Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had not given birth to any children, but she had an Egyptian servant named Hagar.1Now Abram’s wife Sarai had borne him no children, but she had an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar.
So Sarai said to Abram, "Since the LORD has prevented me from having children, have sexual relations with my servant. Perhaps I can have a family by her." Abram did what Sarai told him. 2So Sarai said to Abram, “Look now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Please go to my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
So after Abram had lived in Canaan for ten years, Sarai, Abram's wife, gave Hagar, her Egyptian servant, to her husband to be his wife.3So after he had lived in Canaan for ten years, his wife Sarai took her Egyptian maidservant Hagar and gave her to Abram to be his wife.
He had sexual relations with Hagar, and she became pregnant. Once Hagar realized she was pregnant, she despised Sarai.4And he slept with Hagar, and she conceived. But when Hagar realized that she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.
Then Sarai said to Abram, "You have brought this wrong on me! I allowed my servant to have sexual relations with you, but when she realized that she was pregnant, she despised me. May the LORD judge between you and me!" 5Then Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be upon you! I delivered my servant into your arms, and ever since she saw that she was pregnant, she has treated me with contempt. May the LORD judge between you and me.”
Abram said to Sarai, "Since your servant is under your authority, do to her whatever you think best." Then Sarai treated Hagar harshly, so she ran away from Sarai. 6“Here,” said Abram, “your servant is in your hands. Do whatever you want with her.” Then Sarai treated Hagar so harshly that she fled from her.
The LORD's angel found Hagar near a spring of water in the desert--the spring that is along the road to Shur.7Now the angel of the LORD found Hagar by a spring of water in the desert—the spring along the road to Shur.
He said, "Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?" She replied, "I'm running away from my mistress, Sarai." 8“Hagar, servant of Sarai,” he said, “where have you come from, and where are you going?” “I am running away from my mistress Sarai,” she replied.
Then the LORD's angel said to her, "Return to your mistress and submit to her authority.9So the angel of the LORD told her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her authority.”
I will greatly multiply your descendants," the LORD's angel added, "so that they will be too numerous to count."10Then the angel added, “I will greatly multiply your offspring so that they will be too numerous to count.”
Then the LORD's angel said to her, "You are now pregnant and are about to give birth to a son. You are to name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your painful groans. 11The angel of the LORD proceeded: “Behold, you have conceived and will bear a son. And you shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of affliction.
He will be a wild donkey of a man. He will be hostile to everyone, and everyone will be hostile to him. He will live away from his brothers." 12He will be a wild donkey of a man, and his hand will be against everyone, and everyone’s hand against him; he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.”
So Hagar named the LORD who spoke to her, "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "Here I have seen one who sees me!"13So Hagar gave this name to the LORD who had spoken to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “Here I have seen the One who sees me!”
That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi. (It is located between Kadesh and Bered.) 14Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi. It is located between Kadesh and Bered.
So Hagar gave birth to Abram's son, whom Abram named Ishmael.15And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne.
(Now Abram was 86 years old when Hagar gave birth to Ishmael.) 16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him.
