NET BibleNew International Version
The LORD abhors dishonest scales, but an accurate weight is his delight. 1The LORD detests dishonest scales, but accurate weights find favor with him.
When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. 2When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.
The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the unfaithful destroys them. 3The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.
Wealth does not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from mortal danger. 4Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.
The righteousness of the blameless will make straight their way, but the wicked person will fall by his own wickedness. 5The righteousness of the blameless makes their paths straight, but the wicked are brought down by their own wickedness.
The righteousness of the upright will deliver them, but the faithless will be captured by their own desires. 6The righteousness of the upright delivers them, but the unfaithful are trapped by evil desires.
When a wicked person dies, his expectation perishes, and the hope of his strength perishes. 7Hopes placed in mortals die with them; all the promise of their power comes to nothing.
The righteous person is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked turns up in his stead. 8The righteous person is rescued from trouble, and it falls on the wicked instead.
With his speech the godless person destroys his neighbor, but by knowledge the righteous will be delivered. 9With their mouths the godless destroy their neighbors, but through knowledge the righteous escape.
When the righteous do well, the city rejoices; when the wicked perish, there is joy. 10When the righteous prosper, the city rejoices; when the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy.
A city is exalted by the blessing provided from the upright, but it is destroyed by the counsel of the wicked. 11Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed.
The one who denounces his neighbor lacks wisdom, but the one who has discernment keeps silent. 12Whoever derides their neighbor has no sense, but the one who has understanding holds their tongue.
The one who goes about slandering others reveals secrets, but the one who is trustworthy conceals a matter. 13A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.
When there is no guidance a nation falls, but there is success in the abundance of counselors. 14For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.
The one who puts up security for a stranger will surely have trouble, but whoever avoids shaking hands will be secure. 15Whoever puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer, but whoever refuses to shake hands in pledge is safe.
A generous woman gains honor, and ruthless men seize wealth. 16A kindhearted woman gains honor, but ruthless men gain only wealth.
A kind person benefits himself, but a cruel person brings himself trouble. 17Those who are kind benefit themselves, but the cruel bring ruin on themselves.
The wicked person earns deceitful wages, but the one who sows righteousness reaps a genuine reward. 18A wicked person earns deceptive wages, but the one who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward.
True righteousness leads to life, but the one who pursues evil pursues it to his own death. 19Truly the righteous attain life, but whoever pursues evil finds death.
The LORD abhors those who are perverse in heart, but those who are blameless in their ways are his delight. 20The LORD detests those whose hearts are perverse, but he delights in those whose ways are blameless.
Be assured that the evil person will certainly be punished, but the descendants of the righteous will not suffer unjust judgment. 21Be sure of this: The wicked will not go unpunished, but those who are righteous will go free.
Like a gold ring in a pig's snout is a beautiful woman who rejects discretion. 22Like a gold ring in a pig's snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion.
What the righteous desire leads only to good, but what the wicked hope for leads to wrath. 23The desire of the righteous ends only in good, but the hope of the wicked only in wrath.
One person is generous and yet grows more wealthy, but another withholds more than he should and comes to poverty. 24One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.
A generous person will be enriched, and the one who provides water for others will himself be satisfied. 25A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.
People will curse the one who withholds grain, but they will praise the one who sells it. 26People curse the one who hoards grain, but they pray God's blessing on the one who is willing to sell.
The one who diligently seeks good seeks favor, but the one who searches for evil--it will come to him. 27Whoever seeks good finds favor, but evil comes to one who searches for it.
The one who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf. 28Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.
The one who troubles his family will inherit nothing, and the fool will be a servant to the wise person. 29Whoever brings ruin on their family will inherit only wind, and the fool will be servant to the wise.
The fruit of the righteous is like a tree producing life, and the one who wins souls is wise. 30The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and the one who is wise saves lives.
If the righteous are recompensed on earth, how much more the wicked sinner! 31If the righteous receive their due on earth, how much more the ungodly and the sinner!
