The LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did to Sarah as he had promised. | 1Then the LORD took note of Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah as He had promised. |
And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him. | 2So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time of which God had spoken to him. |
Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore him, Isaac. | 3Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac. |
And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. | 4Then Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. |
Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. | 5Now Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. |
And Sarah said, “God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh over me.” | 6Sarah said, "God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh with me." |
And she said, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.” | 7And she said, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age." |
And the child grew and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. | 8The child grew and was weaned, and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. |
But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, laughing. | 9Now Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, mocking. |
So she said to Abraham, “Cast out this slave woman with her son, for the son of this slave woman shall not be heir with my son Isaac.” | 10Therefore she said to Abraham, "Drive out this maid and her son, for the son of this maid shall not be an heir with my son Isaac." |
And the thing was very displeasing to Abraham on account of his son. | 11The matter distressed Abraham greatly because of his son. |
But God said to Abraham, “Be not displeased because of the boy and because of your slave woman. Whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for through Isaac shall your offspring be named. | 12But God said to Abraham, "Do not be distressed because of the lad and your maid; whatever Sarah tells you, listen to her, for through Isaac your descendants shall be named. |
And I will make a nation of the son of the slave woman also, because he is your offspring.” | 13"And of the son of the maid I will make a nation also, because he is your descendant." |
So Abraham rose early in the morning and took bread and a skin of water and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. | 14So Abraham rose early in the morning and took bread and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar, putting them on her shoulder, and gave her the boy, and sent her away. And she departed and wandered about in the wilderness of Beersheba. |
When the water in the skin was gone, she put the child under one of the bushes. | 15When the water in the skin was used up, she left the boy under one of the bushes. |
Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot, for she said, “Let me not look on the death of the child.” And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept. | 16Then she went and sat down opposite him, about a bowshot away, for she said, "Do not let me see the boy die." And she sat opposite him, and lifted up her voice and wept. |
And God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. | 17God heard the lad crying; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, "What is the matter with you, Hagar? Do not fear, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is. |
Up! Lift up the boy, and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make him into a great nation.” | 18"Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him by the hand, for I will make a great nation of him." |
Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink. | 19Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water; and she went and filled the skin with water and gave the lad a drink. |
And God was with the boy, and he grew up. He lived in the wilderness and became an expert with the bow. | 20God was with the lad, and he grew; and he lived in the wilderness and became an archer. |
He lived in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt. | 21He lived in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt. |
At that time Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army said to Abraham, “God is with you in all that you do. | 22Now it came about at that time that Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, spoke to Abraham, saying, "God is with you in all that you do; |
Now therefore swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my descendants or with my posterity, but as I have dealt kindly with you, so you will deal with me and with the land where you have sojourned.” | 23now therefore, swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my offspring or with my posterity, but according to the kindness that I have shown to you, you shall show to me and to the land in which you have sojourned." |
And Abraham said, “I will swear.” | 24Abraham said, "I swear it." |
When Abraham reproved Abimelech about a well of water that Abimelech’s servants had seized, | 25But Abraham complained to Abimelech because of the well of water which the servants of Abimelech had seized. |
Abimelech said, “I do not know who has done this thing; you did not tell me, and I have not heard of it until today.” | 26And Abimelech said, "I do not know who has done this thing; you did not tell me, nor did I hear of it until today." |
So Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech, and the two men made a covenant. | 27Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech, and the two of them made a covenant. |
Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock apart. | 28Then Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves. |
And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs that you have set apart?” | 29Abimelech said to Abraham, "What do these seven ewe lambs mean, which you have set by themselves?" |
He said, “These seven ewe lambs you will take from my hand, that this may be a witness for me that I dug this well.” | 30He said, "You shall take these seven ewe lambs from my hand so that it may be a witness to me, that I dug this well." |
Therefore that place was called Beersheba, because there both of them swore an oath. | 31Therefore he called that place Beersheba, because there the two of them took an oath. |
So they made a covenant at Beersheba. Then Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army rose up and returned to the land of the Philistines. | 32So they made a covenant at Beersheba; and Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, arose and returned to the land of the Philistines. |
Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba and called there on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God. | 33Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God. |
And Abraham sojourned many days in the land of the Philistines. | 34And Abraham sojourned in the land of the Philistines for many days. |
