King James Bible | New International Version |
Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. | 1Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; |
And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai. | 2so she said to Abram, "The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her." Abram agreed to what Sarai said. |
And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. | 3So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. |
And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes. | 4He slept with Hagar, and she conceived. When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. |
And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee. | 5Then Sarai said to Abram, "You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the LORD judge between you and me." |
But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face. | 6"Your slave is in your hands," Abram said. "Do with her whatever you think best." Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her. |
And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. | 7The angel of the LORD found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. |
And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai. | 8And he said, "Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?" "I'm running away from my mistress Sarai," she answered. |
And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands. | 9Then the angel of the LORD told her, "Go back to your mistress and submit to her." |
And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude. | 10The angel added, "I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count." |
And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction. | 11The angel of the LORD also said to her: "You are now pregnant and you will give birth to a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard of your misery. |
And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. | 12He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone's hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers." |
And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me? | 13She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "I have now seen the One who sees me." |
Wherefore the well was called Beerlahairoi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered. | 14That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered. |
And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael. | 15So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne. |
And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram. | 16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael. |
