| 1Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, | 1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, |
| 2keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that lay before Him endured a cross and despised the shame and has sat down at the right hand of God's throne. | 2fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. |
| 3For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, so that you won't grow weary and lose heart. | 3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. |

| 7Endure suffering as discipline: God is dealing with you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline? | 7Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? |
| 8But if you are without discipline--which all receive--then you are illegitimate children and not sons. | 8If you are not disciplined--and everyone undergoes discipline--then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. |
| 9Furthermore, we had natural fathers discipline us, and we respected them. Shouldn't we submit even more to the Father of spirits and live? | 9Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! |
| 10For they disciplined us for a short time based on what seemed good to them, but He does it for our benefit, so that we can share His holiness. | 10They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. |
| 11No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. | 16And make sure that there isn't any immoral or irreverent person like Esau, who sold his birthright in exchange for one meal. | 16See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son. |
| 17For you know that later, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected because he didn't find any opportunity for repentance, though he sought it with tears. | 17Afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. | 18For you have not come to what could be touched, to a blazing fire, to darkness, gloom, and storm, | 18You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom and storm; |
| 19to the blast of a trumpet, and the sound of words. (Those who heard it begged that not another word be spoken to them, | 19to a trumpet blast or to such a voice speaking words that those who heard it begged that no further word be spoken to them, |
| 20for they could not bear what was commanded: And if even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned! | 20because they could not bear what was commanded: "If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned to death." |

| 25Make sure that you do not reject the One who speaks. For if they did not escape when they rejected Him who warned them on earth, even less will we if we turn away from Him who warns us from heaven. | 25See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. | 28Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us hold on to grace.
