Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, partners in a heavenly calling, take note of Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess, | 1Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, set your focus on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess. |
who is faithful to the one who appointed him, as Moses was also in God's house. | 2He was faithful to the One who appointed Him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. |
For he has come to deserve greater glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house deserves greater honor than the house itself! | 3For Jesus has been counted worthy of greater glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. |
For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God. | 4And every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. |
Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant, to testify to the things that would be spoken. | 5Now Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house, testifying to what would be spoken later. |
But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. We are of his house, if in fact we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope we take pride in. | 6But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are His house, if we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope of which we boast. |
Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, "Oh, that today you would listen as he speaks! | 7Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear His voice, |
"Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, in the day of testing in the wilderness. | 8do not harden your hearts, as you did in the rebellion, in the day of testing in the wilderness, |
"There your fathers tested me and tried me, and they saw my works for forty years. | 9where your fathers tested and tried Me, and for forty years saw My works. |
"Therefore, I became provoked at that generation and said, 'Their hearts are always wandering and they have not known my ways.' | 10Therefore I was angry with that generation, and I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known My ways.’ |
"As I swore in my anger, 'They will never enter my rest!'" | 11So I swore on oath in My anger, ‘They shall never enter My rest.’ ” |
See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has an evil, unbelieving heart that forsakes the living God. | 12See to it, brothers, that none of you has a wicked heart of unbelief that turns away from the living God. |
But exhort one another each day, as long as it is called "Today," that none of you may become hardened by sin's deception. | 13But exhort one another daily, as long as it is called today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. |
For we have become partners with Christ, if in fact we hold our initial confidence firm until the end. | 14We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly to the end the assurance we had at first. |
As it says, "Oh, that today you would listen as he speaks! Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion." | 15As it has been said: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts, as you did in the rebellion.” |
For which ones heard and rebelled? Was it not all who came out of Egypt under Moses' leadership? | 16For who were the ones who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? |
And against whom was God provoked for forty years? Was it not those who sinned, whose dead bodies fell in the wilderness? | 17And with whom was God angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? |
And to whom did he swear they would never enter into his rest, except those who were disobedient? | 18And to whom did He swear that they would never enter His rest? Was it not to those who disobeyed? |
So we see that they could not enter because of unbelief. | 19So we see that it was because of their unbelief that they were unable to enter. |
