After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth.1After this, he left Athens and went to Corinth,
There he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to visit them,2where he found a Jewish man named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave Rome. Paul came to them,
and he stayed and worked with them because they were tentmakers by trade, just as he was.3and being of the same occupation, stayed with them and worked, for they were tentmakers by trade.
Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks alike.4He reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath and tried to persuade both Jews and Greeks.
And when Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself fully to the word, testifying to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ.5When Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul was occupied with preaching the message and solemnly testified to the Jews that Jesus is the Messiah.
But when they opposed and insulted him, he shook out his garments and told them, “Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent of it. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.”6But when they resisted and blasphemed, he shook his robe and told them, "Your blood is on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the Gentiles."
So Paul left the synagogue and went next door to the house of Titus Justus, a worshiper of God.7So he left there and went to the house of a man named Titius Justus, a worshiper of God, whose house was next door to the synagogue.
Crispus, the synagogue leader, and his whole household believed in the Lord. And many of the Corinthians who heard the message believed and were baptized.8Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, believed the Lord, along with his whole household. Many of the Corinthians, when they heard, believed and were baptized.
One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking; do not be silent.9Then the Lord said to Paul in a night vision, "Don't be afraid, but keep on speaking and don't be silent.
For I am with you and no one will lay a hand on you, because I have many people in this city.”10For I am with you, and no one will lay a hand on you to hurt you, because I have many people in this city."
So Paul stayed for a year and a half, teaching the word of God among the Corinthians.11And he stayed there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.
While Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews coordinated an attack on Paul and brought him before the judgment seat.12While Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a united attack against Paul and brought him to the judge's bench."
“This man is persuading the people to worship God in ways contrary to the law,” they said.13This man," they said, "persuades people to worship God contrary to the law!"
But just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio told the Jews, “If this matter involved a wrongdoing or vicious crime, O Jews, it would be reasonable for me to hear your complaint.14As Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, "If it were a matter of a crime or of moral evil, it would be reasonable for me to put up with you Jews.
But since it is a dispute about words and names and your own law, settle it yourselves. I refuse to be a judge of such things.”15But if these are questions about words, names, and your own law, see to it yourselves. I don't want to be a judge of such things."
And he drove them away from the judgment seat.16So he drove them from the judge's bench.
At this, the crowd seized Sosthenes the synagogue leader and beat him in front of the judgment seat. But none of this was of concern to Gallio.17Then they all seized Sosthenes, the leader of the synagogue, and beat him in front of the judge's bench. But none of these things concerned Gallio.
Paul remained in Corinth for quite some time before saying goodbye to the brothers. He had his head shaved in Cenchrea to keep a vow he had made, and then he sailed for Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila.18So Paul, having stayed on for many days, said good-bye to the brothers and sailed away to Syria. Priscilla and Aquila were with him. He shaved his head at Cenchreae because he had taken a vow.
When they reached Ephesus, Paul parted ways with Priscilla and Aquila. He himself went into the synagogue there and reasoned with the Jews.19When they reached Ephesus he left them there, but he himself entered the synagogue and engaged in discussion with the Jews.
When they asked him to stay for a while longer, he declined.20And though they asked him to stay for a longer time, he declined,
But as he left, he said, “I will come back to you if God is willing.” And he set sail from Ephesus.21but he said good-bye and stated, "I'll come back to you again, if God wills." Then he set sail from Ephesus.
When Paul had landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church at Jerusalem. Then he went down to Antioch.22On landing at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church and went down to Antioch.
After Paul had spent some time in Antioch, he traveled from place to place throughout the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.23And after spending some time there, he set out, traveling through one place after another in the Galatian territory and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.
Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, well versed in the Scriptures.24A Jew named Apollos, a native Alexandrian, an eloquent man who was powerful in the use of the Scriptures, arrived in Ephesus.
He had been instructed in the way of the Lord and was fervent in spirit. He spoke and taught accurately about Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John.25This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught the things about Jesus accurately, although he knew only John's baptism.
And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him in and explained to him the way of God more accurately.26He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. After Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him home and explained the way of God to him more accurately.
When Apollos resolved to cross over to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. On his arrival, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed.27When he wanted to cross over to Achaia, the brothers wrote to the disciples urging them to welcome him. After he arrived, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace.
For he powerfully refuted the Jews in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.28For he vigorously refuted the Jews in public, demonstrating through the Scriptures that Jesus is the Messiah.
