Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh's officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there. | 1When Joseph was taken to Egypt by the Ishmaelite traders, he was purchased by Potiphar, an Egyptian officer. Potiphar was captain of the guard for Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. |
The LORD was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. | 2The LORD was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master. |
When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did, | 3Potiphar noticed this and realized that the LORD was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did. |
Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. | 4This pleased Potiphar, so he soon made Joseph his personal attendant. He put him in charge of his entire household and everything he owned. |
From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. | 5From the day Joseph was put in charge of his master’s household and property, the LORD began to bless Potiphar’s household for Joseph’s sake. All his household affairs ran smoothly, and his crops and livestock flourished. |
So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph's care; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, | 6So Potiphar gave Joseph complete administrative responsibility over everything he owned. With Joseph there, he didn’t worry about a thing—except what kind of food to eat! Joseph was a very handsome and well-built young man, |
and after a while his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, "Come to bed with me!" | 7and Potiphar’s wife soon began to look at him lustfully. “Come and sleep with me,” she demanded. |
But he refused. "With me in charge," he told her, "my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. | 8But Joseph refused. “Look,” he told her, “my master trusts me with everything in his entire household. |
No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?" | 9No one here has more authority than I do. He has held back nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.” |
And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her. | 10She kept putting pressure on Joseph day after day, but he refused to sleep with her, and he kept out of her way as much as possible. |
One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside. | 11One day, however, no one else was around when he went in to do his work. |
She caught him by his cloak and said, "Come to bed with me!" But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house. | 12She came and grabbed him by his cloak, demanding, “Come on, sleep with me!” Joseph tore himself away, but he left his cloak in her hand as he ran from the house. |
When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, | 13When she saw that she was holding his cloak and he had fled, |
she called her household servants. "Look," she said to them, "this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us! He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed. | 14she called out to her servants. Soon all the men came running. “Look!” she said. “My husband has brought this Hebrew slave here to make fools of us! He came into my room to rape me, but I screamed. |
When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house." | 15When he heard me scream, he ran outside and got away, but he left his cloak behind with me.” |
She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. | 16She kept the cloak with her until her husband came home. |
Then she told him this story: "That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me. | 17Then she told him her story. “That Hebrew slave you’ve brought into our house tried to come in and fool around with me,” she said. |
But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house." | 18“But when I screamed, he ran outside, leaving his cloak with me!” Joseph Put in Prison |
When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, "This is how your slave treated me," he burned with anger. | 19Potiphar was furious when he heard his wife’s story about how Joseph had treated her. |
Joseph's master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king's prisoners were confined. But while Joseph was there in the prison, | 20So he took Joseph and threw him into the prison where the king’s prisoners were held, and there he remained. |
the LORD was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. | 21But the LORD was with Joseph in the prison and showed him his faithful love. And the LORD made Joseph a favorite with the prison warden. |
So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there. | 22Before long, the warden put Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners and over everything that happened in the prison. |
The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph's care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did. | 23The warden had no more worries, because Joseph took care of everything. The LORD was with him and caused everything he did to succeed. |
