The Proverbs of Solomon: A wise child makes a father rejoice, but a foolish child is a grief to his mother. 1The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.
Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit, but righteousness delivers from mortal danger. 2Ill-gotten treasures have no lasting value, but righteousness delivers from death.
The LORD satisfies the appetite of the righteous, but he thwarts the craving of the wicked. 3The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry, but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.
The one who is lazy becomes poor, but the one who works diligently becomes wealthy. 4Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.
The one who gathers crops in the summer is a wise son, but the one who sleeps during the harvest is a son who brings shame to himself. 5He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.
Blessings are on the head of the righteous, but the speech of the wicked conceals violence. 6Blessings crown the head of the righteous, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked.
The memory of the righteous is a blessing, but the reputation of the wicked will rot. 7The name of the righteous is used in blessings, but the name of the wicked will rot.
The wise person accepts instructions, but the one who speaks foolishness will come to ruin. 8The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin.
The one who conducts himself in integrity will live securely, but the one who behaves perversely will be found out. 9Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.
The one who winks his eye causes trouble, and the one who speaks foolishness will come to ruin. 10Whoever winks maliciously causes grief, and a chattering fool comes to ruin.
The teaching of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the speech of the wicked conceals violence. 11The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers all transgressions. 12Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs.
Wisdom is found in the words of the discerning person, but the one who lacks wisdom will be disciplined. 13Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for the back of one who has no sense.
Those who are wise store up knowledge, but foolish speech leads to imminent destruction. 14The wise store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool invites ruin.
The wealth of a rich person is like a fortified city, but the poor are brought to ruin by their poverty. 15The wealth of the rich is their fortified city, but poverty is the ruin of the poor.
The reward which the righteous receive is life; the recompense which the wicked receive is judgment. 16The wages of the righteous is life, but the earnings of the wicked are sin and death.
The one who heeds instruction is on the way to life, but the one who rejects rebuke goes astray. 17Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.
The one who conceals hatred utters lies, and the one who spreads slander is certainly a fool. 18Whoever conceals hatred with lying lips and spreads slander is a fool.
When words abound, transgression is inevitable, but the one who restrains his words is wise. 19Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues.
What the righteous say is like the best silver, but what the wicked think is of little value. 20The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked is of little value.
The teaching of the righteous feeds many, but fools die for lack of wisdom. 21The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of sense.
The blessing from the LORD makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow to it. 22The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, without painful toil for it.
Carrying out a wicked scheme is enjoyable to a fool, and so is wisdom for the one who has discernment. 23A fool finds pleasure in wicked schemes, but a person of understanding delights in wisdom.
What the wicked fears will come on him; what the righteous desire will be granted. 24What the wicked dread will overtake them; what the righteous desire will be granted.
When the storm passes through, the wicked are swept away, but the righteous are an everlasting foundation. 25When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone, but the righteous stand firm forever.
Like vinegar to the teeth and like smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to those who send him. 26As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so are sluggards to those who send them.
Fearing the LORD prolongs life, but the life span of the wicked will be shortened. 27The fear of the LORD adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short.
The hope of the righteous is joy, but the expectation of the wicked will remain unfulfilled. 28The prospect of the righteous is joy, but the hopes of the wicked come to nothing.
The way of the LORD is like a stronghold for the upright, but it is destruction to evildoers. 29The way of the LORD is a refuge for the blameless, but it is the ruin of those who do evil.
The righteous will never be moved, but the wicked will not inhabit the land. 30The righteous will never be uprooted, but the wicked will not remain in the land.
The speech of the righteous bears the fruit of wisdom, but the one who speaks perversion will be destroyed. 31From the mouth of the righteous comes the fruit of wisdom, but a perverse tongue will be silenced.
The lips of the righteous know what is pleasing, but the speech of the wicked is perverse. 32The lips of the righteous know what finds favor, but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse.
