Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.1Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry.2After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
And the tempter came and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread."3The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread."
But He answered and said, "It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.'"4Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"
Then the devil took Him into the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple,5Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.
and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, 'HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS CONCERNING YOU'; and 'ON their HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP, SO THAT YOU WILL NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.'"6"If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: "'He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'"
Jesus said to him, "On the other hand, it is written, 'YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.'"7Jesus answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"
Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory;8Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.
and he said to Him, "All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me."9"All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me."
Then Jesus said to him, "Go, Satan! For it is written, 'YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD, AND SERVE HIM ONLY.'"10Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'"
Then the devil left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him.11Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
Now when Jesus heard that John had been taken into custody, He withdrew into Galilee;12When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee.
and leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali.13Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali--
This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet:14to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:
"THE LAND OF ZEBULUN AND THE LAND OF NAPHTALI, BY THE WAY OF THE SEA, BEYOND THE JORDAN, GALILEE OF THE GENTILES--15"Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles--
"THE PEOPLE WHO WERE SITTING IN DARKNESS SAW A GREAT LIGHT, AND THOSE WHO WERE SITTING IN THE LAND AND SHADOW OF DEATH, UPON THEM A LIGHT DAWNED."16the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned."
From that time Jesus began to preach and say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."17From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near."
Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.18As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.
And He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men."19"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people."
Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.20At once they left their nets and followed him.
Going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them.21Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them,
Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.22and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Jesus was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people.23Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.
The news about Him spread throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all who were ill, those suffering with various diseases and pains, demoniacs, epileptics, paralytics; and He healed them.24News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed; and he healed them.
