Abram's wife Sarai had not borne any children for him, but she owned an Egyptian slave named Hagar. | 1Now Sarai, Abram's wife had borne him no children, and she had an Egyptian maid whose name was Hagar. |
Sarai said to Abram, "Since the LORD has prevented me from bearing children, go to my slave; perhaps through her I can build a family." And Abram agreed to what Sarai said. | 2So Sarai said to Abram, "Now behold, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Please go in to my maid; perhaps I will obtain children through her." And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. |
So Abram's wife Sarai took Hagar, her Egyptian slave, and gave her to her husband Abram as a wife for him. This happened after Abram had lived in the land of Canaan ten years. | 3After Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Abram's wife Sarai took Hagar the Egyptian, her maid, and gave her to her husband Abram as his wife. |
He slept with Hagar, and she became pregnant. When she saw that she was pregnant, her mistress became contemptible to her. | 4He went in to Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her sight. |
Then Sarai said to Abram, "You are responsible for my suffering! I put my slave in your arms, and when she saw that she was pregnant, I became contemptible to her. May the LORD judge between me and you." | 5And Sarai said to Abram, "May the wrong done me be upon you. I gave my maid into your arms, but when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her sight. May the LORD judge between you and me." |
Abram replied to Sarai, "Here, your slave is in your hands; do whatever you want with her." Then Sarai mistreated her so much that she ran away from her. | 6But Abram said to Sarai, "Behold, your maid is in your power; do to her what is good in your sight." So Sarai treated her harshly, and she fled from her presence. |
The angel of the LORD found her by a spring in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. | 7Now the angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur. |
He said, "Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?" She replied, "I'm running away from my mistress Sarai." | 8He said, "Hagar, Sarai's maid, where have you come from and where are you going?" And she said, "I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai." |
The angel of the LORD said to her, "Go back to your mistress and submit to her authority." | 9Then the angel of the LORD said to her, "Return to your mistress, and submit yourself to her authority." |
The angel of the LORD said to her, "I will greatly multiply your offspring, and they will be too many to count." | 10Moreover, the angel of the LORD said to her, "I will greatly multiply your descendants so that they will be too many to count." |
The angel of the LORD said to her, "You have conceived and will have a son. You will name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of affliction. | 11The angel of the LORD said to her further, "Behold, you are with child, And you will bear a son; And you shall call his name Ishmael, Because the LORD has given heed to your affliction. |
This man will be like a wild donkey. His hand will be against everyone, and everyone's hand will be against him; he will settle near all his relatives." | 12"He will be a wild donkey of a man, His hand will be against everyone, And everyone's hand will be against him; And he will live to the east of all his brothers." |
So she named the LORD who spoke to her: "You are El-roi," for she said, "In this place, have I actually seen the one who sees me?" | 13Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, "You are a God who sees"; for she said, "Have I even remained alive here after seeing Him?" |
That is why the well is called Beer-lahai-roi. It is between Kadesh and Bered. | 14Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered. |
So Hagar gave birth to Abram's son, and Abram named his son (whom Hagar bore) Ishmael. | 15So Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. |
Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him. | 16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him. |
