| 1To the chief Musician, Altaschith, A Psalm or Song of Asaph. Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we give thanks: for that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare. | 1We thank you, O God! We give thanks because you are near. People everywhere tell of your wonderful deeds. |
| 2When I shall receive the congregation I will judge uprightly. | 2God says, “At the time I have planned, I will bring justice against the wicked. |
| 3The earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved: I bear up the pillars of it. Selah. | 3When the earth quakes and its people live in turmoil, I am the one who keeps its foundations firm. Interlude |
| 4I said unto the fools, Deal not foolishly: and to the wicked, Lift not up the horn: | 4“I warned the proud, ‘Stop your boasting!’ I told the wicked, ‘Don’t raise your fists! |
| 5Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck. | 5Don’t raise your fists in defiance at the heavens or speak with such arrogance.’” |
| 6For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. | 6For no one on earth—from east or west, or even from the wilderness— should raise a defiant fist. |
| 7But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another. | 7It is God alone who judges; he decides who will rise and who will fall. |
| 8For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out, and drink them. | 8For the LORD holds a cup in his hand that is full of foaming wine mixed with spices. He pours out the wine in judgment, and all the wicked must drink it, draining it to the dregs. |
| 9But I will declare for ever; I will sing praises to the God of Jacob. | 9But as for me, I will always proclaim what God has done; I will sing praises to the God of Jacob. |
| 10All the horns of the wicked also will I cut off; but the horns of the righteous shall be exalted. | 10For God says, “I will break the strength of the wicked, but I will increase the power of the godly.” |
