The Proverbs of Solomon: A wise child makes a father rejoice, but a foolish child is a grief to his mother. 1The proverbs of Solomon: A wise child brings joy to a father; a foolish child brings grief to a mother.
Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit, but righteousness delivers from mortal danger. 2Tainted wealth has no lasting value, but right living can save your life.
The LORD satisfies the appetite of the righteous, but he thwarts the craving of the wicked. 3The LORD will not let the godly go hungry, but he refuses to satisfy the craving of the wicked.
The one who is lazy becomes poor, but the one who works diligently becomes wealthy. 4Lazy people are soon poor; hard workers get rich.
The one who gathers crops in the summer is a wise son, but the one who sleeps during the harvest is a son who brings shame to himself. 5A wise youth harvests in the summer, but one who sleeps during harvest is a disgrace.
Blessings are on the head of the righteous, but the speech of the wicked conceals violence. 6The godly are showered with blessings; the words of the wicked conceal violent intentions.
The memory of the righteous is a blessing, but the reputation of the wicked will rot. 7We have happy memories of the godly, but the name of a wicked person rots away.
The wise person accepts instructions, but the one who speaks foolishness will come to ruin. 8The wise are glad to be instructed, but babbling fools fall flat on their faces.
The one who conducts himself in integrity will live securely, but the one who behaves perversely will be found out. 9People with integrity walk safely, but those who follow crooked paths will be exposed.
The one who winks his eye causes trouble, and the one who speaks foolishness will come to ruin. 10People who wink at wrong cause trouble, but a bold reproof promotes peace.
The teaching of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the speech of the wicked conceals violence. 11The words of the godly are a life-giving fountain; the words of the wicked conceal violent intentions.
Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers all transgressions. 12Hatred stirs up quarrels, but love makes up for all offenses.
Wisdom is found in the words of the discerning person, but the one who lacks wisdom will be disciplined. 13Wise words come from the lips of people with understanding, but those lacking sense will be beaten with a rod.
Those who are wise store up knowledge, but foolish speech leads to imminent destruction. 14Wise people treasure knowledge, but the babbling of a fool invites disaster.
The wealth of a rich person is like a fortified city, but the poor are brought to ruin by their poverty. 15The wealth of the rich is their fortress; the poverty of the poor is their destruction.
The reward which the righteous receive is life; the recompense which the wicked receive is judgment. 16The earnings of the godly enhance their lives, but evil people squander their money on sin.
The one who heeds instruction is on the way to life, but the one who rejects rebuke goes astray. 17People who accept discipline are on the pathway to life, but those who ignore correction will go astray.
The one who conceals hatred utters lies, and the one who spreads slander is certainly a fool. 18Hiding hatred makes you a liar; slandering others makes you a fool.
When words abound, transgression is inevitable, but the one who restrains his words is wise. 19Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut.
What the righteous say is like the best silver, but what the wicked think is of little value. 20The words of the godly are like sterling silver; the heart of a fool is worthless.
The teaching of the righteous feeds many, but fools die for lack of wisdom. 21The words of the godly encourage many, but fools are destroyed by their lack of common sense.
The blessing from the LORD makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow to it. 22The blessing of the LORD makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.
Carrying out a wicked scheme is enjoyable to a fool, and so is wisdom for the one who has discernment. 23Doing wrong is fun for a fool, but living wisely brings pleasure to the sensible.
What the wicked fears will come on him; what the righteous desire will be granted. 24The fears of the wicked will be fulfilled; the hopes of the godly will be granted.
When the storm passes through, the wicked are swept away, but the righteous are an everlasting foundation. 25When the storms of life come, the wicked are whirled away, but the godly have a lasting foundation.
Like vinegar to the teeth and like smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to those who send him. 26Lazy people irritate their employers, like vinegar to the teeth or smoke in the eyes.
Fearing the LORD prolongs life, but the life span of the wicked will be shortened. 27Fear of the LORD lengthens one’s life, but the years of the wicked are cut short.
The hope of the righteous is joy, but the expectation of the wicked will remain unfulfilled. 28The hopes of the godly result in happiness, but the expectations of the wicked come to nothing.
The way of the LORD is like a stronghold for the upright, but it is destruction to evildoers. 29The way of the LORD is a stronghold to those with integrity, but it destroys the wicked.
The righteous will never be moved, but the wicked will not inhabit the land. 30The godly will never be disturbed, but the wicked will be removed from the land.
The speech of the righteous bears the fruit of wisdom, but the one who speaks perversion will be destroyed. 31The mouth of the godly person gives wise advice, but the tongue that deceives will be cut off.
The lips of the righteous know what is pleasing, but the speech of the wicked is perverse. 32The lips of the godly speak helpful words, but the mouth of the wicked speaks perverse words.
