Now when Solomon had finished building the house of the LORD and the royal palace, and had achieved all that he had desired to do, | 1After Solomon finished building the LORD's temple, the royal palace, and all the other construction projects he had planned, |
the LORD appeared to him a second time, as He had appeared to him at Gibeon. | 2the LORD appeared to Solomon a second time, in the same way he had appeared to him at Gibeon. |
And the LORD said to him: “I have heard your prayer and petition before Me. I have consecrated this temple you have built by putting My Name there forever; My eyes and My heart will be there for all time. | 3The LORD said to him, "I have answered your prayer and your request for help that you made to me. I have consecrated this temple you built by making it my permanent home; I will be constantly present there. |
And as for you, if you walk before Me as your father David walked, with a heart of integrity and uprightness, doing all I have commanded you, and if you keep My statutes and ordinances, | 4You must serve me with integrity and sincerity, just as your father David did. Do everything I commanded and obey my rules and regulations. |
then I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever, as I promised your father David when I said, ‘You will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.’ | 5Then I will allow your dynasty to rule over Israel permanently, just as I promised your father David, 'You will not fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.' |
But if indeed you or your sons turn away from following Me and do not keep the commandments and statutes I have set before you, and if you go off to serve and worship other gods, | 6"But if you or your sons ever turn away from me, fail to obey the regulations and rules I instructed you to keep, and decide to serve and worship other gods, |
then I will cut off Israel from the land that I have given them, and I will banish from My presence this temple I have sanctified for My Name. Then Israel will become an object of scorn and ridicule among all peoples. | 7then I will remove Israel from the land I have given them, I will abandon this temple I have consecrated with my presence, and Israel will be mocked and ridiculed among all the nations. |
And when this temple has become a heap of rubble, all who pass by it will be appalled and will hiss and say, ‘Why has the LORD done such a thing to this land and to this temple?’ | 8This temple will become a heap of ruins; everyone who passes by it will be shocked and will hiss out their scorn, saying, 'Why did the LORD do this to this land and this temple?' |
And others will answer, ‘Because they have forsaken the LORD their God who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them—because of this, the LORD has brought all this disaster upon them.’ ” | 9Others will then answer, 'Because they abandoned the LORD their God, who led their ancestors out of Egypt. They embraced other gods whom they worshiped and served. That is why the LORD has brought all this disaster down on them.'" |
Now at the end of the twenty years during which Solomon built these two houses, the house of the LORD and the royal palace, | 10After twenty years, during which Solomon built the LORD's temple and the royal palace, |
King Solomon gave twenty towns in the land of Galilee to Hiram king of Tyre, who had supplied him with cedar and cypress logs and gold for his every desire. | 11King Solomon gave King Hiram of Tyre twenty cities in the region of Galilee, because Hiram had supplied Solomon with cedars, evergreens, and all the gold he wanted. |
So Hiram went out from Tyre to inspect the towns that Solomon had given him, but he was not pleased with them. | 12When Hiram went out from Tyre to inspect the cities Solomon had given him, he was not pleased with them. |
“What are these towns you have given me, my brother?” asked Hiram, and he called them the Land of Cabul, as they are called to this day. | 13Hiram asked, "Why did you give me these cities, my friend?" He called that area the region of Cabul, a name which it has retained to this day. |
And Hiram had sent the king 120 talents of gold. | 14Hiram had sent to the king one hundred twenty talents of gold. |
This is the account of the forced labor that King Solomon imposed to build the house of the LORD, his own palace, the supporting terraces, and the wall of Jerusalem, as well as Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer. | 15Here are the details concerning the work crews King Solomon conscripted to build the LORD's temple, his palace, the terrace, the wall of Jerusalem, and the cities of Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer. |
Pharaoh king of Egypt had attacked and captured Gezer. He had set it on fire, killed the Canaanites who lived in the city, and given it as a dowry to his daughter, Solomon’s wife. | 16(Pharaoh, king of Egypt, had attacked and captured Gezer. He burned it and killed the Canaanites who lived in the city. He gave it as a wedding present to his daughter, who had married Solomon.) |
So Solomon rebuilt Gezer, Lower Beth-horon, | 17Solomon built up Gezer, lower Beth Horon, |
Baalath, and Tamar in the Wilderness of Judah, | 18Baalath, Tadmor in the wilderness, |
as well as all the store cities that Solomon had for his chariots and horses—whatever he desired to build in Jerusalem, Lebanon, and throughout the land of his dominion. | 19all the storage cities that belonged to him, and the cities where chariots and horses were kept. He built whatever he wanted in Jerusalem, Lebanon, and throughout his entire kingdom. |
As for all the people who remained of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites (the people who were not Israelites)— | 20Now several non-Israelite peoples were left in the land after the conquest of Joshua, including the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. |
their descendants who remained in the land, those whom the Israelites were unable to devote to destruction—Solomon conscripted these people to be forced laborers, as they are to this day. | 21Their descendants remained in the land (the Israelites were unable to wipe them out completely). Solomon conscripted them for his work crews, and they continue in that role to this very day. |
But Solomon did not consign any of the Israelites to slavery, because they were his men of war, his servants, his officers, his captains, and the commanders of his chariots and cavalry. | 22Solomon did not assign Israelites to these work crews; the Israelites served as his soldiers, attendants, officers, charioteers, and commanders of his chariot forces. |
They were also the chief officers over Solomon’s projects: 550 supervisors over the people who did the work. | 23These men were also in charge of Solomon's work projects; there were a total of 550 men who supervised the workers. |
As soon as Pharaoh’s daughter had come up from the City of David to the palace that Solomon had built for her, he built the supporting terraces. | 24Solomon built the terrace as soon as Pharaoh's daughter moved up from the city of David to the palace Solomon built for her. |
Three times a year Solomon offered burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar he had built for the LORD, burning incense with them before the LORD. So he completed the temple. | 25Three times a year Solomon offered burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar he had built for the LORD, burning incense along with them before the LORD. He made the temple his official worship place. |
King Solomon also assembled a fleet of ships at Ezion-geber, which is near Eloth in Edom, on the shore of the Red Sea. | 26King Solomon also built ships in Ezion Geber, which is located near Elat in the land of Edom, on the shore of the Red Sea. |
And Hiram sent his servants, men who knew the sea, to serve in the fleet with Solomon’s servants. | 27Hiram sent his fleet and some of his sailors, who were well acquainted with the sea, to serve with Solomon's men. |
They sailed to Ophir and imported gold from there—420 talents—and delivered it to Solomon. | 28They sailed to Ophir, took from there four hundred twenty talents of gold, and then brought them to King Solomon. |
