Meanwhile, Joseph had been delivered to Egypt and turned over to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's court officials and the Commander-in-Chief of the imperial guards. An Egyptian, he bought Joseph from the Ishmaelites, who had brought him down there.1When Joseph was taken to Egypt by the Ishmaelite traders, he was purchased by Potiphar, an Egyptian officer. Potiphar was captain of the guard for Pharaoh, the king of Egypt.
But the LORD was with Joseph. He became a very prosperous man while in the house of his Egyptian master, 2The LORD was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master.
who could see that the LORD was with Joseph, because the LORD made everything prosper that Joseph did. 3Potiphar noticed this and realized that the LORD was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did.
That's how Joseph pleased Potiphar as he served him. Eventually, Potiphar appointed Joseph as overseer of his entire household. Moreover, he entrusted everything that he owned into his care.4This pleased Potiphar, so he soon made Joseph his personal attendant. He put him in charge of his entire household and everything he owned.
From the time he appointed Joseph to be overseer over his entire household and everything that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The LORD's blessing rested on Joseph, whether in Potiphar's household or in Potiphar's fields. 5From the day Joseph was put in charge of his master’s household and property, the LORD began to bless Potiphar’s household for Joseph’s sake. All his household affairs ran smoothly, and his crops and livestock flourished.
Everything that he owned, he entrusted into Joseph's care. He never concerned himself about anything, except for the food he ate. Now Joseph was well built and good looking. 6So Potiphar gave Joseph complete administrative responsibility over everything he owned. With Joseph there, he didn’t worry about a thing—except what kind of food to eat! Joseph was a very handsome and well-built young man,
That's why, sometime later, Joseph's master's wife looked straight at Joseph and propositioned him: "Come on! Let's have a little sex!" 7and Potiphar’s wife soon began to look at him lustfully. “Come and sleep with me,” she demanded.
But he refused, telling his master's wife, "Look! My master doesn't have to worry about anything in the house with me in charge, and he has entrusted everything into my care. 8But Joseph refused. “Look,” he told her, “my master trusts me with everything in his entire household.
No one has more authority in this house than I do. He has withheld nothing from me, except you, and that's because you're his wife. So how can I commit such a horrible evil? How can I sin against God?"9No one here has more authority than I do. He has held back nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.”
She kept on talking to him like this day after day, but he wouldn't listen to her. Not only would he refuse to have sex with her, he refused even to stay around her. 10She kept putting pressure on Joseph day after day, but he refused to sleep with her, and he kept out of her way as much as possible.
One day, though, he went into the house to do his work. None of the household servants were inside, 11One day, however, no one else was around when he went in to do his work.
so she grabbed Joseph by his outer garment and demanded "Let's have some sex!" Instead, Joseph ran outside, leaving his outer garment still in her hand. 12She came and grabbed him by his cloak, demanding, “Come on, sleep with me!” Joseph tore himself away, but he left his cloak in her hand as he ran from the house.
When she realized that he had left his outer garment right there in her hand, she ran outside 13When she saw that she was holding his cloak and he had fled,
and yelled for her household servants. "Look!" she cried out. "My husband brought in a Hebrew man to humiliate us. He came in here to have sex with me, but I screamed out loud! 14she called out to her servants. Soon all the men came running. “Look!” she said. “My husband has brought this Hebrew slave here to make fools of us! He came into my room to rape me, but I screamed.
When he heard me starting to scream, he left his outer garment with me and fled outside." 15When he heard me scream, he ran outside and got away, but he left his cloak behind with me.”
She kept his outer garment by her side until Joseph's master came home, 16She kept the cloak with her until her husband came home.
and then this is what she told him: "That Hebrew slave whom you brought to us came in here to rape me. 17Then she told him her story. “That Hebrew slave you’ve brought into our house tried to come in and fool around with me,” she said.
But when I started to scream, he left his outer garment with me and ran outside."18“But when I screamed, he ran outside, leaving his cloak with me!” Joseph Put in Prison
When Joseph's master heard his wife's claim to the effect that "This is how your servant treated me," he flew into a rage, 19Potiphar was furious when he heard his wife’s story about how Joseph had treated her.
arrested Joseph, and locked him up in the same prison where the king's prisoners were confined. So Joseph remained there in prison.20So he took Joseph and threw him into the prison where the king’s prisoners were held, and there he remained.
But the LORD was with Joseph. He extended gracious love to him, causing the prison warden to be pleased with Joseph.21But the LORD was with Joseph in the prison and showed him his faithful love. And the LORD made Joseph a favorite with the prison warden.
So the prison warden entrusted into Joseph's care all the prisoners who were confined in prison. Whatever they did, Joseph was in charge of the work detail.22Before long, the warden put Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners and over everything that happened in the prison.
The prison warden did not have to worry about anything under Joseph's care, because the LORD was with him. That's why Joseph prospered in everything he did.23The warden had no more worries, because Joseph took care of everything. The LORD was with him and caused everything he did to succeed.
