Exodus 20
ESV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
English Standard VersionNew Living Translation
And God spoke all these words, saying,1Then God gave the people all these instructions :
“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.2“I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.
“You shall have no other gods before me.3“You must not have any other god but me.
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.4“You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.
You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,5You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.
but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.6But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.
“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.7“You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.8“Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
Six days you shall labor, and do all your work,9You have six days each week for your ordinary work,
but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates.10but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you.
For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.11For in six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.12“Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
“You shall not murder.13“You must not murder.
“You shall not commit adultery.14“You must not commit adultery.
“You shall not steal.15“You must not steal.
“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.16“You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.
“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”17“You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.”
Now when all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, the people were afraid and trembled, and they stood far off18When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the ram’s horn, and when they saw the flashes of lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain, they stood at a distance, trembling with fear.
and said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.”19And they said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen. But don’t let God speak directly to us, or we will die!”
Moses said to the people, “Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin.”20“Don’t be afraid,” Moses answered them, “for God has come in this way to test you, and so that your fear of him will keep you from sinning!”
The people stood far off, while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.21As the people stood in the distance, Moses approached the dark cloud where God was. Proper Use of Altars
And the LORD said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the people of Israel: ‘You have seen for yourselves that I have talked with you from heaven.22And the LORD said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: You saw for yourselves that I spoke to you from heaven.
You shall not make gods of silver to be with me, nor shall you make for yourselves gods of gold.23Remember, you must not make any idols of silver or gold to rival me.
An altar of earth you shall make for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I cause my name to be remembered I will come to you and bless you.24“Build for me an altar made of earth, and offer your sacrifices to me—your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep and goats, and your cattle. Build my altar wherever I cause my name to be remembered, and I will come to you and bless you.
If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stones, for if you wield your tool on it you profane it.25If you use stones to build my altar, use only natural, uncut stones. Do not shape the stones with a tool, for that would make the altar unfit for holy use.
And you shall not go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness be not exposed on it.’26And do not approach my altar by going up steps. If you do, someone might look up under your clothing and see your nakedness.
