Parallel Chapters God's Judgment on the Earth 1See, the LORD is going to lay waste the earth and devastate it; he will ruin its face and scatter its inhabitants-- | 1Behold, the LORD will empty the earth and make it desolate, and he will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants. | 1Behold, the LORD lays the earth waste, devastates it, distorts its surface and scatters its inhabitants. | 1Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof. | 1Look, the LORD is stripping the earth bare and making it desolate. He will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants: |
it will be the same for priest as for people, for the master as for his servant, for the mistress as for her servant, for seller as for buyer, for borrower as for lender, for debtor as for creditor. | 2And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the slave, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the creditor, so with the debtor. | 2And the people will be like the priest, the servant like his master, the maid like her mistress, the buyer like the seller, the lender like the borrower, the creditor like the debtor. | 2And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him. | 2people and priest alike, servant and master, female servant and mistress, buyer and seller, lender and borrower, creditor and debtor. |
The earth will be completely laid waste and totally plundered. The LORD has spoken this word. | 3The earth shall be utterly empty and utterly plundered; for the LORD has spoken this word. | 3The earth will be completely laid waste and completely despoiled, for the LORD has spoken this word. | 3The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken this word. | 3The earth will be stripped completely bare and will be totally plundered, for the LORD has spoken this message. |
The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers, the heavens languish with the earth. | 4The earth mourns and withers; the world languishes and withers; the highest people of the earth languish. | 4The earth mourns and withers, the world fades and withers, the exalted of the people of the earth fade away. | 4The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish. | 4The earth mourns and withers; the world wastes away and withers; the exalted people of the earth waste away. |
The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant. | 5The earth lies defiled under its inhabitants; for they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant. | 5The earth is also polluted by its inhabitants, for they transgressed laws, violated statutes, broke the everlasting covenant. | 5The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. | 5The earth is polluted by its inhabitants, for they have transgressed teachings, overstepped decrees, and broken the everlasting covenant. |
Therefore a curse consumes the earth; its people must bear their guilt. Therefore earth's inhabitants are burned up, and very few are left. | 6Therefore a curse devours the earth, and its inhabitants suffer for their guilt; therefore the inhabitants of the earth are scorched, and few men are left. | 6Therefore, a curse devours the earth, and those who live in it are held guilty. Therefore, the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men are left. | 6Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left. | 6Therefore a curse has consumed the earth, and its inhabitants have become guilty; the earth's inhabitants have been burned, and only a few survive. |
The new wine dries up and the vine withers; all the merrymakers groan. | 7The wine mourns, the vine languishes, all the merry-hearted sigh. | 7The new wine mourns, The vine decays, All the merry-hearted sigh. | 7The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merryhearted do sigh. | 7The new wine mourns; the vine withers. All the carousers now groan. |
The joyful timbrels are stilled, the noise of the revelers has stopped, the joyful harp is silent. | 8The mirth of the tambourines is stilled, the noise of the jubilant has ceased, the mirth of the lyre is stilled. | 8The gaiety of tambourines ceases, The noise of revelers stops, The gaiety of the harp ceases. | 8The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth. | 8The joyful tambourines have ceased. The noise of the jubilant has stopped. The joyful lyre has ceased. |
No longer do they drink wine with a song; the beer is bitter to its drinkers. | 9No more do they drink wine with singing; strong drink is bitter to those who drink it. | 9They do not drink wine with song; Strong drink is bitter to those who drink it. | 9They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it. | 9They no longer sing and drink wine; beer is bitter to those who drink it. |
The ruined city lies desolate; the entrance to every house is barred. | 10The wasted city is broken down; every house is shut up so that none can enter. | 10The city of chaos is broken down; Every house is shut up so that none may enter. | 10The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up, that no man may come in. | 10The city of chaos is shattered; every house is closed to entry. |
In the streets they cry out for wine; all joy turns to gloom, all joyful sounds are banished from the earth. | 11There is an outcry in the streets for lack of wine; all joy has grown dark; the gladness of the earth is banished. | 11There is an outcry in the streets concerning the wine; All joy turns to gloom. The gaiety of the earth is banished. | 11There is a crying for wine in the streets; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone. | 11In the streets they cry for wine. All joy grows dark; earth's rejoicing goes into exile. |
The city is left in ruins, its gate is battered to pieces. | 12Desolation is left in the city; the gates are battered into ruins. | 12Desolation is left in the city And the gate is battered to ruins. | 12In the city is left desolation, and the gate is smitten with destruction. | 12Only desolation remains in the city; its gate has collapsed in ruins. |
So will it be on the earth and among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, or as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest. | 13For thus it shall be in the midst of the earth among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, as at the gleaning when the grape harvest is done. | 13For thus it will be in the midst of the earth among the peoples, As the shaking of an olive tree, As the gleanings when the grape harvest is over. | 13When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, there shall be as the shaking of an olive tree, and as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done. | 13For this is how it will be on earth among the nations: like a harvested olive tree, like a gleaning after a grape harvest. |
They raise their voices, they shout for joy; from the west they acclaim the LORD's majesty. | 14They lift up their voices, they sing for joy; over the majesty of the LORD they shout from the west. | 14They raise their voices, they shout for joy; They cry out from the west concerning the majesty of the LORD. | 14They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the LORD, they shall cry aloud from the sea. | 14They raise their voices, they sing out; they proclaim in the west the majesty of the LORD. |
Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD; exalt the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, in the islands of the sea. | 15Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD; in the coastlands of the sea, give glory to the name of the LORD, the God of Israel. | 15Therefore glorify the LORD in the east, The name of the LORD, the God of Israel, In the coastlands of the sea. | 15Wherefore glorify ye the LORD in the fires, even the name of the LORD God of Israel in the isles of the sea. | 15Therefore, in the east honor the LORD! In the islands of the west honor the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel. |
From the ends of the earth we hear singing: "Glory to the Righteous One." But I said, "I waste away, I waste away! Woe to me! The treacherous betray! With treachery the treacherous betray!" | 16From the ends of the earth we hear songs of praise, of glory to the Righteous One. But I say, “I waste away, I waste away. Woe is me! For the traitors have betrayed, with betrayal the traitors have betrayed.” | 16From the ends of the earth we hear songs, "Glory to the Righteous One," But I say, "Woe to me! Woe to me! Alas for me! The treacherous deal treacherously, And the treacherous deal very treacherously." | 16From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs, even glory to the righteous. But I said, My leanness, my leanness, woe unto me! the treacherous dealers have dealt treacherously; yea, the treacherous dealers have dealt very treacherously. | 16From the ends of the earth we hear songs: The Splendor of the Righteous One. But I said, "I waste away! I waste away! Woe is me." The treacherous act treacherously; the treacherous deal very treacherously. |
Terror and pit and snare await you, people of the earth. | 17Terror and the pit and the snare are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth! | 17Terror and pit and snare Confront you, O inhabitant of the earth. | 17Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth. | 17Panic, pit, and trap await you who dwell on the earth. |
Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit; whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare. The floodgates of the heavens are opened, the foundations of the earth shake. | 18He who flees at the sound of the terror shall fall into the pit, and he who climbs out of the pit shall be caught in the snare. For the windows of heaven are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble. | 18Then it will be that he who flees the report of disaster will fall into the pit, And he who climbs out of the pit will be caught in the snare; For the windows above are opened, and the foundations of the earth shake. | 18And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake. | 18Whoever flees at the sound of panic will fall into a pit, and whoever escapes from the pit will be caught in a trap. For the windows are opened from heaven, and the foundations of the earth are shaken. |
The earth is broken up, the earth is split asunder, the earth is violently shaken. | 19The earth is utterly broken, the earth is split apart, the earth is violently shaken. | 19The earth is broken asunder, The earth is split through, The earth is shaken violently. | 19The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly. | 19The earth is completely devastated; the earth is split open; the earth is violently shaken. |
The earth reels like a drunkard, it sways like a hut in the wind; so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion that it falls--never to rise again. | 20The earth staggers like a drunken man; it sways like a hut; its transgression lies heavy upon it, and it falls, and will not rise again. | 20The earth reels to and fro like a drunkard And it totters like a shack, For its transgression is heavy upon it, And it will fall, never to rise again. | 20The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again. | 20The earth staggers like a drunkard and sways like a hut. Earth's rebellion weighs it down, and it falls, never to rise again. |
In that day the LORD will punish the powers in the heavens above and the kings on the earth below. | 21On that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven, in heaven, and the kings of the earth, on the earth. | 21So it will happen in that day, That the LORD will punish the host of heaven on high, And the kings of the earth on earth. | 21And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth. | 21On that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven above and kings of the earth below. |
They will be herded together like prisoners bound in a dungeon; they will be shut up in prison and be punished after many days. | 22They will be gathered together as prisoners in a pit; they will be shut up in a prison, and after many days they will be punished. | 22They will be gathered together Like prisoners in the dungeon, And will be confined in prison; And after many days they will be punished. | 22And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited. | 22They will be gathered together like prisoners in a pit. They will be confined to a dungeon; after many days they will be punished. |
The moon will be dismayed, the sun ashamed; for the LORD Almighty will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before its elders--with great glory. | 23Then the moon will be confounded and the sun ashamed, for the LORD of hosts reigns on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and his glory will be before his elders. | 23Then the moon will be abashed and the sun ashamed, For the LORD of hosts will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, And His glory will be before His elders. | 23Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously. | 23The moon will be put to shame and the sun disgraced, because the LORD of Hosts will reign as king on Mount Zion in Jerusalem, and He will display His glory in the presence of His elders. |
