"All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. | 1"I have told you these things to keep you from stumbling. |
They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. | 2They will ban you from the synagogues. In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering service to God. |
They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. | 3They will do these things because they haven't known the Father or me. |
I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, | 4But I have told you these things so that when their time comes you will remember I told them to you. I didn't tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you. |
but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' | 5But now I am going away to him who sent me, and not one of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' |
Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. | 6Yet, because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. |
But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. | 7Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don't go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send him to you. |
When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: | 8When he comes, he will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment: |
about sin, because people do not believe in me; | 9About sin, because they do not believe in me; |
about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; | 10about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me; |
and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. | 11and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. |
"I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. | 12"I still have many things to tell you, but you can't bear them now. |
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. | 13When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. For he will not speak on his own, but he will speak whatever he hears. He will also declare to you what is to come. |
He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. | 14He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. |
All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you." | 15Everything the Father has is mine. This is why I told you that he takes from what is mine and will declare it to you. |
Jesus went on to say, "In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me." | 16"A little while and you will no longer see me; again a little while and you will see me." |
At this, some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?" | 17Then some of his disciples said to one another, "What is this he's telling us: 'A little while and you will not see me; again a little while and you will see me' and, 'because I am going to the Father'?" |
They kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't understand what he is saying." | 18They said, "What is this he is saying, 'A little while'? We don't know what he's talking about." |
Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'? | 19Jesus knew they wanted to ask him, and so he said to them, "Are you asking one another about what I said, 'A little while and you will not see me; again a little while and you will see me'? |
Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. | 20Truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice. You will become sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn to joy. |
A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. | 21When a woman is in labor, she has pain because her time has come. But when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the suffering because of the joy that a person has been born into the world. |
So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. | 22So you also have sorrow now. But I will see you again. Your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy from you. |
In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. | 23"In that day you will not ask me anything. Truly I tell you, anything you ask the Father in my name, he will give you. |
Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. | 24Until now you have asked for nothing in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. |
"Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. | 25"I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. A time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. |
In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. | 26On that day you will ask in my name, and I am not telling you that I will ask the Father on your behalf. |
No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. | 27For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. |
I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." | 28I came from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father." |
Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. | 29His disciples said, "Look, now you're speaking plainly and not using any figurative language. |
Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God." | 30Now we know that you know everything and don't need anyone to question you. By this we believe that you came from God." |
"Do you now believe?" Jesus replied. | 31Jesus responded to them, "Do you now believe? |
"A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. | 32Indeed, an hour is coming, and has come, when each of you will be scattered to his own home, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. |
"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." | 33I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world." |
