And the LORD visited Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah as He had spoken.1The LORD visited Sarah just as he had said he would and did for Sarah what he had promised.
For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.2So Sarah became pregnant and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the appointed time that God had told him.
And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him—whom Sarah bore to him—Isaac.3Abraham named his son--whom Sarah bore to him--Isaac.
Then Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.4When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him just as God had commanded him to do.
Now Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.5(Now Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.)
And Sarah said, “God has made me laugh, and all who hear will laugh with me.”6Sarah said, "God has made me laugh. Everyone who hears about this will laugh with me."
She also said, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? For I have borne him a son in his old age.”7She went on to say, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have given birth to a son for him in his old age!"
So the child grew and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the same day that Isaac was weaned.8The child grew and was weaned. Abraham prepared a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.
And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, scoffing.9But Sarah noticed the son of Hagar the Egyptian--the son whom Hagar had borne to Abraham--mocking.
Therefore she said to Abraham, “Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, namely with Isaac.”10So she said to Abraham, "Banish that slave woman and her son, for the son of that slave woman will not be an heir along with my son Isaac!"
And the matter was very displeasing in Abraham’s sight because of his son.11Sarah's demand displeased Abraham greatly because Ishmael was his son.
But God said to Abraham, “Do not let it be displeasing in your sight because of the lad or because of your bondwoman. Whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice; for in Isaac your seed shall be called.12But God said to Abraham, "Do not be upset about the boy or your slave wife. Do all that Sarah is telling you because through Isaac your descendants will be counted.
Yet I will also make a nation of the son of the bondwoman, because he is your seed.”13But I will also make the son of the slave wife into a great nation, for he is your descendant too."
So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water; and putting it on her shoulder, he gave it and the boy to Hagar, and sent her away. Then she departed and wandered in the Wilderness of Beersheba.14Early in the morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He put them on her shoulders, gave her the child, and sent her away. So she went wandering aimlessly through the wilderness of Beer Sheba.
And the water in the skin was used up, and she placed the boy under one of the shrubs.15When the water in the skin was gone, she shoved the child under one of the shrubs.
Then she went and sat down across from him at a distance of about a bowshot; for she said to herself, “Let me not see the death of the boy.” So she sat opposite him, and lifted her voice and wept.16Then she went and sat down by herself across from him at quite a distance, about a bowshot away; for she thought, "I refuse to watch the child die." So she sat across from him and wept uncontrollably.
And God heard the voice of the lad. Then the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said to her, “What ails you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is.17But God heard the boy's voice. The angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and asked her, "What is the matter, Hagar? Don't be afraid, for God has heard the boy's voice right where he is crying.
Arise, lift up the lad and hold him with your hand, for I will make him a great nation.”18Get up! Help the boy up and hold him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation."
Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad a drink.19Then God enabled Hagar to see a well of water. She went over and filled the skin with water, and then gave the boy a drink.
So God was with the lad; and he grew and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.20God was with the boy as he grew. He lived in the wilderness and became an archer.
He dwelt in the Wilderness of Paran; and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.21He lived in the wilderness of Paran. His mother found a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
And it came to pass at that time that Abimelech and Phichol, the commander of his army, spoke to Abraham, saying, “God is with you in all that you do.22At that time Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, said to Abraham, "God is with you in all that you do.
Now therefore, swear to me by God that you will not deal falsely with me, with my offspring, or with my posterity; but that according to the kindness that I have done to you, you will do to me and to the land in which you have dwelt.”23Now swear to me right here in God's name that you will not deceive me, my children, or my descendants. Show me, and the land where you are staying, the same loyalty that I have shown you."
And Abraham said, “I will swear.”24Abraham said, "I swear to do this."
Then Abraham rebuked Abimelech because of a well of water which Abimelech’s servants had seized.25But Abraham lodged a complaint against Abimelech concerning a well that Abimelech's servants had seized.
And Abimelech said, “I do not know who has done this thing; you did not tell me, nor had I heard of it until today.”26"I do not know who has done this thing," Abimelech replied. "Moreover, you did not tell me. I did not hear about it until today."
So Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech, and the two of them made a covenant.27Abraham took some sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelech. The two of them made a treaty.
And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.28Then Abraham set seven ewe lambs apart from the flock by themselves.
Then Abimelech asked Abraham, “What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs which you have set by themselves?”29Abimelech asked Abraham, "What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs that you have set apart?"
And he said, “You will take these seven ewe lambs from my hand, that they may be my witness that I have dug this well.”30He replied, "You must take these seven ewe lambs from my hand as legal proof that I dug this well."
Therefore he called that place Beersheba, because the two of them swore an oath there.31That is why he named that place Beer Sheba, because the two of them swore an oath there.
Thus they made a covenant at Beersheba. So Abimelech rose with Phichol, the commander of his army, and they returned to the land of the Philistines.32So they made a treaty at Beer Sheba. Then Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, returned to the land of the Philistines.
Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there called on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God.33Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beer Sheba. There he worshiped the LORD, the eternal God.
And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines many days.34So Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines for quite some time.
