One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer--at three in the afternoon.1One afternoon, Peter and John were on their way to the Temple for the three o'clock prayer time.
Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts.2Now a man who had been crippled from birth was being carried in. Every day people would lay him at what was called the Beautiful Gate so that he could beg from those who were going into the Temple.
When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money.3When he saw that Peter and John were about to go into the Temple, he asked them to give him something.
Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, "Look at us!"4Peter, along with John, looked him straight in the eye and said, "Look at us!"
So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.5So the man watched them closely, expecting to get something from them.
Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk."6However, Peter said, "I don't have any silver or gold, but I'll give you what I do have. In the name of Jesus the Messiah from Nazareth, walk!"
Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became strong.7Then Peter took hold of his right hand and began to help him up. Immediately his feet and ankles became strong,
He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God.8and he sprang to his feet, stood up, and began to walk. Then he went with them into the Temple, walking, jumping, and praising God.
When all the people saw him walking and praising God,9When all the people saw him walking and praising God,
they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.10they knew that he was the man who used to sit and beg at the Beautiful Gate of the Temple, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.
While the man held on to Peter and John, all the people were astonished and came running to them in the place called Solomon's Colonnade.11While he was holding on to Peter and John, all the people came running to them in what was called "Solomon's Colonnade". They were dumbfounded.
When Peter saw this, he said to them: "Fellow Israelites, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk?12When Peter saw this, he told the people: "Fellow Israelis, why are you wondering about this, and why are you staring at us as if by our own power or godliness we made him walk?
The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go.13The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—the God of our ancestors—has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you betrayed and rejected in the presence of Pilate, even though he had decided to let him go.
You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you.14You rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked to have a murderer released to you,
You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this.15and you killed the source of life, whom God raised from the dead. We are witnesses to that.
By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus' name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see.16It is his name—that is, by faith in his name—that has healed this man whom you see and know. Yes, the faith that comes through Jesus has given him this perfect health in the presence of all of you.
"Now, fellow Israelites, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did your leaders.17"And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance like your leaders.
But this is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Messiah would suffer.18This is how God fulfilled what he had predicted through the voice of all the prophets—that his Messiah would suffer.
Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,19Therefore, repent and turn to him to have your sins blotted out,
and that he may send the Messiah, who has been appointed for you--even Jesus.20so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord and so that he may send you Jesus, whom he appointed long ago to be the Messiah.
Heaven must receive him until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets.21He must remain in heaven until the time of universal restitution, which God announced long ago through the voice of his holy prophets.
For Moses said, 'The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you.22In fact, Moses said, 'The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must listen to everything he tells you.
Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from their people.'23Any person who will not listen to that prophet will be utterly destroyed from among the people.'
"Indeed, beginning with Samuel, all the prophets who have spoken have foretold these days.24"Indeed, all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and those who followed him, also announced these days.
And you are heirs of the prophets and of the covenant God made with your fathers. He said to Abraham, 'Through your offspring all peoples on earth will be blessed.'25You are the descendants of the prophets and the heirs of the covenant that God made with your ancestors when he told Abraham, 'Through your descendant all the families of the earth will be blessed.'
When God raised up his servant, he sent him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways."26When God raised up his servant, he sent him first to you to bless you by turning every one of you from your evil ways."
