Parallel Chapters David Becomes King over All Israel
(2 Samuel 5:1-5) 1All Israel came together to David at Hebron and said, "We are your own flesh and blood. | 1Then all Israel gathered together to David at Hebron and said, “Behold, we are your bone and flesh. | 1Then all Israel gathered to David at Hebron and said, "Behold, we are your bone and your flesh. | 1Then all Israel gathered themselves to David unto Hebron, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. | 1All Israel came together to David at Hebron and said, "Here we are, your own flesh and blood. |
2In the past, even while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the LORD your God said to you, 'You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.'" | 2In times past, even when Saul was king, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And the LORD your God said to you, ‘You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over my people Israel.’” | 2"In times past, even when Saul was king, you were the one who led out and brought in Israel; and the LORD your God said to you, 'You shall shepherd My people Israel, and you shall be prince over My people Israel.'" | 2And moreover in time past, even when Saul was king, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD thy God said unto thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel. | 2Even when Saul was king, you led us out to battle and brought us back. The LORD your God also said to you, 'You will shepherd My people Israel and be ruler over My people Israel.'" |
3When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, he made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel, as the LORD had promised through Samuel. | 3So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD. And they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel. | 3So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD through Samuel. | 3Therefore came all the elders of Israel to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel. | 3So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron. David made a covenant with them at Hebron in the LORD's presence, and they anointed David king over Israel, in keeping with the LORD's word through Samuel. |
David Conquers Jerusalem
(2 Samuel 5:6-11) 4David and all the Israelites marched to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus). The Jebusites who lived there | 4And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, that is, Jebus, where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land. | 4Then David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus); and the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were there. | 4And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, which is Jebus; where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land. | 4David and all Israel marched to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus); the Jebusites who inhabited the land were there. |
5said to David, "You will not get in here." Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion--which is the City of David. | 5The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You will not come in here.” Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion, that is, the city of David. | 5The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, "You shall not enter here." Nevertheless David captured the stronghold of Zion (that is, the city of David). | 5And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, Thou shalt not come hither. Nevertheless David took the castle of Zion, which is the city of David. | 5The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, "You will never get in here." Yet David did capture the stronghold of Zion, that is, the city of David. |
6David had said, "Whoever leads the attack on the Jebusites will become commander-in-chief." Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and so he received the command. | 6David said, “Whoever strikes the Jebusites first shall be chief and commander.” And Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief. | 6Now David had said, "Whoever strikes down a Jebusite first shall be chief and commander." Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief. | 6And David said, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. So Joab the son of Zeruiah went first up, and was chief. | 6David said, "Whoever is the first to kill a Jebusite will become chief commander." Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became the chief. |
7David then took up residence in the fortress, and so it was called the City of David. | 7And David lived in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David. | 7Then David dwelt in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David. | 7And David dwelt in the castle; therefore they called it the city of David. | 7Then David took up residence in the stronghold; therefore, it was called the city of David. |
8He built up the city around it, from the terraces to the surrounding wall, while Joab restored the rest of the city. | 8And he built the city all around from the Millo in complete circuit, and Joab repaired the rest of the city. | 8He built the city all around, from the Millo even to the surrounding area; and Joab repaired the rest of the city. | 8And he built the city round about, even from Millo round about: and Joab repaired the rest of the city. | 8He built up the city all the way around, from the supporting terraces to the surrounding parts, and Joab restored the rest of the city. |
9And David became more and more powerful, because the LORD Almighty was with him. | 9And David became greater and greater, for the LORD of hosts was with him. | 9David became greater and greater, for the LORD of hosts was with him. | 9So David waxed greater and greater: for the LORD of hosts was with him. | 9David steadily grew more powerful, and the LORD of Hosts was with him. |
David's Mightiest Warriors
(2 Samuel 23:8-39) 10These were the chiefs of David's mighty warriors--they, together with all Israel, gave his kingship strong support to extend it over the whole land, as the LORD had promised-- | 10Now these are the chiefs of David’s mighty men, who gave him strong support in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel. | 10Now these are the heads of the mighty men whom David had, who gave him strong support in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel. | 10These also are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, and with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel. | 10The following were the chiefs of David's warriors who, together with all Israel, strongly supported him in his reign to make him king according to the LORD's word about Israel. |
11this is the list of David's mighty warriors: Jashobeam, a Hakmonite, was chief of the officers; he raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed in one encounter. | 11This is an account of David’s mighty men: Jashobeam, a Hachmonite, was chief of the three. He wielded his spear against 300 whom he killed at one time. | 11These constitute the list of the mighty men whom David had: Jashobeam, the son of a Hachmonite, the chief of the thirty; he lifted up his spear against three hundred whom he killed at one time. | 11And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had; Jashobeam, an Hachmonite, the chief of the captains: he lifted up his spear against three hundred slain by him at one time. | 11This is the list of David's warriors: Jashobeam son of Hachmoni was chief of the Thirty; he wielded his spear against 300 and killed them at one time. |
12Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite, one of the three mighty warriors. | 12And next to him among the three mighty men was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite. | 12After him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, who was one of the three mighty men. | 12And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, who was one of the three mighties. | 12After him, Eleazar son of Dodo the Ahohite was one of the three warriors. |
13He was with David at Pas Dammim when the Philistines gathered there for battle. At a place where there was a field full of barley, the troops fled from the Philistines. | 13He was with David at Pas-dammim when the Philistines were gathered there for battle. There was a plot of ground full of barley, and the men fled from the Philistines. | 13He was with David at Pasdammim when the Philistines were gathered together there to battle, and there was a plot of ground full of barley; and the people fled before the Philistines. | 13He was with David at Pasdammim, and there the Philistines were gathered together to battle, where was a parcel of ground full of barley; and the people fled from before the Philistines. | 13He was with David at Pas-dammim when the Philistines had gathered there for battle. There was a portion of a field full of barley, where the troops had fled from the Philistines. |
14But they took their stand in the middle of the field. They defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the LORD brought about a great victory. | 14But he took his stand in the midst of the plot and defended it and killed the Philistines. And the LORD saved them by a great victory. | 14They took their stand in the midst of the plot and defended it, and struck down the Philistines; and the LORD saved them by a great victory. | 14And they set themselves in the midst of that parcel, and delivered it, and slew the Philistines; and the LORD saved them by a great deliverance. | 14But Eleazar and David took their stand in the middle of the field and defended it. They killed the Philistines, and the LORD gave them a great victory. |
15Three of the thirty chiefs came down to David to the rock at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. | 15Three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David at the cave of Adullam, when the army of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. | 15Now three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam, while the army of the Philistines was camping in the valley of Rephaim. | 15Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the host of the Philistines encamped in the valley of Rephaim. | 15Three of the 30 chief men went down to David, to the rock at the cave of Adullam, while the Philistine army was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. |
16At that time David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem. | 16David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then at Bethlehem. | 16David was then in the stronghold, while the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem. | 16And David was then in the hold, and the Philistines' garrison was then at Bethlehem. | 16At that time David was in the stronghold, and a Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem. |
17David longed for water and said, "Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!" | 17And David said longingly, “Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem that is by the gate!” | 17David had a craving and said, "Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!" | 17And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, that is at the gate! | 17David was extremely thirsty and said, "If only someone would bring me water to drink from the well at the city gate of Bethlehem!" |
18So the Three broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD. | 18Then the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate and took it and brought it to David. But David would not drink it. He poured it out to the LORD | 18So the three broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water from the well of Bethlehem which was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David; nevertheless David would not drink it, but poured it out to the LORD; | 18And the three brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD, | 18So the Three broke through the Philistine camp and drew water from the well at the gate of Bethlehem. They brought it back to David, but he refused to drink it. Instead, he poured it out to the LORD. |
19"God forbid that I should do this!" he said. "Should I drink the blood of these men who went at the risk of their lives?" Because they risked their lives to bring it back, David would not drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty warriors. | 19and said, “Far be it from me before my God that I should do this. Shall I drink the lifeblood of these men? For at the risk of their lives they brought it.” Therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men. | 19and he said, "Be it far from me before my God that I should do this. Shall I drink the blood of these men who went at the risk of their lives? For at the risk of their lives they brought it." Therefore he would not drink it. These things the three mighty men did. | 19And said, My God forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? for with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest. | 19David said, "I would never do such a thing in the presence of God! How can I drink the blood of these men who risked their lives?" For they brought it at the risk of their lives. So he would not drink it. Such were the exploits of the three warriors. |
David's Thirty Mighty Men 20Abishai the brother of Joab was chief of the Three. He raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed, and so he became as famous as the Three. | 20Now Abishai, the brother of Joab, was chief of the thirty. And he wielded his spear against 300 men and killed them and won a name beside the three. | 20As for Abshai the brother of Joab, he was chief of the thirty, and he swung his spear against three hundred and killed them; and he had a name as well as the thirty. | 20And Abishai the brother of Joab, he was chief of the three: for lifting up his spear against three hundred, he slew them, and had a name among the three. | 20Abishai, Joab's brother, was the leader of the Three. He raised his spear against 300 men and killed them, gaining a reputation among the Three. |
21He was doubly honored above the Three and became their commander, even though he was not included among them. | 21He was the most renowned of the thirty and became their commander, but he did not attain to the three. | 21Of the three in the second rank he was the most honored and became their commander; however, he did not attain to the first three. | 21Of the three, he was more honourable than the two; for he was their captain: howbeit he attained not to the first three. | 21He was more honored than the Three and became their commander even though he did not become one of the Three. |
22Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, performed great exploits. He struck down Moab's two mightiest warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. | 22And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was a valiant man of Kabzeel, a doer of great deeds. He struck down two heroes of Moab. He also went down and struck down a lion in a pit on a day when snow had fallen. | 22Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, mighty in deeds, struck down the two sons of Ariel of Moab. He also went down and killed a lion inside a pit on a snowy day. | 22Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done many acts; he slew two lionlike men of Moab: also he went down and slew a lion in a pit in a snowy day. | 22Benaiah son of Jehoiada was the son of a brave man from Kabzeel, a man of many exploits. Benaiah killed two sons of Ariel of Moab, and he went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. |
23And he struck down an Egyptian who was five cubits tall. Although the Egyptian had a spear like a weaver's rod in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian's hand and killed him with his own spear. | 23And he struck down an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits tall. The Egyptian had in his hand a spear like a weaver’s beam, but Benaiah went down to him with a staff and snatched the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear. | 23He killed an Egyptian, a man of great stature five cubits tall. Now in the Egyptian's hand was a spear like a weaver's beam, but he went down to him with a club and snatched the spear from the Egyptian's hand and killed him with his own spear. | 23And he slew an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits high; and in the Egyptian's hand was a spear like a weaver's beam; and he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and slew him with his own spear. | 23He also killed an Egyptian who was seven and a half feet tall. Even though the Egyptian had a spear in his hand like a weaver's beam, Benaiah went down to him with a club, snatched the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and then killed him with his own spear. |
24Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada; he too was as famous as the three mighty warriors. | 24These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada and won a name beside the three mighty men. | 24These things Benaiah the son of Jehoiada did, and had a name as well as the three mighty men. | 24These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had the name among the three mighties. | 24These were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who had a reputation among the three warriors. |
25He was held in greater honor than any of the Thirty, but he was not included among the Three. And David put him in charge of his bodyguard. | 25He was renowned among the thirty, but he did not attain to the three. And David set him over his bodyguard. | 25Behold, he was honored among the thirty, but he did not attain to the three; and David appointed him over his guard. | 25Behold, he was honourable among the thirty, but attained not to the first three: and David set him over his guard. | 25He was the most honored of the Thirty, but he did not become one of the Three. David put him in charge of his bodyguard. |
