English Standard VersionChristian Standard Bible
Now when David lived in his house, David said to Nathan the prophet, “Behold, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD is under a tent.”1When David had settled into his palace, he said to the prophet Nathan, "Look! I am living in a cedar house while the ark of the LORD's covenant is under tent curtains."
And Nathan said to David, “Do all that is in your heart, for God is with you.”2So Nathan told David, "Do all that is on your mind, for God is with you."
But that same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan,3But that night the word of God came to Nathan:
“Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD: It is not you who will build me a house to dwell in.4"Go to David my servant and say, 'This is what the LORD says: You are not the one to build me a house to dwell in.
For I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up Israel to this day, but I have gone from tent to tent and from dwelling to dwelling.5From the time I brought Israel out of Egypt until today I have not dwelt in a house; instead, I have moved from one tent site to another, and from one tabernacle location to another.
In all places where I have moved with all Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’6In all my journeys throughout Israel, have I ever spoken a word to even one of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people, asking: Why haven't you built me a house of cedar?'
Now, therefore, thus shall you say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people Israel,7"So now this is what you are to say to my servant David: 'This is what the LORD of Armies says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, to be ruler over my people Israel.
and I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a name, like the name of the great ones of the earth.8I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. I will make a name for you like that of the greatest on the earth.
And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall waste them no more, as formerly,9I will designate a place for my people Israel and plant them, so that they may live there and not be disturbed again. Evildoers will not continue to oppress them as they have done
from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover, I declare to you that the LORD will build you a house.10ever since the day I ordered judges to be over my people Israel. I will also subdue all your enemies. "'Furthermore, I declare to you that the LORD himself will build a house for you.
When your days are fulfilled to walk with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom.11When your time comes to be with your fathers, I will raise up after you your descendant, who is one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom.
He shall build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever.12He is the one who will build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever.
I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. I will not take my steadfast love from him, as I took it from him who was before you,13I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will not remove my faithful love from him as I removed it from the one who was before you.
but I will confirm him in my house and in my kingdom forever, and his throne shall be established forever.’”14I will appoint him over my house and my kingdom forever, and his throne will be established forever.'"
In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.15Nathan reported all these words and this entire vision to David.
Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and said, “Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far?16Then King David went in, sat in the LORD's presence, and said, Who am I, LORD God, and what is my house that you have brought me this far?
And this was a small thing in your eyes, O God. You have also spoken of your servant’s house for a great while to come, and have shown me future generations, O LORD God!17This was a little thing to you, God, for you have spoken about your servant's house in the distant future. You regard me as a man of distinction, LORD God.
And what more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant.18What more can David say to you for honoring your servant? You know your servant.
For your servant’s sake, O LORD, and according to your own heart, you have done all this greatness, in making known all these great things.19LORD, you have done this whole great thing, making known all these great promises for the sake of your servant and according to your will.
There is none like you, O LORD, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.20LORD, there is no one like you, and there is no God besides you, as all we have heard confirms.
And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making for yourself a name for great and awesome things, in driving out nations before your people whom you redeemed from Egypt?21And who is like your people Israel? God, you came to one nation on earth to redeem a people for yourself, to make a name for yourself through great and awesome works by driving out nations before your people you redeemed from Egypt.
And you made your people Israel to be your people forever, and you, O LORD, became their God.22You made your people Israel your own people forever, and you, LORD, have become their God.
And now, O LORD, let the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house be established forever, and do as you have spoken,23Now, LORD, let the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and his house be confirmed forever, and do as you have promised.
and your name will be established and magnified forever, saying, ‘The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, is Israel’s God,’ and the house of your servant David will be established before you.24Let your name be confirmed and magnified forever in the saying, "The LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, is God over Israel." May the house of your servant David be established before you.
For you, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. Therefore your servant has found courage to pray before you.25Since you, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build him a house, your servant has found courage to pray in your presence.
And now, O LORD, you are God, and you have promised this good thing to your servant.26LORD, you indeed are God, and you have promised this good thing to your servant.
Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever before you, for it is you, O LORD, who have blessed, and it is blessed forever.”27So now, you have been pleased to bless your servant's house that it may continue before you forever. For you, LORD, have blessed it, and it is blessed forever.
