Holman Christian Standard BibleEnglish Standard Version
After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield; your reward will be very great. 1After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.”
But Abram said, "Lord GOD, what can You give me, since I am childless and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?"2But Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”
Abram continued, "Look, You have given me no offspring, so a slave born in my house will be my heir." 3And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.”
Now the word of the LORD came to him: "This one will not be your heir; instead, one who comes from your own body will be your heir." 4And behold, the word of the LORD came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.”
He took him outside and said, "Look at the sky and count the stars, if you are able to count them." Then He said to him, "Your offspring will be that numerous." 5And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”
Abram believed the LORD, and He credited it to him as righteousness. 6And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
He also said to him, "I am Yahweh who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess." 7And he said to him, “I am the LORD who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.”
But he said, "Lord GOD, how can I know that I will possess it?" 8But he said, “O Lord GOD, how am I to know that I shall possess it?”
He said to him, "Bring Me a three-year-old cow, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon." 9He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”
So he brought all these to Him, split them down the middle, and laid the pieces opposite each other, but he did not cut up the birds.10And he brought him all these, cut them in half, and laid each half over against the other. But he did not cut the birds in half.
Birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away. 11And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
As the sun was setting, a deep sleep fell on Abram, and suddenly great terror and darkness descended on him. 12As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. And behold, dreadful and great darkness fell upon him.
Then the LORD said to Abram, "Know this for certain: Your offspring will be foreigners in a land that does not belong to them; they will be enslaved and oppressed 400 years.13Then the LORD said to Abram, “Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years.
However, I will judge the nation they serve, and afterward they will go out with many possessions.14But I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions.
But you will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a ripe old age.15As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age.
In the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure." 16And they shall come back here in the fourth generation, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”
When the sun had set and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch appeared and passed between the divided animals.17When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.
On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, "I give this land to your offspring, from the brook of Egypt to the Euphrates River:18On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates,
the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 19the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites,
Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaim, 20the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,
Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites, and Jebusites." 21the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.”
