| 1Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah, with his garments stained crimson? Who is this, robed in splendor, striding forward in the greatness of his strength? Who is this one wearing royal attire, who marches confidently because of his great strength? "It is I, the one who announces vindication, and who is able to deliver!" |
| 2Why are your garments red, like those of one treading the winepress? | 2Why are your clothes red? Why do you look like someone who has stomped on grapes in a vat? |
| 3"I have trodden the winepress alone; from the nations no one was with me. I trampled them in my anger and trod them down in my wrath; their blood spattered my garments, and I stained all my clothing. | 3"I have stomped grapes in the winepress all by myself; no one from the nations joined me. I stomped on them in my anger; I trampled them down in my rage. Their juice splashed on my garments, and stained all my clothes. |
| 4It was for me the day of vengeance; the year for me to redeem had come. | 4For I looked forward to the day of vengeance, and then payback time arrived. |

| 13who led them through the depths? Like a horse in open country, they did not stumble; | 13who led them through the deep water? Like a horse running on flat land they did not stumble. |
| 14like cattle that go down to the plain, they were given rest by the Spirit of the LORD. This is how you guided your people to make for yourself a glorious name. | 14Like an animal that goes down into a valley to graze, so the Spirit of the LORD granted them rest. In this way you guided your people, gaining for yourself an honored reputation. |
| 15Look down from heaven and see, from your lofty throne, holy and glorious. Where are your zeal and your might? Your tenderness and compassion are withheld from us. | 15Look down from heaven and take notice, from your holy, majestic palace! Where are your zeal and power? | 17Why, LORD, do you make us wander from your ways and harden our hearts so we do not revere you? Return for the sake of your servants, the tribes of your inheritance! |
| 18For a little while your people possessed your holy place, but now our enemies have trampled down your sanctuary. | 18For a short time your special nation possessed a land, but then our adversaries knocked down your holy sanctuary. |
| 19We are yours from of old; but you have not ruled over them, they have not been called by your name. | 19We existed from ancient times, but you did not rule over them, they were not your subjects. |
