New Living TranslationInternational Standard Version
Early on Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance.1On the first day of the week, early in the morning and while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and noticed that the stone had been removed from the tomb.
She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, “They have taken the Lord’s body out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”2So she ran off and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, whom Jesus kept loving. She told them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!"
Peter and the other disciple started out for the tomb.3So Peter and the other disciple took off for the tomb.
They were both running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.4The two of them were running together, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and came to the tomb first.
He stooped and looked in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he didn’t go in.5Bending over to look inside, he noticed the linen cloths lying there, but didn't go in.
Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there,6At this point Simon Peter arrived, following him, and went straight into the tomb. He observed that the linen cloths were lying there,
while the cloth that had covered Jesus’ head was folded up and lying apart from the other wrappings.7and that the handkerchief that had been on Jesus' head was not lying with the linen cloths but was rolled up in a separate place.
Then the disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in, and he saw and believed—8Then the other disciple, who arrived at the tomb first, went inside, looked, and believed.
for until then they still hadn’t understood the Scriptures that said Jesus must rise from the dead.9For they did not yet understand the Scripture that said that Jesus had to rise from the dead.
Then they went home. Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene10So the disciples went back to their homes.
Mary was standing outside the tomb crying, and as she wept, she stooped and looked in.11Meanwhile, Mary stood crying outside the tomb. As she cried, she bent over and looked into the tomb.
She saw two white-robed angels, one sitting at the head and the other at the foot of the place where the body of Jesus had been lying.12She saw two angels in white clothes who were sitting down, one at the head and the other at the foot of the place where Jesus' body had been lying.
“Dear woman, why are you crying?” the angels asked her. “Because they have taken away my Lord,” she replied, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”13They asked her, "Lady, why are you crying?" She told them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I don't know where they have put him."
She turned to leave and saw someone standing there. It was Jesus, but she didn’t recognize him.14After she had said this, she turned around and noticed Jesus standing there, without realizing that it was Jesus.
“Dear woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asked her. “Who are you looking for?” She thought he was the gardener. “Sir,” she said, “if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and get him.”15Jesus asked her, "Dear lady, why are you crying? Who are you looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she told him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him away."
“Mary!” Jesus said. She turned to him and cried out, “Rabboni!” (which is Hebrew for “Teacher”).16Jesus told her, "Mary!" She turned around and told him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni!" (which means "Teacher").
“Don’t cling to me,” Jesus said, “for I haven’t yet ascended to the Father. But go find my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”17Jesus told her, "Don't hold on to me, because I haven't yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, 'I'm ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'"
Mary Magdalene found the disciples and told them, “I have seen the Lord!” Then she gave them his message. Jesus Appears to His Disciples18So Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I've seen the Lord!" She also told them what he had told her.
That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said.19It was the evening of the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Jesus came and stood among them. He told them, "Peace be with you."
As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord!20After saying this, he showed them his hands and his side, and when they saw the Lord, the disciples were overjoyed.
Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.”21Jesus told them again, "Peace be with you. Just as the Father has sent me, so I am sending you."
Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.22When he had said this, he breathed on them and told them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven. If you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” Jesus Appears to Thomas23If you forgive people's sins, they are forgiven. If you retain people's sins, they are retained."
One of the twelve disciples, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), was not with the others when Jesus came.24Thomas, one of the Twelve (called the Twin), wasn't with them when Jesus came.
They told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he replied, “I won’t believe it unless I see the nail wounds in his hands, put my fingers into them, and place my hand into the wound in his side.”25So the other disciples kept telling him, "We've seen the Lord!" But he told them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands, put my finger into them, and put my hand into his side, I'll never believe!"
Eight days later the disciples were together again, and this time Thomas was with them. The doors were locked; but suddenly, as before, Jesus was standing among them. “Peace be with you,” he said.26A week later, his disciples were again inside, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were shut, Jesus came, stood among them, and said, "Peace be with you."
Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!”27Then he told Thomas, "Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Take your hand, and put it into my side. Stop doubting, but believe."
“My Lord and my God!” Thomas exclaimed.28Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!"
Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.” Purpose of the Book29Jesus told him, "Is it because you've seen me that you have believed? How blessed are those who have never seen me and yet have believed!"
The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book.30Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not recorded in this book.
But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.31But these have been recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and so that through believing you may have life in his name.
