Meanwhile, Joseph had been delivered to Egypt and turned over to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's court officials and the Commander-in-Chief of the imperial guards. An Egyptian, he bought Joseph from the Ishmaelites, who had brought him down there.1Meanwhile, Joseph had been taken down to Egypt, where an Egyptian named Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.
But the LORD was with Joseph. He became a very prosperous man while in the house of his Egyptian master, 2And the LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, serving in the household of his Egyptian master.
who could see that the LORD was with Joseph, because the LORD made everything prosper that Joseph did. 3When his master saw that the LORD was with him and made him prosper in all he did,
That's how Joseph pleased Potiphar as he served him. Eventually, Potiphar appointed Joseph as overseer of his entire household. Moreover, he entrusted everything that he owned into his care.4Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household and entrusted him with everything he owned.
From the time he appointed Joseph to be overseer over his entire household and everything that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The LORD's blessing rested on Joseph, whether in Potiphar's household or in Potiphar's fields. 5From the time that he put Joseph in charge of his household and all he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s household on account of him. The LORD’s blessing was on everything he owned, both in his house and in his field.
Everything that he owned, he entrusted into Joseph's care. He never concerned himself about anything, except for the food he ate. Now Joseph was well built and good looking. 6So Potiphar left all that he owned in Joseph’s care; he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,
That's why, sometime later, Joseph's master's wife looked straight at Joseph and propositioned him: "Come on! Let's have a little sex!" 7and after some time his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph and said, “Sleep with me.”
But he refused, telling his master's wife, "Look! My master doesn't have to worry about anything in the house with me in charge, and he has entrusted everything into my care. 8But he refused. “Look,” he said to his master’s wife, “with me here, my master does not concern himself with anything in his house, and he has entrusted everything he owns to my care.
No one has more authority in this house than I do. He has withheld nothing from me, except you, and that's because you're his wife. So how can I commit such a horrible evil? How can I sin against God?"9No one in this house is greater than I am. He has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do such a great evil and sin against God?”
She kept on talking to him like this day after day, but he wouldn't listen to her. Not only would he refuse to have sex with her, he refused even to stay around her. 10Although Potiphar’s wife spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be near her.
One day, though, he went into the house to do his work. None of the household servants were inside, 11One day, however, Joseph went into the house to attend to his work, and not a single household servant was inside.
so she grabbed Joseph by his outer garment and demanded "Let's have some sex!" Instead, Joseph ran outside, leaving his outer garment still in her hand. 12She grabbed Joseph by his cloak and said, “Sleep with me!” But leaving his cloak in her hand, he escaped and ran outside.
When she realized that he had left his outer garment right there in her hand, she ran outside 13When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house,
and yelled for her household servants. "Look!" she cried out. "My husband brought in a Hebrew man to humiliate us. He came in here to have sex with me, but I screamed out loud! 14she called her household servants. “Look,” she said, “this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us. He came to me so he could sleep with me, but I screamed as loud as I could.
When he heard me starting to scream, he left his outer garment with me and fled outside." 15When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”
She kept his outer garment by her side until Joseph's master came home, 16So Potiphar’s wife kept Joseph’s cloak beside her until his master came home.
and then this is what she told him: "That Hebrew slave whom you brought to us came in here to rape me. 17Then she told him the same story: “The Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me,
But when I started to scream, he left his outer garment with me and ran outside."18but when I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”
When Joseph's master heard his wife's claim to the effect that "This is how your servant treated me," he flew into a rage, 19When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is what your slave did to me,” he burned with anger.
arrested Joseph, and locked him up in the same prison where the king's prisoners were confined. So Joseph remained there in prison.20So Joseph’s master took him and had him thrown into the prison where the king’s prisoners were confined. While Joseph was there in the prison,
But the LORD was with Joseph. He extended gracious love to him, causing the prison warden to be pleased with Joseph.21the LORD was with him and extended kindness to him, granting him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.
So the prison warden entrusted into Joseph's care all the prisoners who were confined in prison. Whatever they did, Joseph was in charge of the work detail.22And the warden put all the prisoners under Joseph’s care, so that he was responsible for all that was done in the prison.
The prison warden did not have to worry about anything under Joseph's care, because the LORD was with him. That's why Joseph prospered in everything he did.23The warden did not concern himself with anything under Joseph’s care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.
