked.

11When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in their local dialect, “These men are gods in human form!”

11And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men.

12They decided that Barnabas was the Greek god Zeus and that Paul was Hermes, since he was the chief speaker.

12And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker.

13Now the temple of Zeus was located just outside the town. So the priest of the temple and the crowd brought bulls and wreaths of flowers to the town gates, and they prepared to offer sacrifices to the apostles.

13Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people.

14But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard what was happening, they tore their clothing in dismay and ran out among the people, shouting,

14Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out,

15“Friends, why are you doing this? We are merely human beings—just like you! We have come to bring you the Good News that you should turn from these worthless things and turn to the living God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them.

15And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:

16In the past he permitted all the nations to go their own ways,

16Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways.

17but he never left them without evidence of himself and his goodness. For instance, he sends you rain and good crops and gives you food and joyful hearts.”

17Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.

18But even with these words, Paul and Barnabas could scarcely restrain the people from sacrificing to them.

18And with these sayings scarce restrained they the people, that they had not done sacrifice unto them.

19Then some Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowds to their side. They stoned Paul and dragged him out of town, thinking he was dead.

19And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and, having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead.

20But as the believers gathered around him, he got up and went back into the town. The next day he left with Barnabas for Derbe. Paul and Barnabas Return to Antioch of Syria

20Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.

21After preaching the Good News in Derbe and making many disciples, Paul and Barnabas returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch of Pisidia,

21And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch,

22where they strengthened the believers. They encouraged them to continue in the faith, reminding them that we must suffer many hardships to enter the Kingdom of God.

22Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.

23Paul and Barnabas also appointed elders in every church. With prayer and fasting, they turned the elders over to the care of the Lord, in whom they had put their trust.

23And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.

24Then they traveled back through Pisidia to Pamphylia.

24And after they had passed throughout Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia.

25They preached the word in Perga, then went down to Attalia.

25And when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down into Attalia:

26Finally, they returned by ship to Antioch of Syria, where their journey had begun. The believers there had entrusted them to the grace of God to do the work they had now completed.

26And thence sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they fulfilled.

27Upon arriving in Antioch, they called the church together and reported everything God had done through them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles, too.

27And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.

28And they stayed there with the believers for a long time.

28And there they abode long time with the disciples.
