Paul, called as an apostle of Christ Jesus by God's will, and Sosthenes our brother:1Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother,
To the church of God at Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called as saints, with all those in every place who call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord--both their Lord and ours.2Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.3Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
I always thank my God for you because of the grace of God given to you in Christ Jesus,4I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ;
that you were enriched in him in every way, in all speech and all knowledge.5That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge;
In this way, the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you,6Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you:
so that you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.7So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:
He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you will be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.8Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
God is faithful; you were called by him into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.9God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
Now I urge you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, that there be no divisions among you, and that you be united with the same understanding and the same conviction.10Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
For it has been reported to me about you, my brothers and sisters, by members of Chloe's people, that there is rivalry among you.11For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.
What I am saying is this: One of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ."12Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.
Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in Paul's name?13Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?
I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius,14I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;
so that no one can say you were baptized in my name.15Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.
I did, in fact, baptize the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don't recall if I baptized anyone else.16And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel--not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ will not be emptied of its effect.17For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but it is the power of God to us who are being saved.18For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will set aside the intelligence of the intelligent.19For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.
Where is the one who is wise? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the debater of this age? Hasn't God made the world's wisdom foolish?20Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
For since, in God's wisdom, the world did not know God through wisdom, God was pleased to save those who believe through the foolishness of what is preached.21For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
For the Jews ask for signs and the Greeks seek wisdom,22For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles.23But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;
Yet to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God,24But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
because God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God's weakness is stronger than human strength.25Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
Brothers and sisters, consider your calling: Not many were wise from a human perspective, not many powerful, not many of noble birth.26For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
Instead, God has chosen what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen what is weak in the world to shame the strong.27But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
God has chosen what is insignificant and despised in the world--what is viewed as nothing--to bring to nothing what is viewed as something,28And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:
so that no one may boast in his presence.29That no flesh should glory in his presence.
It is from him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became wisdom from God for us--our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption,30But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
in order that, as it is written: Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.31That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
