John 16
KJV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
King James BibleNew Living Translation
These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.1 “I have told you these things so that you won’t abandon your faith.
They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.2 For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God.
And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.3 This is because they have never known the Father or me.
But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.4 Yes, I’m telling you these things now, so that when they happen, you will remember my warning. I didn’t tell you earlier because I was going to be with you for a while longer. The Work of the Holy Spirit
But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?5 “But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going.
But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.6 Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you.
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.7 But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you.
And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:8 And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.
Of sin, because they believe not on me;9 The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me.
Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;10 Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more.
Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.11 Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.
I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.12 “There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now.
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.
He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.14 He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me.
All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.15 All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’ Sadness Will Be Turned to Joy
A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.16 “In a little while you won’t see me anymore. But a little while after that, you will see me again.”
Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?17Some of the disciples asked each other, “What does he mean when he says, ‘In a little while you won’t see me, but then you will see me,’ and ‘I am going to the Father’?
They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.18And what does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand.”
Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?19Jesus realized they wanted to ask him about it, so he said, “Are you asking yourselves what I meant? I said in a little while you won’t see me, but a little while after that you will see me again.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy.
A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.21 It will be like a woman suffering the pains of labor. When her child is born, her anguish gives way to joy because she has brought a new baby into the world.
And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.22 So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy.
And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.23 At that time you won’t need to ask me for anything. I tell you the truth, you will ask the Father directly, and he will grant your request because you use my name.
Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.24 You haven’t done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy.
These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.25 “I have spoken of these matters in figures of speech, but soon I will stop speaking figuratively and will tell you plainly all about the Father.
At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:26 Then you will ask in my name. I’m not saying I will ask the Father on your behalf,
For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.27 for the Father himself loves you dearly because you love me and believe that I came from God.
I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.28 Yes, I came from the Father into the world, and now I will leave the world and return to the Father.”
His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.29Then his disciples said, “At last you are speaking plainly and not figuratively.
Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.30Now we understand that you know everything, and there’s no need to question you. From this we believe that you came from God.”
Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?31Jesus asked, “Do you finally believe?
Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.32 But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me.
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.33 I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
