Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. | 1After this, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. |
And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. | 2After fasting for 40 days and 40 nights, he finally became hungry. |
And the tempter came and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread." | 3Then the tempter came. "Since you are the Son of God," he said, "tell these stones to become loaves of bread." |
But He answered and said, "It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.'" | 4But he answered, "It is written, 'One must not live on bread alone, but on every word coming out of the mouth of God.'" |
Then the devil took Him into the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, | 5Then the devil took him to the Holy City and had him stand on the highest point of the Temple. |
and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, 'HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS CONCERNING YOU'; and 'ON their HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP, SO THAT YOU WILL NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.'" | 6He told Jesus, "Since you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, because it is written, 'God will put his angels in charge of you,' and, 'With their hands they will hold you up, so that you will never hit your foot against a rock.'" |
Jesus said to him, "On the other hand, it is written, 'YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.'" | 7Jesus responded to him, "It is also written, 'You must not tempt the Lord your God.'" |
Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; | 8Once more the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, along with their splendor. |
and he said to Him, "All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me." | 9He told Jesus, "I will give you all these things if you will bow down and worship me!" |
Then Jesus said to him, "Go, Satan! For it is written, 'YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD, AND SERVE HIM ONLY.'" | 10Then Jesus told him, "Go away, Satan! Because it is written, 'You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'" |
Then the devil left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him. | 11So the devil left him, and angels came and began ministering to him. |
Now when Jesus heard that John had been taken into custody, He withdrew into Galilee; | 12Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he went back to Galilee. |
and leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. | 13He left Nazareth and settled in Capernaum by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, |
This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet: | 14in order to fulfill what was declared by the prophet Isaiah when he said, |
"THE LAND OF ZEBULUN AND THE LAND OF NAPHTALI, BY THE WAY OF THE SEA, BEYOND THE JORDAN, GALILEE OF THE GENTILES-- | 15"O Land of Zebulun and Land of Naphtali, on the road to the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the unbelievers! |
"THE PEOPLE WHO WERE SITTING IN DARKNESS SAW A GREAT LIGHT, AND THOSE WHO WERE SITTING IN THE LAND AND SHADOW OF DEATH, UPON THEM A LIGHT DAWNED." | 16The people living in darkness have seen a great light, and for those living in the land and shadow of death, a light has risen." |
From that time Jesus began to preach and say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." | 17From then on, Jesus began to announce, "Repent, because the kingdom from heaven is near!" |
Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. | 18While Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon (also called Peter) and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea, because they were fishermen. |
And He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." | 19"Follow me," he told them, "and I will make you fishers of people!" |
Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. | 20So at once they left their nets and followed him. |
Going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. | 21Going on from there he saw two other brothers—James, son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee repairing their nets. When he called them, |
Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him. | 22they immediately left the boat and their father and followed him. |
Jesus was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people. | 23Then he went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every illness among the people. |
The news about Him spread throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all who were ill, those suffering with various diseases and pains, demoniacs, epileptics, paralytics; and He healed them. | 24His fame spread throughout Syria, and people brought to him everyone who was sick—those afflicted with various diseases and pains, the demon-possessed, the epileptics, and the paralyzed—and he healed them. |
Large crowds followed Him from Galilee and the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and from beyond the Jordan. | 25Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and from across the Jordan followed him. |
